VG, thanks for posting that photo. There's a lot to be learned from it. First, it nicely shows how the fabric was stitched together -- in this case along the cord for the wing. I've read descriptions saying that fabric was sometimes laid on spanwise and so a seam would run parallel to the TE. It also shows the orientation of the cloth. And the use of scrap bits of lozenge fabric for the rib tapes is also interesting.

I've always thought that the GT lozenge fabric looks a bit pale. Can anyone who's seen it "in person" comment?

GTM fabric looks good, ...some of the weave shows when it's off the plane, but this closes up after doping.
Yes, I have some in hand.
[AZM is the one that looks pale, IMHO]

Don I agree with Fokker Ace. The GTM stuff looks like the real deal. My friend has it on his Albi and it looks great. In person it's not pale at all.

It looks a little pale when you get it unfinished, but after it is doped it looks better than anything else I have ever seen

I think the GTM fabric is the way to go as well if you want it to look really good. The colors are very vibrant and well defined. I used the 5 color but I think next time I would like to try the 4 color.
I have had discussions with the curator of the musuem and he assured me that the full scale aircraft were not glossy. After I finished with my DVII's clear dope, I cleared coated it with flat and it looked much better. I suppose you will get much argument about this but scale apearence has a lot to do with impression and the accurate impression of these models is to be flat in appearance and my aircraft was no exception. It looks much better flat than glossy. Next time I will just use flat dope to start with.
Glenn sells the rib tapes that have been cut from his fabric. Again I wish I could have gotten some plain linen tapes from him and dyed them the blue color I wanted. The ribbon I used from the fabric store was difficult to handle and only gave satisfactory results.

Here is a pic of an original piece of fabric from an EIII with the iron cross. This museum has a DR1 tripe, Fokker DVII, Fokker DVIII, and 2, 7/8th scale SE 5a fully flyable aircraft. The uniform the gentelman is wearing in the last photo is Joseph Jacobs. He was very good friends with his grandfather and his uniforms and Blue Max medals are at the museum. Jacobs has the diamond crown over the top of his blue max as he was alive for 50 years after receiving the medal. I was absolutely blown away when I found this place last summer. Right in my back yard basically!
He had told me the reason most aircraft are glossy looking is that is a preservative finish as opposed to the actual finish. Something to think about at least.

I got a shipment of Sig Koverall today and plan to send a small sample to DPI in San Francisco to do a printing test with their dye-sub process. The heat involved in printing might wrinkle the heck out of it but at least the Koverall has no adhesive to deal with. The Koverall is rather transparent which could be a problem if the printing dye doesn't opaque it up some. After printing, applying to the wings (with Balsarite?) and heat shrinking, the Koverall would get a couple of coats of dope to seal it up.
Since I would need 1/6th scale fabric, the GTM fabric is not a choice, only the AZ fabric. If I can use a dye-sub printed fabric I can get very close to the colors I want. I have ordered color chips from WW-I guru Dan-San Abbott and would make my jpgs to his color specs. The sample, if they can make it, will also allow me to see if/how the dope affects the colors.
To start with I have made a test image, based on a Mark Miller website showing Dan-San's colors. In Photoshop I blurred the pattern edges and added some stains and dirt, hopefully to create fabric that looks like it would in the field after a couple of weeks in service (stains and dirt courtesy Starbucks Holiday Blend, scanned separately and used as a selection tool).
The whole exercise is done assuming I will order the AZ Models 1/6th scale SSM D-III, which I am have second thoughts on now because I found that it would come with a plastic cowl, not the aluminum one like the 1/4scale version. >:(

1/6th scale may be a very good size.

I have the answer and it will solve all of this. I print on the solartex linen.I am the one making it for Balsa Usa. Problem we are running into is simple to fix in small runs will not be to much of an issue. What I have ready is the 5 color top and bottom on solartex.
And will be offering it to the public . There will be slight variation due to the process that solartex is made I cannot forsee But the samples that you have seen at Toledo were mine and the troubles we were having we have soughted out. I can also make 1/6th scale in the 5 color. and 1/3rd scale.
You can contact me Direct with [email protected]
If you have any questions Thanks

I've had a soft spot for the D7 for a long time because of the lozenge scheme and like others put it off because of the effort. Awhile back I ran across the arizona models site and found they will print the lozenge pattern any scale you want. http://www.arizonamodels.com/product...products_id/91 But its pretty expensive. In the next web site a guy talks about using it, 4 paragraph down.

I had thought there was another place that did 1/5, 1/4, 1/3. But cant find it naturally.

Well guys I have put the 1/4 scale lozenge up on rcu for the 2 meter roll is 65.00 so you can get top and bottom for 130.00
which is more then enough to finish your 1/4 scale brids. Now here is the deal I am making this stuf for Balsa Usa What I have in stock is limited. But I can always make more. I am also making the 4 color pattern and 1/6th and 3rd so I leave it up to you RCU can you build a germany plane in lozenge now that you have a heat shrinkable fabric that looks like the real deal..
And I know if you are going for Compitition I know you dont want this stuff you want Glen T stuff and that ok I got the thumbs up from him in Toledo. We are on a differant level he does have the real deal which is awsome. Mine is a little easier to apply and will give you oustanding results. so take a look and tell me , What you think??
