Yep, I stalled. Hit two road blocks.
The first came when I tried to start mounting my new built-up wings to the fuse. Realized that I would have to add alot of ply supports to the nose area to carry the aluminum wing tube. Alot of cutting into the foam, redesigning, adding, etc. Seemed like a lot of extra work and in the end there wasn't going to be alot of foam left. Plus I didn't want to finish the raw foam with just monokote. I did that once before on a foam plane and it dinged way too easily. Looked like crap after only a month of flying. But I also didn't want to glass the whole thing with epoxy, prime, sand, paint, etc. So I again hit the CAD system. Designed a new built-up fuse and tail utilizing the Byron cowl, canopy, and landing gear. So basically this really isn't a Byron Originals plane anymore. The other road block was a complete change-over of management at work. Had me working alot of extra hours, didn't leave alot of time (or energy) for airplanes. But I got the new plans all printed, and I'm back at it again. I'm determined to be ready to fly by June 1st! |

It's been a week or so, but I've been busy. I got the fuse frames finished a couple days ago. Today I was able to get the basic fuse structure framed up. Landing gear mounts in and the gear mounted. It sat on its gear for the first time and I was able to do the first test fit of the wing, tail, and cowl.

More progress!
Got the rear turtledeck and the canopy/hatch framed up and sheeted. After glueing up the sheeting on the rear deck, I spread a layer of lightweight spackle over it. Once dry it was sanded to a nice smooth finish. While I was waiting for the spackle to dry, I mounted the hatch. It's held on by four 4-40 bolts. |

Mounting the G26.
After some careful measurements, I figured out that I need to space the motor out 4-1/8" from the firewall. I decided to build a spacer box that would utilize the 1/4" aluminum mount included with the engine. This box would also give me a convenient place to mount the throtle and choke servos. The aluminum plate would bolt to the engine, then bolts would go through the plate from the front and into a set of blind nuts in the firewall. All was fine and dandy until a trip to the hardware store. 4-1/8" spacer plus 3/8" firewall means that I would need bolts that were 4-1/2" long. Couldn't find any unless I went with 5/16" bolts which I didn't have room for. So my solution was to utilize 10-24 threaded rod. These rods thread into the same blind nuts imbedded into the firewall and are secured/locked with lock nuts on each end. The finished product seems plenty strong enough to me. |

Well, I've been building like crazy but not documenting it so well. So here's a quick recap of the last few days.
Got the sleaves for the wing tubes mounted in the wings. There were some small gaps around the sleaves so I glued them in place with Gorilla glue. The nice thing about Gorilla glue is that it expands to fill all the small gaps. The bad thing about Gorilla glue is that it expands and leaves you with alot of clean-up. Wing bolt blocks were glued into place and the wings mounted for the first time. The last of the wing sheeting was glued into place. The cowl was fitted and puttied, however it still needs alot of work. The cockpit floor was painted. The bottom of the hatch and the inside of the fuse was sprayed. All control surfaces were hinged using Robart hinge points. The tail fairing was built and sanded. And after a late night last night the airframe is finally ready for Monokote! |
RE: Byron Cap 21
WOW very nice work!

RE: Byron Cap 21
So where can one get a set of your plans and templates? My dad has a printer and CAD system at work, so shipping plans is not an issue. Doesn't even matter if they are complete drawings, we can figure it out!
My dad has had two of the Byron's Caps and loved them. We talked and talked about doing this very thing, but never got aroud to it. Even talking about using the fuse as a plug for a glass fuse version. Finally he threw his last one out when he moved. It was in BAD shape. Fuel tank spilt, melted the bottom from firewall to tailpost. Landing gear yanked out several times, wheel pants glassed and re-glassed, etc etc |
RE: Byron Cap 21
My Byron Cap got a lot of attention this past week-end. The fact that I went brushless, upset the guy I bought the kit from, lol. He was afraid of the gas vs foam deal. I'd love to have a set of your plans too, FT, just in case...

RE: Byron Cap 21
Plan sets would be available from me either electronically or printed. PM me if you'd like more details. Please keep in mind that I designed these plans to utilize the fiberglass and plastic parts, and aileron stock that were included in the Byron kit. I have no intention of creating molds or offering these parts for sale.
I was really hoping to have this plane done for the first Fly-In of the year this weekend. Unfortunately it has been raining nonstop here for the last week. That has made it much too humid to do any paint work so the cowl is far from ready. It will miss this event but I'd still like to get it done within the next week. |

Long live the Cap 21!!!:D
This is a video of flight #3, not the best landing, but the more I fly it the nicer it is in the air! http://www.youtube.com/user/RevyMaxx#p/u/0/UUPuUBWiaXQ |

RE: Byron Cap 21
You probably have a Cap 20L which is the predecessor to the 21, obviously. It had the rounded wings but the 21 style fuse.
