Default Has anyone done any nozzle research?

Has anyone done any hands-on research with Propellor nozzles? (Kort, Rice, Marin) It looks like the correct nozzle could increase my bollard pull by 20% I'm building a test bed to find out if these things scale down. anybody esle tried it yet?

Yes, Kort nozzles do increase the prop efficiency considerably, go and try it.

Jan.

With the answer below this in mind, make sure you make the prop fit into the nozzle snug, avoiding spill. Just putting a Kort around an existing prop will help a bit, but will be rather "underwhelming", as Ron states.

Dave,
There has been research done on the 'full size' nozzles, not sure about the 'model' sized ones. Scaling a full sized nozzle to a 'model' sized nozzle doesn't always result in the 'same' performance. That's due to not being able to reduce the 'size' of a water molecule from 'full sized' to 'model size' (not the best analogy in the world, but I think it get's the idea across).

There is an increase in performance (in most cases), but don't expect 'miracles'! I can't remember who offered the advice ("Towboat Joe", or "River Bill"), but I'll bet he would be happy to share what he did with me about 'nozzles'. I added a 'Kort' to a tug I have and was completely 'under-whelmed' with the results! Not that it can't be done, just that I did something 'not tight' (LOL)! (Since been added to the list of "Things to do when I rememebr it".)

Good luck, and I'm certainly interested in what happens...

Well I'm waiting for the strain cell... (Seems like I'm aways waiting for parts of some kind) when complete my "test cluge" will give me:
Pull (Stalled, like a tub pulling a stopped barge)
Volts (adjustable)
Amps
RPM
The quantities of course are only to be compared, NOT absolute!
