Hello Rich,
My dauntless is far from finished. I have not worked on her since last spring. Your work keeps me inspired.

Hi Chuck,

So where do you stand with her? What still needs to be done to get her on the water?

I managed to find a minute and added two more pieces of trim to Dauntless. Now the trim continues to the gate on both sides...

This is my finished modified Dauntless from Dumas, broke the rules and looks great,Mack Marinemotors 3600 ,Pro-Boat esc's installed running on 8.4 volt batteries 5000MAH and twin brass props, reduced a lot of weight in non-critical areas with balsa and modified design from plans and paint job. Skipped the fiberglassing instead just the resin epoxy in 3 successive layers and works fine plus simpler and cleaner. Did the same to a running Dumas PT 109 built last year and solid as a rock and fast as a rocket. Tough kit and a BIG boat and needs a Dremel tool and tons of clamps because Cyano no good and 5 min epoxyis the only adhesive you want to use.

Hi captains,
A couple of days ago I threw 2 more pieces of trim in the soaker… a strip of 1/8” square and ¼” X 1/8” trim.
Last night I cut and put the trim in place so that it takes shape.
Use the last set of pics for reference: Picture 3 on top shows the aft cockpit side walls. I cut 1/8” off the finished curved bottom strip and slid the 1/8” strip underneath, taped it and bent it downward aft where it was taped to hold the shape. I did this for port and starboard side.
Next is the 1/8” X ¼” trim which goes across the top of owner’s cabin aft. This piece goes from the hatch unit port & stbd and curves downward at the edge of the cabin top. This trim lines the end of the cabin. It can also be seen in Jon’s video in clip 8:29 or his posted pictures has a good view on p. 58 2nd from the top.
I soaked these 2 pieces and bent them downward. I taped and clamped them in place to hold the downward shape. When I have a chance I am going to trim and sand the pieces to be under 1/8” high additionally where it starts at the hatch will be wider than the outer and they will be stained and finally fixed in place. This piece of trim is important because the half round trim that will be on the cabin side will go from the gate and meet at the end of this trim on both sides. Once this trim is done I can prepare the next piece of trim..

I agree dude, I glassed the hull but layered the cabins in epoxy. The cabins are as strong as can be.. The only thing is that it took a lot of time to smooth out and remove the flaws.

I glassed my hull, but just epoxied the cabins with a brush. My results were not so good. Even after painting several times, you can see the grain patterns in the wood pieces. You have to look close, but it's always bothered me that I didn't glass the cabins to make them smooth like the hull.

Is that because I only put on one layer?

I think it is as in the hydroplaning community, most never touch glass and we strive for that "perfectly finished" boat. We apply a layer of epoxy(I like West Systems myself) let it start curing and scrape off the excess. We normally get a glass like paint job after that.

Hi Dauntlessfan,

You don't need to to glass the cabins to make it smooth like the hull. It just takes a ton of sanding and smoothing to get a clean finish. When sanding I've learned to start at 220grit to remove the shine and sand thesurfaceeven then move to lighter sandpaper such as 320, 400 and finally 600 grit to get it perfectly smooth. I also found that it is helpful to wrap the sandpaper around a piece of scrap wood or small sanding block when sanding. This is because when I sand without it I tend to go too deep which results in more filling.

This is my 2 pennies worth...

Hi captains,

Another update,

Last night I focused on the bridge deck canopy. In the above pictures the canopy has the mahogany support (aft) shown but on the full sized Dauntless it wascovered in white fabric so I went ahead andcut and glued the fabricacross the support. It is now complete. I left the top part a bit long so that I could tuck it under the top canopyand glue it in a way that itappearsto have beensewn. It looks very natural.

As soon as I get a moment I will post a picture of it.

Hi Hydro,

I agree, West Systems Epoxy is some good stuff. That is what I used to coat the cabinsand some hull work early on. I wish that there was some sort of applicator for it. I got into trouble with it a few times because it was hard to guess if I had the right mixture or not. This led to some re-do's because it sometimes cured like rubber. But when I had the mixture right it was money!

Do you have any RC Hydro boats? I think that there used to be a group in Washington State that used to race scale RC hydros with Astroflight motors in them. Some of those boats looked awesome!

Hi captains,

Here is a flashback from this time last year....She has come a long way since then...

These pictures were whenI received some info on the bridge. I couldn't leave well enough alone so I hacked up the shelter toapply the corrections. The bridge walls were also extended inward at that time too.

I'm sure this build will continue on until next year so I can't wait so seehow she willlook then.. This build is so dragged out but it's fun..

stay tuned..LOL

Rich, the group group you are refering to is E-R/C Unlimiteds and I agree, they have some fantastic looking boats. I'm working on several boats at the moment. I have under construction the following:
2 Dumas Pay'N Pak sport 20s, highly modified and remanufactured with better materials
1 Scale 1999 Miss Madison from plans
1 Steve Muck glass scale 1974 U-76 (picture below)
1 sport 40 sized Pay'N Pak from scaled down Newton plans (picture below)
1 sport 40 Blazer Marine Whip Lash

I've got the following in the works as well
1 scale 1985 Executone I'm waiting on plans for
1 scale 2000-2003 Oh Boy! Oberto
1 gas scale 2007-2011 Oh boy! Oberto
1 Dumas Circus Circus kit
1 Dumas Eagle sport 40 hydroplane kit

I've only got a "few" toys to play with. The last one that I included was the first boat I ever built, a Dumas sport 20 Pay'N Pak, a build that's had me building boats for around 30 years

Yes, I've actually met him a while back. He's one of the people behind E-R/C Unlimiteds. If I remember right, he was also involved with the comversion of the 1988-90 Miss Madison from Allison to turbine power. He is now one of the primary suppliers of hulls in E-R/CU.

Wow Hydro..You have your hands full with all those boats!!!! Yes! the E-RC Unlimited Hydros....thanks.. A while back I saw a vintage Ferrari Hydro that was converted to RC. I might want to follow suit and do the same thing. I have a small stock pile of Astroflight 25's so it would be cool to put them to use.

Thanks flyboy...the Dauntless project is years in the making...when I started this there was no info on the full sizedvessel anywhere.Info slowly trickled inafter lots of research and even more luck..(thanks to this forum). It took 3 years to originally build it and now 4 years to rebuild it and it's still not done yet....Your boat will take time to do but when it's done it will be worth it. Hopefully it shouldn't take as long as mine did..

Good luck on finding a new house...This must be an exciting time..make sure it has a place for you to set up a good workshop!

Hi captains,

Last night I was able to put more work into Dauntless.....This is great considering I didn't think I would have any time right about now.... I began installing windows.... The 3 front bridge shelter windows are in.I have to soak and bend some thin wood trim for the bridgeshelter corner windows then I will make up thecurved glass for installation. (I can't wait tofinish and install those two pieces!)

The port and stbd main cabin winshield glass is installed.I have to trim the 2 center windows a little more to get them to fit correctly and I have to make up a pair of windows for the port side owners cabin.

On the stbd owners cabin the window closest to the gate is missing a piece of the frame, I made up the replacement piece and painted it last night. The glass is in so I will use a little bit of glue and secure the part in place. Afterwards I will touch up the seam in flat white paint to get it to look like the rest of the frames.

I am using canopy glue to secure the windows in place. No pictures yet but I will post them when they are available.

Here’s an interesting Dauntless tid-bit. In 1959 Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands (now Queen) visited New York to commemorate Henry Hudson’s 350 year anniversary. She sailed to NYC via Ocean Liner then sailed to FDR's house via Dauntless for an overnight stay. The next day she boarded Dauntless with Laurance and sailed to Albany for a huge parade where they met up with his brother, Governor Nelson Rockefeller.
Below is a News Reel from that time.. The funny thing is that they said that she travelled aboard a “Dutch Destroyer” but in fact it was Dauntless that sported the Dutch Royal Flag on her radar mast for the occasion. Dauntless had a few Navy men aboard and was escorted by the US Navy ships to Albany going about 10 knots. There is a clip that shows the stern flag of the vessel that may have been taken from the “Dutch destroyer”, if so it was Dauntless’s aft flag mast.

Hi captains,

Below is an adjenda that I made up for Dauntless back in 2008. The reason for this adjenda was to list everything I wanted done to Dauntless so that I can keep track of all aspects of the build. This list was a valuable tool from making the thought into a reality making this a great way to plan a course of action for any build. As you will see I still have a bunch of things to complete but a lot was done. I tend to skip around as needed but the items eventually get done. Every item has to be marked (done) in order for it to be considered complete.

This will be good for you all that follow along see what else needs to be completed.

Dauntless. Order of Importance for 2008
Interior open items.
1) Plank both main cabin and forward cabin ceilings. Forward ceiling done...Main cabin ceiling needs planks(2011)
2) Make up fwd interior doors/ frame for forward cabin. Entrance door and frame. Half bath door & frame. Crew Cabin door and frame. Full Bath door and frame.) Make adjustments to fwd cabin walls to accommodate ceiling and stand alone. Trim, add planks as necessary. In process
