Battery location?

In the first picture the batteries are side by side, that is how I tested her yesterday. I've heard of a couple of people staging the batteries end to end does this work for most? I've thought about seeing if one of the batteries will fit under the servos it the bow. My only worry is that it would make her low in the bow. Any ideas?

Also I'm glad I did sea trails yesterday, as it's snowing today.

Very very nice setup!!!

Your current setup looks very good as far as batteries goes. She will run a little bow high but its not so bad. If you put the batteries in the bow then she will look horrible sitting on the water and likely plow through water at high speeds creating a wet ride.. The ideal spot is where you have the first battery just behind the motors aft. Take the second battery and play with the location. Perhaps stack it over the first battery to see how it rides or take battery 2 and sit it up and sideways so that the weight is transferred just behind battery 1. For battery two those two spots are good for the center of gravity (COG) on that boat.

007-
Gotta know. Are the pop bottle rocket launchers still operational? Do you use the Estes igniters? Where are the launch tubes? Very cool!!!

Hi captains,

Today I was home sick so I decided it was time to take action on Dauntless's bow. I have been holding off on this for a while but the ol' gal has been nudging me to finish it up. So I used my material of choice on this boat and got started.

The holes were filled and the underside of the platform was coated with epoxy gel. Also there were 3 holes drilled through the platform that also got a little coating on top so that is works much like liquid rivets and the seam on the outer end got a coating too. Next up I will lightly sand it even and get it ready for paint.

Also I spoke to Rich at MACK who is sending me the lens/light housing for the bow light.

Here are some pictures.

Koka,
To answer your question, the bottle rocket lauch tube is in the stern on the port side. When Rthalls built the Dauntless, he put three little copper clips around a brass tube. There are some thin copper wire strandes in a container near the tube in the stern of the boat. Clip the wire, then wrap the other end around the fuse. I have yet to try it, due to the fact is I don't have any bottle rockets at this time. My wife and kids think it's cool so I'm going to leave it in the setup. A friend of mine said "hey can you use the wiring for the bottle rockets to power a paint gun?" Everyone has ideas for my boat, oh well.

Right now I've got a guy that I work with that is making me some new battery boxes out of some scrap carbon fiber that we have laying around at work. So I can take some weight out of the back and move the batteries around. Also with the snow that Maryland seems to be getting right now, I might take this time to move the waterline to a more correct place, and paint the hull blue. The white isn't bad, I just like the Blue better.

Also has anyone tried to run their antenna through the deck into a whip style radio antenna?

Wow! No posts here in 25 days. This is my first place to go upon booting the computer. I haven't done anything worth posting on windshield, but hard to believe no one is active. Bill-DF-Deepster-Rich-Geo-Wagonman, et al ?? Hope all is well with everyone. I do have one nagging question... when does a boat become a ship? Is the designation given by length, weight or ???
Cheers.
Steve

Just hopped on to see what,s new. They tell me the navy answer is as follows. You can put a boat on a ship. That was about 50 years ago bring me up to date. Winter project is a stick built tug. Up to planking the sides. Will post pictures as soon as I clean it up a little.

hi i think its bolth weight and leanth.i had a real side wheeler that was 94 ton 165 ft. and was able to be her captain but if she would have been 97 ton i would have to had masters papers.

As we used to say when I was in the Navy, A boat is any vessel that can be hoisted onto a ship, not counting submarines which are referred to as boats regardless

Hey Steve - RC Groups has a few active Dauntless threads right now, so take a look there as well.

I've been working on my boat a bit in the last month. I've added a captain, made a canvas cover for the dinghy, and installed a flag at the bow flying the Tarrytown Boat Club burgee. Also I began painting the inside of my hull grey.

Very nice DF!!

geo,

Your Dauntless is looking nice. It's a labor of love and you look to be in the home stretch.

Hello, to all. The Holidays were busy, so not much got done on the refit of my Dauntless. I did manage to repaint the hull, I didn't use a laser level just my eyeballs. It looks pretty good, all in all. I've started moving stuff around inside the hull to help balance her out. Everything is free floating, so I've got to start gluing things down before I can take her back out again. Which I'm dying to do. Also does anyone know where I might find gold letters that would work for the stern?

What motors are you using??

dauntlessfan 01-17-2014 05:35 PM

Lookin' good Machinist. I believe Rich has contact info for the gold lettering decals.

geo8498 01-17-2014 06:06 PM

I'm pretty sure you can find gold rub on lettering at MIchael's, A.C. Moore, or Hobby Lobby, in their scrap-booking section.

machinist007 01-18-2014 05:44 PM

Geo,

Since I bought the boat I believe that it has 700's in it.

I do have a question for all. When I push the throttle all the way the props stutter on and off, sometimes it just dies. Does anyone have any ideas? The transmitter and receiver that came with the boat are a Walkera brand, should I change it? All the servos are futuba so no worries there.

machinist007 01-22-2014 06:38 AM

Ok, I spent 3 hours going over all the wiring Sunday after not being able to take her for a drive on the community inlet. I found that the wires to the second battery where lose on both terminals. So I think I found my problem, battery not charging equals no boat time with in turn makes me mad. Good thing it is now fixed, So now I just need to wait for the ice to melt on the inlet next to the river. Seeing it isn't going to get above freezing for the next week, it's going to be a while before I can get her back into the water. sigh.

Some priming on the boat today.

machinist007 01-23-2014 05:00 AM

Looking good Geo, soon you're going to be ready to have some fun on the water with her.

Thanks DF, and Geo for the info on the Gold Lettering. I'll start looking so I can put the name on the stern, the more I work on her the more it looks odd without a name.

rblubaugh 01-23-2014 07:15 AM

The primer makes her look that much better.

geo8498 01-23-2014 08:38 AM

I bought some really bad white spray paint from Pep Boys. It's not working out for me at all. I'm going to need to do some sanding and redo the white with some good paint.
Soon I'll need to start installing running hardware. I haven't bought that yet.

rblubaugh 01-23-2014 10:35 AM

geo,

Might I suggest Mack Products "Dauntless 1211", if you haven't purchased running hardware yet, on this page: http://www.mackproductsrc.com/power_packages.htm Great products, great people (talk to Rich) if you have questions.
