I've really been thinking of building an rc sub and was wondering waht the cost to size ratio is. I figure building a large sub(3-5 foot) compared to a small sub (1-2 foot) might be cheaper, as I'm using componenets that don't have to be built down to the smallest level. So heres the thing, I live by very few hobbiests, the closest hobby shop is over 2 hours away, and I need help....
A: I know not the cost of such devices and hence I need to find an online distrubuter with decent pricing.
B: After seeing the post with the typhoon sub, I just thought that would be super cool, was wondering if anyone knew where to find a LARGE model for it for <$50.
C: If not, I plan to make it out of large peices of pvc pipe, was wondering if their were any other ways to go about it to (I don't have many tools, so I can't really fabricate alot)
D: I lost my train of thought... I'll post more back later...

Hi,
There's plenty of vendors out there who sell sub hulls, I'm not an expert on each but I can tell you that a starter sub shouldn't be too small nor too big, it should be easy to assemble, not too complicated to operate. A lot of subs can fit under this catergory, Try the SubCommittee Vendors Link page, there's plenty of links there.
Large model of the Typhoon for under 50 bux? It's PRETTY RARE to find something of that price on the market, look at it this way, a small kit of the Typhoon at 1/350th scale costs about from $30-$40, the size is about around 19 inches. If you want to aim for something bigger, the price bar is pretty high, from the kits I've seen, I didn't find any that were under $100[

I don't really have PVC experience, I'm sure that a lot of guys out there will answer this question better.

From: Grass Valley, CA,
Capn' pretty right on there. Revell puts out a Typhoon kit that is 1/400 scale. comes out to be "17 by 2 1/2" and runs about $15-$30 online. So I imagine something 1/200 or bigger will run over $50. But that Revell kit I would think would be a good start. plenty of room inside for standard dynamic diving sub. Should help keep costs low as well. In fact, that is exactly what i am doing myself. and there will be room for a smaller WTC and ballast system down the road If I feel the need to go in that direction. But that size should fit 300-380 size motor and micro servos no problem. even non micro rx and ESC.

Don't forget the Dragon kit!
My friend got one of those subs and is darn pretty happy about his purchase, too bad he accidentally sealed the hull shut and couldn't open it for Rcing....[&:] There is definitely space inside the Typhoon for some electronics, I also have the Trumpeter Kilo kit and I'm also making it RC. For some reason, I've always felt that the Typhoon had more space than the Kilo inside..... both subs are the same length by the way. Any of you built the Engel Typhoon kit? Looks pretty awesome! Rc Sumo, how's that USS Lionfish coming?

From: Grass Valley, CA,
haha......well I got a little intimadated by the dimensions and decided to go for the Typhoon. I'll be starting that in a couple of weeks. Since I about that time I posted I took some time off from my RC stuff for the fall. But it's winter in the California mountains and time to be inside. Time to get my projects ready for Spring/Summer.
That Lionfish looked skinny and I didn't see anywhere where anyone had made it RC. I am trying to procure the "Hunt for Red October" Typhoon kit. I think I have bead on one and hope to make that version RC. I think it will make a great first time conversion. Plenty of room and about the 2 challenges I see are:
1)I want to link the front dive planes with the rear to make diving/surfacing more responsive since it is a dynamic diver.
2) creating some gearing or belt to drive both screws. Unsure if the screws that come with the kit will be suitable to use for propelling this sub, or will i have to get diffrent ones.
Nice to hear from ya again Cap!

About the same weather here I would say, I'll have to wait until March to put my subs back to sea.[:@][:@]
On the other hand, you have time to work on your subs during the season, I currently have a scratchbuilt U-boat on the workbench. Cryosis, enjoy this hobby! It's certainly one of the best in the world!
