In a pool its not hard to see them. In a pond you could just go periscope depth and use that to track it, or if its clear enough you can go a little deeper. You could also trail a little float so that you can't get lost. But losing sight is always a danger if all you want to do is go deeper. Then you can lose signal or get stuck anyway.

Definitely, besides roedj's own favourite ' disappearing trick ' which his submarine run away on its own like my teenager daughters
, you can modify its diving planes to be ailerons to do what planes can do. The physics of water is similar to air although water has much higher viscosity and resistance.
