Default KT idler upgrade??????

After looking at the Shumo I see the new block and the new drums,I am wondering if alum on alum would gauld and bind with the set screw in the block and the drum in the block?? also is there a spring to be added or is it a solid adjustment??

Now with the looks of Daryls I dont see a spring eather Is this also a solid mount ?? and What holds the disks in place??

Thanks
Ron

P.S. this is a tamiya KT

I have Daryl's Idler and it is top notch. there is a rod that goes between to the two "disks" and holds everything in place. There are two adjusting springs on each side you trim to your preference.

If memory serves, It came with springs, X4. Screws. The left and Right disks. The rod. Everything included to install with no sweat. Even a CD with PDF files showing installation. I think it even had a small size allen wrench. About all you would need is a pair of cutters to trim the springs to your desired tension. That is easy enough to do. Some have set theirs with greater tension than what I have. I installed mine in 2004 I believe and haven't had a problem since except for the weakness of the tracks. Many have gone to the metal tracks but I haven't done that ... yet. I still may.

My KT was my first tank and I've loved running it.

Others have installed the same system in their KT's and JT's and haven't heard of any problems.

Thank you BBC KT that helps out alot . I plan on getting KK metal tracks, This may be the answer.
This is also my first build so I would like to do it right . I have put on 3:1 geardowns on it and 480 motors ,still waiting for the ball bearings to arive so I can put the wheels together. I am at the painting stage, took me all day to draw out the camo pattern on the tank.

Ok. Like when you read this post, look to the upper right hand corner and click reply. That will bring you to a message screen. Type out your message. Then look just below and you will see "Click here to upload images and files!"

Now for some reason picture posting has gotten a bit screwy lately but someone figured out to make your first post with a pic then post it, then go back and edit it to add additional pics.

Like I just edited my first posting to you. Hope this helps.

I hope your surgery was successful and you are feeling well.

ETO does not have sales, they just quietly work on day in day out...Never a day off...just work work work..even Christmas day. Always there. Never stop...

Saw that you have a lathe and mill. Here's a DYI option for KT idler tensioner. Can start with cheap brass fittings. Need 1/4" thick delrin or nylon squares to replace the stock metal mounting squares. Works fine on my Tamiya KT.
To increase tension, turn nut to move spring toward top of lever bolt. Spring is attached to hull bottom just ahead of back edge of speaker box.

Thanks danlrc
That does not look to complicated, but how did you connect the idler arm to the brass sleeve so it will not break loose ? Pinned? setscrew? I figure epoxy would let loose after awhile,Are there any specific dimensions for this ??

After removing the wings from the idler arm, I left the surface rough (some "stubble" left from removing the wings). I the drilled out a brass pipe nipple (threaded ends were cut off) so the idler arm shaft would roughly slip into the nipple. I slathered it with JBWeld and stuck it in, centering as well as I could visually. Since its only a slow and partial rotation part, exact alignment isn't critical like it would be for a high speed axle. The JBWeld will hold forever. You can drill a few small holes through the wall of the nipple in the gluing area to provide even more mechanical strength.

The outer sleeve needs to have a thick enough wall to be drilled and tapped for the tensioning lever screw. I think I used a short piece of sched 80 brass pipe I had around. I'm sure that various brass nipples can be found for just a couple of dollars to make the pieces necessary.

Note the two copper washers on the inboard side to reduce rotary friction. May not be necessary.

The delrin 1/4"thick squares were made exactly the shape and screw hole pattern of the stock metal square pieces. The cenetr hole size will depend on your brass fitting sizes. Need also to slightly enlarge the hull hole.

Nylon should be just fine. But delrin machines like butter.
PM me your mailing address and I'll send you some delrin if you want to make the tensioner. (Sorry - only a bit left - can't supply anybody else...)
