transmission trouble
Guys can I use a HL tranny in my tiger I ( 56010 ) kit ?
Will it mount or do I have to redrill the mounts ?
mine has 3 plastic spur gears in it and the one with 48 T on it is stripped
Can I just replace the entire tranny from HL ??

RE: transmission trouble
You can get an overhaul kit for most any later Tammy TU's from AAF museum in VA. The HL units will not fit without significant mods, and will probably not last long pulling the Tiger around.

Way stronger. Been in this hobby for 17 years now, and I can just about guaranty you the Tam TU will last way longer than anything else. Plus you can get parts for them.

RE: transmission trouble
Hmm...
plastic stronger than metal ( HL unit ) .
I dont believe that .
I have been in the hobby for 25 yrs and never seen that
I am talking the HL Heavy duty TU vs Tamiya stock unit ? is that possible .?

Hmmm. Karen, that's not good. Just when I need some Pershing overhaul kits. Rats.
Easy 11..if you want to put HL TU's in your Tamiya, then go for it. If you want real, rompin' stompin' power and endless durability, then you can always scare up a set of the original Tamiya Type one's, get HPC steel gears for them, I think I have another reinforcement left you can buy, and get the Schumo gear down and get the eto black long cans.
If you want good durability at a good price, go with the Tamiya Type 3 TU's, (sounds like you have the Type 2's). Mine have lasted 7 years now, including many visits to girltankette's indoor battlefield at Danville VA, and never stripped a gear. And you should see the rock garden I call home now. Makes Danville look like a cake walk.
In the photo with 3 TU's, left is Type 1, middle is Type 2, right is Type 3. Type 3 is currently available, fits Tiger 1 and King Tiger in one version, Panther/Jagdpanther in another, Sherman in a third, and P4 in a 4th version. All are identical except for the final drive shaft length, and the floor mount stanchions. If you go that route, use your existing stanchions.

RE: transmission trouble
Yeah the HL tranny's are not even on the same page as Tamiya gear boxes. Dont let the Metal gear part fool you. The gears are made of pot luck metal.
If you dont have any luck with the type 2's your looking for at least go with an Asiatam gear box. You will still need to do some modifications too fit them. Nothing fits in a Tamiya accept Impact or Tamiya.

RE: transmission trouble
I saw an all metal HL tranny ( upgraded model ) looked very good guys .
nice metal and unlike the stock metal the so called all steel is very good.
checked the hardness of the gears and was great compared to the plastic on the tamiya TU .
very good upgrade

I will try to find a link and post it later .
we got lots of snow here so got to do some blowing outside to make way for the tank run in the afternoon.

RE: transmission trouble
Your probably talking about the steel geared gear boxes that we used too get from RCCommand. Well they are not in business as far as we can tell anymore
I have a set of those in my Tiger HL/Tamiya conversion. These are very good boxes but still, for a Tamiya you really want Tamiya or Impact gear boxes. The Tamiya's with the Shcumo drop downs work really well.

RE: transmission trouble
He would be better off with Tamiyas and geardowns, or straight Tamiya TU's. Impact TU's have no bushings in the gears, and the gears themselves are not particularly 'hard'. And the nickel plating on the gear shafts comes off rather rapidly, and becomes an abrasive which further scores the gear shafts in addition to the scoring from the lack of bushings in the gears.
I have replaced all the gears in the 3 Impact TU's I have with Tamiya gears, simply to save the built in gear down, and bored out the gear down gear itself for bearings to save them. Simple job requiring some shims on each shaft only for the gear swap itself.

RE: transmission trouble
I agree sevo, I think the Tamiya's with drop down's are the best option. Ihave used and still do in some situations use Impact parts i have no real desire to advertise for thier products. Far to many issues with them for me.

RE: transmission trouble
Type 1's are long discontinued, as are the Type 2's. Type 3's have been stock for 6 years now for KT and Tiger 1 and Sherm and Panther. Just contact Karen at AAF Museum and she will get you the correct set. Use your existing trans mounts for correct hight of the transmissions.
