Pulled the trigger on a Pz IV.

Setting up my summer project, so I ordered a Tammy from Karen.
I'm fighting the urge to go too far with mods beyond some PE clamps and zim, but then I'm sure I'll convince myself it needs screened schurzen.
What I really would like to do is convert it to an E for a DAK version, but I'm not sure how much is different it is from the J. I have a library's worth of Tiger references but I'm pretty light on Pz IV material. I guess I have some surfing to do.
Build log anyone?

KUDOS on the kit.
There are not too many threads on the Tamiya Panzer IV or not many builds at all for that manner! So we expect some pictures soon!

I just converted a HL F to a G, I really enjoy the look and feel of the panzer IV.
I used this site to get me started on some of the variant detail changes http://henk.fox3000.com/pz4.htm
The ausf E has the 'stepped' frontal armor plate, so that will be the biggest reworking required. Things like the early sprockets and cupula are standard to henglong parts (dear god not on a Tamiya!), and single piece doors on the turret sides.
Enjoy it!!

Jeff, since I cleaned the shop I'm all ready for some work and photos. I bet by the end, you'll sick of this one.
Strato50, I have tons of photos of the stepped armor from Aberdeen (can't remember if it was an E), that doesn't concern me, but I didn't think of the sprockets and cupola. I'm not going to put much more cash into this one, time yes, cash no. I do a lot of 'justifying the cost' to drop $800 on a model.
Yelloshaker, good tip, I will.
Mustclime, thanks for the links.

Oh no, I'll never tire of a tank build. So bring it on!
I too am cleaning and re-organizing my "Mission Room" so the bug has hit me to get busy on my projects.
Can't wait to see your new Tamiya!

Hi ausf,
The Squadron "PzKpfw IV in action" clearly shows most of the differences in all the PzIVs. WhyRCtankers don't get most of the in action series on tanks
is beyond me they are pretty cheap and readily available from Squadron.

Going from a J to an E will require a fair amount of rework. In addition to the stepped frontal armor, the sprockets, idler, antenna placement (and mounting), rear mufflers, hull side vision ports and turret doors also differed. Oh...J used steel return rollers and E used rubber tires and the track on the J is wider than the E. This conversion will keep you busy.
Wrong tracks for an E or a DAK tank. Those have the ice cleats, which were not used in North Africa, and are too wide for an E.
I'm building plans to convert an HL F2 to a DAK G. Here's some references that I used or found (haven't reviewed all of the books):

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
Philipat, thanks for that wealth of information. I will be sure to work through those links.
In light of all the differences surfacing between the variants, I'm giving up on the E conversion. Even if I really wanted to take it all on, I'm not looking for a two year build here. I love the Panzer Grey overpainted Sand Yellow, but not that much.
I'd be much better off with some zim and Thoma Schurzen. Besides, my son wants to build a Norman village in our backyard, this would be more at home than as DAK. So it's time to find some brass or copper mesh.

Ausf I'm sure you will love it. What kind of camo & Abteilung are you contemplating? I've promised myself a new Pzr IV kit when as soon as I finish my Tam-long Jagdpanzer IV. I am swamped right now with builds but should have time in late June...I hope.

My distributor has the Spielberger book, but I'm debating whether to grab or just surf the website. Shelf space is a premium at this point, unless I start selling off some stuff I won't have space left.

That's the next step. Most of my ref material is Schwere Abteilungen, so I'll be looking through the Citadel and Kharkov stuff I have. I'll probably be looking for some type of disruptive pattern, but really it's zim and Thoma Schurzen that has my attention, so wherever that takes me.
My distributor has the Spielberger book, but I'm debating whether to grab or just surf the website. Shelf space is a premium at this point, unless I start selling off some stuff I won't have space left.
