The Odd couple

You might be asking .... why is a post war Russian AT-T heavy duty tractor towing a WWII German Rheinmetall K44 artillery piece?
This needs a little explaining, so I used my imagination and fabricated a totally fictitious scenario that is not based on an actual event.
The problem is that the Russian AT-T heavy duty tractor is a post war (cold war) vehicle, and the K44 is a late WWII German artillery piece.
The only story I could think of to explain this combination was to call it a captured German cannon being towed to the Russian Artillery Museum in St. Petersburg, to be displayed as a war trophy.
Hey guys, It's one of those ...... "It coulda happened things" .....but that only sounds reasonable if you have had a few shots of Vodka.
My first idea was to build a Russian Voroshilovets artillery tractor towing a B4 artillery piece. After thinking long and hard about that project, I talked myself out of it. Finding suitable track for that tractor and howitzer was the big problem.I gotta work on a solution for that.
Then I discovered the Russian AT-T tractor, which could use the T-34 lower chassis, (not perfectly accurate), but it looked close enough for me, and it would be a lot simpler and easier to do than scratch building the entire model. I considered building the ML 20 as a towed artillery piece until I ran across the Rheinmetall 12.8cm K44 L/55. That's it ..... I was hooked.
The tractor was an easy build. I have two MSN T-34s and used the bottom half of one of them for this project. All I had to do was build the upper body.
Here is what I have so far. Just a little more detail clean up and it's gonna get a Russian armor green paint job (what else?). The cannon will probably get panzer grey.

Incredible work, Rex. As usual.
It is truly amazing what is lying around in former SSSR, and what's still in use. This past summer there was a train derailment up in Kherson north of us. On TV they clearly showed a pristine T 34 late chassis towing some of the cars out of the way and being used to right some others with cables.

It's 1/16th scale, same as the WSN T-34 that donated the lower hull. Building the trailer bed and cab was easy, I found plenty of photos on a Google search to use as a reference. The cab took a lot of layers of styrene to get the curves ..... lots of filing and sanding and patching with green stuff.

The odd couple have decided to split up and go their separate ways.
It only took a year and a half to finally get around to painting half of this project. I gotta get organized, drop my Dremel tool and pick up a paintbrush.
I really like to scratch build models. I hate to paint them. I'm not good at painting anything that isn't plain old olive drab, afrika mustard or panzer grey. Camo paint jobs scare me. I have 5 airbrushes, 3 are brand new, never used. Over the past 5 years I have built some things that got brush painted, but I also collected 16 projects that I lost interest in once the glue was dry. Also, I don't like to paint things because it will cover up all of the detail work that is evident when it is a bare naked model. Some of my stuff was a lot of work, and I'm a show off who likes to pretend to be humble. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate myself as a 5.78 or maybe a 6.01 on my best day
Things are gonna change. I am going to learn to airbrush camo paint jobs. Then I gotta decide what paint scheme is best for which tank. I'm sure I will be asking for help on this.
Not all of my projects will be camo, not everything was in real life, but I am going to try to post one completed paint project every couple of weeks or so. I'm not going to start anything new until I catch up on the paint back log. I'm hoping that shooting my mouth off about this schedule will force me to keep my word, or come up with a legitimate excuse (or a good lie). I'm glad I tacked a lot of my stuff together with a tiny drop of rubber cement. I can remove things for proper painting and then reassemble it permanently ----- I hope.
Project #1. A Russian ATL tractor (post war).
I have a rattle can of Model Master FS 34079 Dark Green, and it perfectly matches the color of the plastic lower hull of the WSN T-34 that I used to build it. What a lucky break! That kinda makes up for my bad break (fractured hip) that I experienced 3 months ago (and spent my birthday in the hospital --- bummer). Thank goodness I'm about 95% recovered from that.
The paint has dried ------ It's shelf time !!!

I say we arm wrestle for it, that work for you Rex? Winner gets to keep it on a shelf at his house, perhaps just for a year, then we arm wrestle again.

[QUOTE=Martellus;12069539] If you ever build a B4, I want to see that.
~~~~~~~~
I have thought about building a B4, or B4m being towed by a Voroshilovets tractor about as much as I day dream about doing a Dragon Wagon someday. Those two are the ultimate builds to me.
The ATL tractor was kinda easy. The bottom hull was built by WSN and all I had to do is build a bed with 4 simple sides, and the cab was a fun build.
I am NOT looking forward to taking the Rheinmetall K44 apart to paint it. I just gotta bite the bullet on that job.
