Default Need more power!

Looking for some advice in getting more juice into a couple of my Taigen tanks. My Jagdpanther is fairly quick, and I feel a 4:1 gear box wouldn't slow it down to much, but I can't find 1 anywhere. I also have a King Tiger that has decent power, but they both struggle with spins and turns in the shortest of grass. It's kind of disappointing. I have modded a couple of my other tanks with help from this forum, and I was very happy with how they turned out. So do I go with bigger motors, if so, how big? Do I change tooth count on the gear, if so, how much? I'm stumped, and any advice from some veteran tankers would be greatly appreciated from this newbie. Thanks in advance.

You need a Kyosho Electric Blizzard Snow Cat.

If you want to go fast. Tanks are not designed to go any faster than they already are.

You need to get the Gears with a better gear ratio then stock, You will lose some top end but your torque will increase giving you the power required to make those turns in the grass,

Grears are available at many places. I personally use the MATO v2 gears on all my WWII armor.

Panther: Not looking to go faster, I actually wouldn't mind going slower, that's kind of what I'm looking for. I want more torque! I dropped a 4:1 in my bulldog, and it slowed it down quite a bit, but it gave me the torque I was looking for. That's what I want now, but can't find the gearing for the jag, and don't want the k.t. To go slower, but DO want more torque.

Oh, okay!

Better motors (480) and a pinion gear change is what I would start with.

YHR: Thanks, I will take a look and see if they have what I'm looking for.
Panther: What size pinion should I go with, how many teeth? Like I said, I'm pretty new to tanking, but already hooked. Any and all advise I get is much appreciated.

YHR: I went to mato site and found gear set that says it improves power, but it's a 3:1 ratio. I believe they come stock with that. Does the configuration they have make a difference? The ones they have are different than the stock gears, but still 3:1....

Let's see, an 8-T is what you would use with a geardown system (to gain some speed back) so anything larger/over the stock pinion... but you need to get the correct pitch too.

If I remember right, the HL Jagdpanther will suffer the same as the Tamiya as there isn't any room for the geardown.

I'm sure I'll be corrected on some of this! LOL

Sorry I missed this, I have been getting ready for another trade show and have been away from the PC all day. Unfortunately the 4:1 gearboxes are not yet available from us at this time. As suggested above, I would try some different motors to start, possibly a 400 or a 480 motor. This will give you more speed and torque at the same time. I will have the JP gearboxes in the next shipment or two. They are on the top of my list atm.

The MatoV 2.0 are a lower gear ration then the Stock Gears, without being stupid slow.

Gear ratios.

Don't hold too much stock in 4:1, 3:1 etc. Not sure how they have been labeled like they have as these numbers mean little now, and the more gear boxes that get released the more confusing it becomes.

If you upsize the motor without changing the gear ratio you will end up creating more stall amperage being drawn across your ESC in case the tracks get jammed.

Typically I change the gears to get the torque I am looking for and then change the motor to get back some speed if required.

I am running Promax 480s with Stock gears in a Leopard though with an RX 18, and so far so good. This tank needs the torque without a loss of speed so I stayed with the original gears. But like I said for WWII armor I stick with the Mato V 2.O gears to supply the torque with realistic speed. Walthersons used to distribute something similar that had different pinions you good use. That might be a good option too if you can find them anywhere.

Panther: Thanks for the info! I'm on my way to my local hobby shop now to see if they can help. They have a very large choice of just about any rc part made. I'm sure they'll be able to find what I need.
Erik: You have been a big help to me since I got into tanking, and seeing that all my tanks are Taigen, I'm sure you'll be hearing from me in the future. I may hold off on the jag gearing if you may have them soon. I'd prefer to get parts that are made by Taigen when they are available. Great customer support at Imex. So keep me posted about that shipment and I'll gladly wait. And LMK about those kv-1 gears also.
YHR: Thanks for that input. I may go with those for the k.t. If I can't get the results im looking for at the hobby shop. Like I said, I did it with my bulldog, and couldn't be happier. I added some weight to it and went with metal road wheels, and it rips through whatever I put it through. Also spent hours painting bed liner on the track pads. Man..... This whole tanking thing really takes you over doesn't it......

You could be cheap and add what we in the rc racing scene used to call torque rings
Pretty much a piece of steel around the can that confines the magnetism to the armature. Also could
use comm drops on the brushes to enhance seating of the brushes. If i remember correctly
graupner made bearing supported 400's and 480's. I zap my magnets in my tank as it increases the
magnetism and produce more torque. And also keeping the motors cool( add small brushless fan). Hot motors lose efficentcy
and thats what robs torque..yes i worked at trinity here in nj building motors for rc racing!!

Zapping magnets does not increase the magnets strength or "magnetism" but makes them more efficient by aligning the grains/poles correctly. Replacing the ceramic motor magnets with a rare earth type would increase the magnet strength but then the stock wiring of the arm and its small window couldn't handle it. You would have to go with a hotter winding.

Wrapping a 'flux' around the motor is one way but replacing those little 380 motors is the key. Then if you're not happy do some pinion swapping... but you will have to elongate the motor mounts some to make up for the pinion diameter.

Let us know what you did!

If i get a chance this weekend im going to make a jig to dyno the lil 380's and see what i can do to get more torque.. I have2 dynos for rc cars, along with motor magnet zappers, batter z appers and matchers, hoping toseewhat kind of numbers i can get( i used to excell at stock racing, getting my motors teched almost every other race) im also going to rewind a motor or 2 ( i have a motor armature welder) and try to balance the armature. Maybe if in my parts bins if i have bearings ill replace them. Uf you have ever. Raced rc , you should know erine p( owner) started with slot cars. I will send put a message to motor guru jim dieter to see what i can do.. Ill keep you updated to my progress...

Wow! Thanks, really to all of you. I now have a plethora of choices to go with. My local hobby shop was a bust. They didn't have much of a selection of parts as I thought. The next biggest motor they had up from a 380 was a 540! I have heard of guys using them and seen pics, but my skill level is not up to par for that much . It was a super tight fit in the pics I saw. I may go with the mato set up, seems a lil bit easier to just drop it in, but if I don't test myself I'll never learn. I may try to squeeze some bigger motors in even if I do go with different gearing. Either way, I will let y'all know what path I chose, and how it ends. I appreciate all the input and time you vets have given me. I defiantly will soak up all the knowledge you throw my way. I've very much enjoyed this hobby since I started, and hope one day I may be able to post some tips of my own. Thanks again, and any new suggestions are welcome.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. Here are some VERY decent motors:

Or go even further and put a REAL transmission in it:

I hope I didn't complicate your choices!

I replaced the bushings in my black steelgear trans with flamged bearings from dynamite( horizon hobby)
also shimmed it to get rid of excess side movement, used a combo of shims from ofna for a cluch bell shim kit and from team losi( supension shim kit) found tbese were cheapand made a nice differance in the gear noise. Next thing will to lower the pinion size,
the shim kits cost a total of about12$$ and the beatings around 20$$ not bad id say id go with panthers 400 motor idea.. The 380's are weak.im thinking of a 2esc with sensoed brushless system next.. Sensored is the way to go if going this route

Its also possible to use cheaper Jamara Li-Power 480 Pro /4,5EUR/ - the same as M02 motors from ETO

Do you have a link or a part number for the bearings that you used? How about some pictures of the mods you made? They sound pretty good.

Best thing you can do is get a 4 to 1 gearbox ( Ignore the pic, its wrong and I have to update it ) http://shop.immortalhobbies.com/Stee...8758875888.htm
then a set of the 480 motors http://shop.immortalhobbies.com/480-...210121480M.htm
If purchased from my site I will pull the pinions off the stock gears and replace them on the new motors correctly so the motor shafts are not bent.
Changing the pinion alone will not do much to help achieve the goal of more torque, Changing just the motor will not help enough either. Especially if you have metal tracks and lots of metal parts
What you need to do is change the stock gearing AND the torque and rpm input of the motor driving the gears. The 4 to 1 steel gearbox is a good investment especially if you have a Tiger/KV, King or any of the bigger tanks, the 480 motors will amaze at how much power they have.
Because the JP is turretless you need even more torque just to spin to align your shots. The combo offered above will more than satisfy your requirement

Hello everyone I am also new to the tank scene but have been messing around with rock crawlers for quite some time, I am looking to purchase some smaller pinions for my kv-1 but don't know what mod pitch fit these transmissions, thanks for any help.

DHey caddy, I don't know a whole lot, but I also have a kv-1. I don't know what brand yours is, but I have a Taigen, and of all my Taigen tanks my kv is by far the weakest! It's very fast and no torque. That's the reason I asked for help. From what I got from others is that just changing the pinion is not enough. I just ordered new gears and motors for the kv. I don't know what your trying 2 get out of it, but if you have a question you want more answers to, just post your own thread. You'll get alot more responses,. There's alot of way more knowledgeable people on here that'd Be more than happy to offer advise.

Thanks blaze! I will start my own thread, I already bought some motors but have questions on that also, thanks for your help! o I also have a taigen in hc series, I also feel speed wise is a bit fast and torque a bit weak.
