Default Servos for recoil and elevation

I've read some of the threads that cover using servos as recoil units. Is the only way they are used is in a channel coupling mode?

Has anyone semi 'hacked' a servo to use it as a small gear motor directly without a control board to be controlled by a TBU, Clark or any other BU?
( by semi hacked I mean without an small external pot needed to center the unit to be used with a radio system.)

Just curious if it's been done.

I used the HL elevation unit for this one, but have also hacked Servos to be the motor. Remove the control board and they are nothing more then gear motors.

And here is a link to an actual thread on building a recoil with a gutted servo

Instead of the cost of a servo and having to hack it, these are available all over ebay...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/361063342336
Only $4 apiece ($16 for 4, free shipping, no tax). From China in 7 days, tracking info was provided, Paypal payment used....no problem.
Very small - see pic with AA battery - very smooth, quiet, very powerful. Used one already for a simple elevation unit.
Be sure to get the 6RPM at 3V model for elevation, turret rotation. They are available in many RPM ranges.
I'm amazed at how small and powerful they are...and cheap too.

I removed the boards from two Futaba 2003s and use them in my SU-100 for elevation and traverse. I added microswitches to travel end points.
