Default Flack Panzer part 2

Going to start the other Flak turret ,made up the basic frame and styrene tubes to give me an idea of the servo positions for the AA guns.

Styrene 1st fix , basic shape. The Takom 1/35 turret i am working off. Rods in to workout position of elevation supports.

With any luck it will end up like this.

Some more progress, made up the top set of AA guns . Nylon tube and brass for the central pivot point. The ELMOD board and some other stuff for builds have arrived, next up will be servo for the 1st set of AA guns.

AA gun housing.

High position

Low position

Elmod board for control.

Checked the turret base for square against a tank hull, looked OK. Next was servo and a gear setup for the elevation then fit the fixing for the turret ring and do a test run . Just set the servo range and check if the turret was centred.
Next up will be the lower AA guns.

Thanks Maus45 for looking in. Completed the lower AA gun unit . Added another tube as the lower unit has 3 slots , sighting or MG? After testing the servo position went back and strengthen the servo housings. Had a problem with the 1st flak turret, the servos were working loose and needed a fix.

The drums and gearing for elevation.

3rd lower slot , sighting or elevation?

Checking for any tight spots

Servo housing, looks rough but will soon be boxed in and hidden.

Started the front of the turret as its the difficult section , all the other sides will be flat or slightly curved. Cut the plate joints with a dremel bur and cut back the front for the curve on the front plate.

Some filler and a rub down for primer.

Cut along line and below to put a curve in the front plate. Easier to make square then cut.

Before i start on the sides its time to think about maintenance , no use boxing everything in if i have to fix something and find i can't remove it. Fitted sleeves for the support tubes , now able to slide them to one side and remove the cylinders for the AA guns. Another side glued on , styrene was too thick to curve round at rear made it in 2 parts. Photos show up all the little faults like glue not bonding along edges.

support to slide rod lower one

top one

The easier side.

A few adjustments after checking the angles , need to fix the upper drum to correct size and fix the angle of the upper front plate.

Size and shape to correct , wrong angle on top front plate

Reshaping for a smaller drum

Drum fitted

Curved covers for the drum

Weld lines to replicate

Weld lines cut out, and top plate at correct angle.

A tidy up round the weld lines then some primer.

The 1/35 kit uses a Panther cupola, as this is a paper/ what if turret will use a Panther F cupola. They were going to standardise parts for easy maintenance .

Hit a problem with the AA gun flash , was going to use fibre optic for the flash . Able to fit in lower one but upper will not work , thinking about micro leds. May redo camo as the smaller numbers look odd and were a pain to spray.

No space to route fibre down tubes and thro small drum.

worn and scratched paint , next will be some oil paint for grime.

Not my best stencil work, quite hard to line up the stencils after the 1st colour.

As i am waiting for bits and pieces, made a base/test bed . Don't have any spare upper hulls left. Cant be bothered balancing a turret or removing a turret to plug into a board. Will be easier to check servo, flash, recoil and elevation.
Should have fitted ring underneath

Fitted a continuous servo converted to a motor and a connection board.

Fitted the Leds for the flash, need to redo the upper drum for the AA barrels. A pain routing cables thro the drum and the gearwheel and servo is on wrong side for cables, as they might snag. Will make a sound set up to sync with the flash and fine tune the servos before painting the barrels
