Default Mission Models paints for washes

I have two colors of Mission Models paints that can be thinned with water, having no experience with this at all, how thin am I looking for? From videos I've gotten the need to wet the surface I'm working on since it's acrylic, played a bit with a battery door, I like the shading but it doesn't seem to flow along detail lines very well, am I doing something wrong, doing it all wrong or just need to thin it more?

Begin thinning alot, like just a few drops of paint in small glass of thinner: you can always repeat the process with less thinning in selected areas until you are satisfied
