Default Engine grills,

Does anyone know where to get engine grills for HL tiger. Tank zone did have them but they are discontinued, I am pretty sure I saw some at Back Yard Armour but now I don't see them anymore. Any idea where you can get the covers?

Thanks mates!

Hi Konigstiger

You could make your own as I did - I have still to post photos of them on another thread but I cannot get the camera to take clear pictures [:@]. You can get wire mesh easily from a lot of sources, I got mine on ebay at £3 for a sheet that will do several Tigers. You first start by making a template out of Masking tape by laying it over the area you need and trimming until you get the correct size and shape for one of the screens. Once the mask is complete you stick it on the mesh and cut round it. Once you have the wire for the grill you can edge it with aluminium foil from a pie plate or such like as long as it is reasonably sturdy - aluminium cooking foil is just too thin. Cut it to the correct length for the edge of the grill you are working on but twice as wide as you need. Then fold it over the edge attaching with a little super glue or two part epoxy. Once all the edges are done you can glue it to the engine deck and it looks just like a miniature of the real thing.

I will try again to get some photos but I hope all the above makes it understandable what I did.

Cheers

ah very interesting, how did you find wire mesh on e-bay lol, does not seem a likely thing to find! It would be great if you could post some pics!
I will do it if I have time, I am so busy I was looking for premade but if no one knows where to find them I will have to make them!

Well...

If its close enough, you could use either the Aber or the Tamiya ones. If HL copied the Tamiya that close, those two should fit fairly close.

If you wanna do it cheap, look in the craft stores, they make some brass mesh (looks like window screening but its brass) and then just cut to shape and put solder some brass strip around the edge. More work, but you may come out cheaper.

If you just want the look to be 'close enough' you can probably ask the guy that does the re-screening at your local hardware store for a few screening scraps, cut 'em to size, and presto.

An alternate way to do the edging along gorehound's idea is that aluminum tape. Cut it into strips, tape the upper edge and fold it over, and it'll stick to itself around the wire. Can be used on both the metal and fibreglas window screening options.

Hi

I agree with Whitewolf on the tape as it is easier to use but I found it does not take paint well though so it depends on what you want it to look like.

As for the mesh, this is the stuff I bought. Will do at least a couple of tanks possible more if you are careful with the cutting.

Hope this helps.

I got fiberglass window screen from Home Depot, like $5.00 for enough for an entire Panzer Division.LOL. The fiberglass screen is easy to cut and takes paint well too.

I found a site that has them (tamiya) grills for 12.50 US, which to me is a good price. I think it's [link]http://www.etamiya.com[/link]

Gorehound:

Small pieces of fibreglas screening can be obtained usually gratis if you ask for trimmed scraps when the guy is repairing 'em. All you have to do is ask, and have other stuff you are buying in hand, and they'll usually give 'em free or bag 'em and charge ya a penny as a nominal fee.

If you use the fibreglas stuff (it takes primer & paint just fine) and can be edged with simple Micropore paper tape. Its that white or tan tape that is one of the two main ones used in hospitals (the other clear-breathable plastic stuff is horrid!) In a pinch, put the paper tape over the aluminum, then paint as usual. The tape ends up a bit fuzzy, so sand off the fuzz and repaint.

Lots of places carry both the Aber and Tamiya grill sets, you just need to look about.

Hi Whitewolf

Not sure what the fibreglass screening is. I live in the UK so it may not be used here or called something different.

Hi Whitewolf

I received the fibreglass stuff you sent me - very much appreciated and if I can ever return the favour please let me know. It looks pretty good and I will be trying it on the next build. It is similar to the metal stuff but will be easier to cut. Once I get it finished I will post some photos of the two types for others to make their own minds up.

PS. I am investing in a new camera so the shots will hopefully be better than my previous attempts

Cheers
