Default Sherman Turret

I'm having problems with the turret rotation on my Sherman, but the rotation unit is working fine, the unit gears are fine and the turret ring gear is fine.

There seems to be too much room between the hole in the upper hull and the section of the turret that goes into it.......seems loose and shifts around. The result is that the ring gear and the rotation unit are not meshing together at all points during the traverse and the turret stops. I don't understand how it happened. Nothing is obviously missing or out of alignment, but the guide wheels (inside upper hull) are not holding the turret ring in the center so that the rotation unit stays in constant contact.

I don't get it. Anyone have any ideas? I cannot make the hull hole for the turret any smaller (obviously), I cannot relocate the guide wheels (no other mounting posts) and I cannot figure out why it is not working correctly, all of a sudden. [:'(]

Thanks!
Jason

it looks like something is missing on the turret,
the ring gear is definitively too high.
just lower the turret ring gear with shims.

i never had a tamiya rc. , only the 1:25 motorized panther

or maybe:
as a mecanic ,
when i see things like this ,usualy it is a part that had been replaced with
a part from another vehicule, works but not the real thing.
i suspect that your ring gear is not the original or there is a missing piece in that sector.
did you get it brand new ?
hope this helps

Ahhhh, no I got it used from Nemesis4u and he is not running on all cylinders. He probably built the darn thing wrong. The thing is that it used to work alright, but lately the performance has gone down hill. []

Tomorrow night I will have to experiment with your shim idea. Thanks, Schutzstaffel! [sm=thumbup.gif]

Jason,

Some people wrap tape around the outside of the turret ring to help push the teeth into the gears. I have placed a wire tie around the gearbox to try and stiffen it.

Check this page out for more hints. (Southeast Armored Divisions Tech Page)

Good luck

Hi Icecream I took some photos of mine take a look.
After looking at your photos it seems like someone ground the outter edge around the big gear on the turret off for some reason...you can see by how thin the ring is compaired to mine.

I used a thick rubber band, wrapped around the outer edge, problem solved!
