Ah man I had one of those back then as well. Now that takes me back... Drove over too many firecrackers and it suddenly got stuck in a right turn! I miss that tank! <sniffle>

RE: First RC tank! What was yours?
My first was a King Tiger as well...
It was one of the older 56004 clutched ones, back in the mid 80's. The poor beast had been rather abused, and many of the track guards were damaged or missing, and the hull and turret had been abused along with a shattered barrel.
I managed to patch the barrel together, and luckily the flash was intact, and then used something odd for fake-zimmerit: something new back then, that paper-type medical tape. It gave an odd textured surface that most thought was rather decent. As for the track guards, they were rebuilt from loaners using Coke cans with more paper-tape covering (the aluminum HATED paint) This was before Tamiya USA and AAF's easy access to spares, ok?
Some of the offroaders volunteered to helped me ding up the guards in a decent manner to simulate battle damage in a 'friendly' game of 'Tag' on a marble floor... until I decided to run over someone's nice new bodyshell, and they decided to cry foul. Hey, isn't that what a tank would do when playing tag with civilian cars?
Now, the inventory is two clutched Leo 1A4's, a MF Sherman, and simple DMD'd Pershing, as well as a Blizzard/PistenBully snowcat that will become some form of AFV/APC as well.

First one I ever had was a semi-scale M1A1 Abrams painted in a camouflage olive green and tan pattern (generic). It had a rather fancy two-stick transmitter for the time and the tank operated with very basic functions: forward, left turn, right turn, and reverse but no turning in reverse. It was correctly scaled, more or less, with the small GI Joes and one could fit with legs bent in the commander's hatch.
Turret traverse was manual meaning you had to pose it yourself and the main gun was fixed (no elevation). No other functions to speak of as it was very basic.
The transmitter was labeled Power Command so I think that is the brand.
I still have it somewhere...

RE: First RC tank! What was yours?
My first was one from Tandy/RadioShack in the mid 80's, think it was a Leopard 1 (without side skirts) in 1:24 scale. Was a great little tank and got a lot of use until the tracks broke. It wasn't possible to get spares for it so that was the end of that! Seem to remember the controller having a simple accelerate button, with a small steering wheel above to direct it. Wish I had a photo of it somewhere!

RE: First RC tank! What was yours?
Well, this whole "first RC tank" thing got me thinking, so I went on that little website called eBay and low and behold found a boxed example of the very same tank I used to have! It is definitely a Leopard 1, but has a white star on each of the front mudguards, and says "Radio Shack" across the front of the hull. One quick bid later and the tank was mine for the princely sum of £7.25!!! Will hopefully post some pics when it arrives!!

PS These second childhoods are great!!!

My 1st R/C tank was a 1:25 scale Tamiya Tiger1 that I converted from wired remote control to R/C using a World 4ch airplane r/c system back when I was stationed at Luke AFB Az in the 70's. Tank power was supplied by 4 C batteries, no turret rotation was ever installed and no speed control simple 3 position switches to control the motors via servos.
Yes it worked for several years.
