Default Know a good 12V ESC?

I'm looking for a single-motor 12V ESC with reverse for my 12V motor and battery combination. The ESC's I've found so far are for boats. Anybody knows of a good 12V ESC for tank use?

Hi Rich most likely a boat esc is what you will have to use , boat ESC's let you go with a lot of cells high voltage to make a electric boat scream...I know i also have boats

Boat ESC's will work just fine, Alot of car ESC's Have a brake and slower reverse. You could also look up MCD or Vantec. I do large scale Warships and use MCD and Vantec.

Check these ESCs, small, effeective and cheap. I've mounted two Thor 5 in my first HL conversion and still runs fine

Thanks guys. I might go with the XTRA Quantum Boat ESC F/R 6-12V. It can handle up to 440 amps peak, 128 amps continuous, and 5-10 cells.

My concern is it can only handle motors between 18-36 turns, and I don't know how many turns the LPR 12V Truck Puller 2 motor has. LRP doesn't provide that info on their website: [link]http://www.lrp-electronic.de/e/lis/[/link]

I use these in my 1/6 Stuarts (12v.)

They have worked great so far.

Novak also makes the EVX 14.4 volt esc for use in dual motored monster trucks. They are almost bomb proof and not very expensive. Regards, John Z

Richard,

I could be way off-base here, but I believe that you should be concerned with current handling capability. I'm new to to tanks and electric heli's, so I could be all wet. you can use an 11.1 volt ESC with a 12 Volt supply, if your current draw is, say, 2/3 of the ESC rating without worry of overheating. Ask BIGMIG, I think he has some experience with power issues.

My 2-bits, hope to be of some help.

Sorry Splat, you shouldn't use a lower voltage ESC on a higher voltage supply. They do have limits where things will burn out, even if the motors aren't plugged in! (capacitors have voltage ratings, the BEC circuit has to dissipate more volts and overheats, ICs get too much voltage, etc).

You may be able to get away with a bit of over-voltage, but it's not a good idea, especially in helis! Stick to the voltage and current ratings.

I will say that I hate the trend of car/truck ESCs rating current handling in "turns". ***?

Thanks. I'm looking for an ESC to control a single motor only.

In a good design, the caps should be rated close to twice the working voltage that they are likely to see.
The IC's are linears and should stand a little overvoltage without exhibiting any problems, but I'll give you that one.
The BEC,,, Oops, yup, shunting more volts (and don't forget that means current) means more heat. heat is a BAD thing! Ya got me Darkith! I stand corrected. Your logic is impecable, resistance is futile........ (thanks Dark. I said I could be all wet).

Richard,

Please disregard previous. I am all wet and, if heeded, am likely to be the cause of one of your fantasticly sculpted and painted wonder tanks ending up a flaming puddle of plastic...... Sorry

Which of the robotpower ESCs do you use for your Stuart?

I use the Scorpion XL. Its held up great and I will be using these on some future projects.

BTW. There is a exciting project comming up involving 1/6th scale tanks that look to be very nice and very affordable.
