Hello all. I have been browsing this forum for a little less than a year, and have developed a very small tolerance for new members as they ask the same thing over and over. I know I know, I'm sure I did the same, but is there some way we can create a new catagory for new people? Its getting very old logging on and have the same old 'My Tiger is broken, how can i fix it?' questions posted on a weekly basis.
Any thoughts?

I thought that is what these forums were for. To help and get help. To make tanking a lot more fun. Not all problems are the same. Even though they all sound the same, each may have a different answer. I am new to this forum and I am glad to know questions I have, maybe annoying to some.

As a new member, but long standing member of other forums I can kind of understand what you say.
But the truth is that most search engines are crap and it is hard to find the info you want.
TBH, IMO, if you are fed up of answering the same questions either make a FAQ or dont answer.

yes i've got a thought, if you can't tolerate new people and helping them out maybe you should start a catagory for yourself, these forums are for everyone.

I have NO Hen Long tanks. So why read the post?
There are far more here qualified to answer them and other discussions going on.

Gentlemen...Let's look at this from a different perspective.
Todays "embryonic" post might be tomorrows "interesting" post. Let's face it we all had to start somewhere and all people on here are asking for advice, from time to time, on all levels.
So why don't we just help the new people, as you did me and keep the forum alive and kicking.
Just my thoughts Gentlemen.
Nick.

So a newbie asks a question and there are only newbies to try and answer???
I thought this was a place where you could ask people with expertise for help.
It's bad enough on some forums when you ask for help you get over 100 views and not one answer.
Maybe start a new snooty forum where certain questions are considered dumb and not to be answered.

I think that we should have a "lunch box" part of our section just like the bigger ones do. there we can put pics of our outing and new products and stuff we want and such. then keep this part to the questions and mods and stuff.

Well you have to remember we all started they same way, asking questions that had been asked who knows how many times before.
It does get repetative but thats what keeps the forum going.I just looked at the members on-line here on the forum just before starting this reply. There was 27 members and 17 of which I see thier names almost on a daily bassis. Not many of those 17 have a current build going on,at least that they are posting.Starting about in December this forum has realy slowed down,I thought after Christmas it would realy pick up.NOT THE CASE at all.If it was not for some new guys coming on and looking for answers to questions there will be less and less guys on this forum.I have went on here several times at 10 oclock at night with only 5 or 6 members on the forum, thats not what you would expect to see for a forum that is free and open to anyone around the world. There is a certain amount of intimmadation by some members who complain about guys that are wanting to get into tanking and other builds and more or less stating that to be accepted on this forum they must build there tanks according to how they think they should be built. This falls in line with the old saying "bitting the hand that feeds you".We all need to incurrage more members, not run them off.The tone of some of the replys on here is not very conductive to a person wanting to ask a follow up question. This is a place to learn and have fun and a lot of people are buying tanks just for having fun with them.If it was just us small amount of people on this forum buying RC tanks, the tank industry would be broke and all of them out of business. We need to be gratefull we have this forum
and it is as active as it is.I have looked around somewhat at different forums,go look at some of the strictly Tamiya forums and see what you find. For me I even got a P.M. from one of the members on here(name will not be mentioned)who stated that my collection of tanks was all junk. This coming from a guy who only has probbly three tanks himself I found rather ammusing. But at least he did have enough sense to keep it more private in a P.M. where as a couple others have been more public with there unwanted opinions.
It is this kind of stuff that kills a forum,And a reply like this does not help either. But sometimes it needs to be said.

I guess if you don't want to read the post don't. I don't read them all. Oh, and BIGMIG....I appreciate all the helpful feedback you have given to me and others on this forum. You are one of the good guys.

I'd rather be on a forum where people aren't afraid to ask dumb (to some people) questions that have been asked many times before then be on one were you're only allowed to ask professional type questions that nobody has asked before. I can never get the search engine to work and I even have trouble finding my own posts.
BIGMIG- Your tanks are "junk"
, according to my girlfriend all RC tanks are junk and a complete waste of money even the Jagdpanther I've been building for the past year is junk[&o]. But I love my junk.

I will agree with your statement big mig as i've never been one for the acuaracy of a model it really doesn't matter to me if the black i use is correct or not [
]
and anyway we were all "newbies " once and just to see a thread like this has got my back up as it really is not needed If I can help I will if not I wont stick my nose in I'll let someone that does
This really is as silly as the hen/tam hecklers and vice versa[:@]
so come on guys let's not be petty and if you've read a post by some guy who's just bought a hen/tam off evilbay and doesn't know were to stick the batteries give em a shout as weve all been there
same thing goes if you don't like something don't read it/or input on it.It really isnt that difficult
After all its not life or death it's a personal hobby that should be enjoyed and when the enjoyment goes you've had it
I'm sure we will overcome this and enjoy the builds once again
so to one and all if ive painted something the wrong colour tell me if i change it or not thats my decision but thanks for the info might do it differently next time
If i stick a bulldog turret on my tamiya sherman then i will and if i like it it'll stay if not the sherman one will go back on
So to all the noobs reading this dont be shy that dopey question might just lead us to the path of enlightenment if not we can just have a bit of a laugh and think yea that was me not that long ago

I joined this forum just before Christmas and have already gotten great help and ideas. I lack the funds for much in the way of builds or upgrades, but using the forum I've made a list of vendors, ideas and helpful threads for when I do have the money.
I think that Oliverlove does have a good idea, though only in part. I like the way Hobby Havoc has sub-forums depending upon the tank model or manufacturer. It makes it easy to find a build or upgrade that is unique to a manufacturer or model. Maybe that would help here...create some sub-forums for builds and upgrades specific to a model. Leave the main forum open to general questions and help.
Anyhow, I appreciate the patience with my seemingly mundane questions and the links to past threads that I couldn't find in the search engine (usually because I was searching on the wrong word
).

Well excuse me for stepping on some toes but it needed to be said. To all the new guys, sorry I made you feel dumb, but as I stated we were all there once.
To respond to a few comments, there is a FAQ section, and most of the HL questions are answered in that post. There is another option, the search feature, although I know you get lots of junk along with the good answers. A great way to start on this forum if you are a HL owner is to read through some of the longer posts and see what people have done in the past as builds.
Bigmig - I agree that new people are what keeps this forum going, that is to a certain extent. New interest and new projects is what keeps people motivated to keep working and going out and running their tanks, the same questions over and over again don't help anyone, it simply is lazyness. If your not willing to scroll through the pages of the forum to look for an answer then you don't deserve one. This type of thing happens on all forums, people want an answer right away so they start a new post, and then if they have another question they start another new one.
There are certian levels of this hobby, the beginer with a HL straight out of the box, having a great time running it around. Something breaks, they log on the web to find some help and find us. This is where I started and its fun isn't it? This tanker is the very bottom of the barrel, they need guidance and help alot of the time, but thats a good thing as long as they are putting in some effort.
The next stage is the 2 tank owner, they fixed the first HL and bought another, this is normally where you see projects really start to show up, they are confident enough to post pics and do some more serious mods.
The 3rd stage is the complete re-build of HL's, builds such as YHR's Panther/Pantiger where the modeler is using the model as a median and creating what he wants.
4th - The tamiya owner, building and working on Tamiya's, a whole new level of tanking.
5th - Scrathbuilding your own tanks, and large scale tanking.
Now my whole point is that very few 4th and 5th stage tankers want to hear about another broken gearbox in a Tiger, they are looking for other modelers working on similar projects. I'm not belittling the HL's or the begining stages I'm just saying I wish there was a way to sub-divide so you could put posts where they belong, grouped with similar type posts.
Speaking of which, the War Room, its for real tanks, not models. Nor does questions about R/C go in the war room. May as well get it all out at once. Feel free to get pissed at me, but this is how I feel and I am entitled to my opinion.
Keep tankin.

I'm very new to this forum and I think one of the more attractive features of it is the general willingness to help or at least comment -- so that all messages have some kind of response.
It's true that sometimes those with questions don't seem to have made any attempt to research the subject or even to have looked at the FAQ. However, let's face it -- it's the helpless who need help the most.
Also arcane queries may be stimulating, but few are be able to answer and that limits discussion. Questions of the "Where does the battery go?" ilk, may be daft, but at least even I feel well qualified and happy to attempt an answer, if need be.
Fortunately, I might add, my Tiger still isn't broken, but when it eventually succumbs, please feel free to skip my post.

I hear what you are saying, but this hobby doesn't have the critical mass for what you wish. Break it up into sub forums, and you'll end up with a whole lot of nothing. There are a few more Tamiya tankers showing up now, but that is because many Heng Long tankers have bought Tamiya's Seperate us into groups, and the forum will die.
Check out other forums that have many different sub forums. The most widely accessed sub forum is the forum that hosts general discussion!!!!!!. That is what drives a forum.
If we had 5 pages of new threads everyday I might tend to agree with you, but this forum barely keeps rolling as it is. Seperate into sub forums and the discussion will slow down to a snails pace.
That is my opinion.
I am happy to answer new questions. The guy you help today with a stupid tank question, could very well be the guy that helps you with a stupid electronics question. We need to be friendly and inviting.

I am very new to this and i do sympathise with what Olivelove is saying. I can have a tendancy to be lazy and ask before looking so i appologise for that.
However, and in line with another newbie, i don't have a lot of cash and for me to pick up a RC tank for £23 from eBay instead of £70+ retail means a whole new world has opened up for me.
I'm 43yrs old today
and living a little dream as i drive my 'cheap & nasty' HL no smoke or sound PzIII around the garden.
Reading the forums for me has been inspiring but there's a lot to learn for a newbie and I for one want to learn from others expertise, errors or mistakes, i will always pass on what i think are good ideas.
Generaljumbo was a 60's comic character that had his own RC fighting force!!!!! Today East Stoke.............. Tomorrow the world!!!![X(][X(]
Did I mention it's my birthday

Can't sleep as Mr Parcelforce might bring me a Heng Long Panther[sm=shades_smile.gif][sm=shades_smile.gif][sm=shades_smile.gif]
Please don't get fed up with the same old stuff, it wasn't long ago that it wasn't possible to communicate with another tank nutter half way across the world!
Thank you to those members that do help and have helped me.
On Oliveloves list I'm stage 1 pushing 2

Stages, levels? Give me a break, so anyone who likes working with HL or something else remain in this lower stratum.
Upper echelon reserved for Tamiya and scratchbuilt only please, that's your way to class this forum not mine.
