Ok so I thought going about upgrading my HL Tiger 1 would be easy. You know, buy the parts then install, have fun, ect. But nOoOOoo. So the things that have me confused the most would be the Hi-Torque motors breaking in the items motors/gearboxs.
First the motors. I've read posts here such as the motor and gearbox testing (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_58...tm.htm#5876157) started by swathdiver. Yea I didn't understand it. Right now I have a stock non S&S HL Tiger 1 and am looking for a high Torque motor to allow going over grass and other harder terrain with more ease.
Anyone have any suggestions? Also where I'd be able to get them? Keep in mind though that I wont be breaking them in. I read the walkthrough in the FAQ but I don't have much knowledge of it so I'd rather not do it.
So is there a motor that wont have to be broken in other then playing with it? Then lastly about breaking in metal Gearboxes, is it really needed?
Anyway thanks for any help that comes my way. Hopefully I'll get the hang of this sooner then later.

well you have to watch out if your going to add bigger motors the main board may not be able to take the extra load some guys put small computer cpu fans or the pc chip fans to help keep power transistors cool and heat sinks others go for a 3 to 1 reduction gearbox with more torque and keep the same 380 motors .
thanks

I am far from being an expert here, but I have two Tigers. Both S&S, one with metal gears and one with plastic. Are you running with metal gears now, or planning to add them? I only ask because from what I've read, if you add the bigger motors you run the chance of overheating and blowing your circuit boards. My metal geared Tiger runs much better in grass than the plastic gear tank and I can only assume that it is because of the added weight. I'll say this, if I bought the plastic geared tank first, I would not have bought a second one. There is that much of a difference... and as you will read here, metal tracks only improve it that much more but I'm still saving my pennies for those.
Oh, I forgot, you said yours is non S&S... different circuit boards. You may want to upgrade there as well for the proportional speed control the S&S boards offer.

If you don't change the electronics there's nothing to do as the increased power will blow your existing board.
Now, let's say you had the Smoke and Sound electronics in your Tiger and you want some more power and torque. Simply buying the Asiatam 3-1 gearboxes with the included black capped suntech motors will be fine. These motors should be the same ones currently in your old non-S&S Tiger.
Buy choosing not to break in the gearboxes you run the risk of blowing your circuit board due to increased resistance from the friction generated by the gears. It takes a couple hours and is not hard to do at all. We'll happily walk you through it.
As a safety measure I like to have a fan blowing on my boards heatsink. However, as my testing has shown, the 3-1 gearboxes allows the motors to run at fewer amps then they would in the original gearbox. It's your call, and money.

Have you tried the original HL upgrade kit for tiger tank that were coming with high performance metal gear motors?

Wesky,
This is not new this is the standard upgrade that most of us go too and those are the metal gearboxes and motors the we recommend that you break them in first see the FAQ section! Also you can by them with these factory installed from RCScalemodel.com and other places..

hmm i see. Well I wouldn't mind replacing the electronics if its simple enough I just have to find them. Any ideas? But alright I get what you guys are saying. Get other motors and I'll fry my board. I doubt I'll be able to put in a fan so I think I'm going to just upgrade with the Metal gearboxes, metal tracks and metal drive wheels for now. Pretty basic but safer for now. Thanks for the advice.
Oh yea, If anyone can point me in the direction of a S&S board that would be great. Changing that wouldn't effect the rest of the tank would it? I mean the receiver for the Controller and what not would it?

Yes, you will need a new radio if you have the non S & S and you need the RX- 13 or 14 board and data cable and new receiver board with crystals! RCTankwars.com has boards and cheaper then I have posted on my wbesite and I have the radios also! I have all these parts and metal gear box with black cap motors,, plus smoker units if you would like one of these also!
e-mail me at [email protected] or PM me.

I can highly recommend Blitz and RCTankWars, he offers a wide range of products and services at competitive prices, and he's very patient with questions and concerns from newcomers to the hobby.
