I recently aquired a used Tamiya Leopard 2A6 at a redicously low price. The only catch was that it is missing the gearboxes and the motors that drive them. All I seem to find at online shops are the complete kits for the tanks themselves or stuff like tracks/wheels, but no gearboxes for them. I can find boxes for other Tamiya tanks no problem but its my understanding that the Leo uses different boxes and motors. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi, The two type 540 motors are relatively easy to find. The bigger task is getting together all the parts to build the gearbox. If the tank you bought did not come with the assembly manual, check out WACKY'S RC TANK GUIDES and go thru steps 1 to 10 of the 2A6 manual. All parts needed are clearly shown. The only source that can put them all together is the factory itself through the dealer/distributor.

Thats what I was afraid of. Are there any other gearboxes that will fit the Leo drive sprocket, or am I going to have to use some other gearbox and rig the sprockets so they fit? I don't care if the gearbox is for the Leo or even Tamiya, I just want something that will work with the minimal amount of fuss getting said item to work. I have a pretty good job, but I can't just buy random gearboxes until I find one that fits. The job also prohibits spending alot of time working on things. I'm generally gone for 3 1/2 weeks out of a month(I'm a truck driver). Thank you for your help Phasor.

Have you tried these guys? They seem to make and carry a great many Leopard parts and accessories. They also speak English if you want to email them.

The Tamiya Leo gear boxes must be assembled, they are not pre-assembled like in the WWII kits.

For R/C kits, the part numbers are located in the last few pages of the instruction manual. R/C kits have five and seven digit part numbers associated with them. Example: 53450 or 0005368. *Note: Many people often confuse the alphanumeric construction numbers, (MA4, MB17, etc.), with actual part numbers. Please use these numbers to find the five or seven-digit item number on the back page of you manual to expedite your order. Hello again, All or most 1/16 RC tanks are powered by two identical 380 motors each driving the left or right gearbox/sprocket/track. Not so for the Tamiya 2A6. One of the 540 motor is for throttle while the other is for turning. That means the more common dual-gearbox-380 -motor setup will not work with the 2A6 DMD/MFU unit which is configured to handle different functions for the two main outputs. The gearbox assembly steps I cited earlier shows that this is an entirely different system with superb engineering.
