1/16 German Convoy Light
I've seen a couple built using LED's on here over the years, but didn't know they made one. I emailed Bill at RCCommand to see if he can get them too.

If Bill can't get them, I know I've heard of Military Might, but has anyone in the States had any experience with them?

Yeah, it was on the left rear corner of the vehicles. HL has a molded one [inaccurately on both sides on the Tiger]. The four lights were to judge your distance from the vehicle in front of you. I forget the distances, but when far away you see one solid light. Because of the spacing in the lights, when closer you see two lights, and at close range you would see all four lights. A way of keeping in line with the convoy and maintaining combat intervals between vehicles

Ernie, Tigers used 2 different convoy lights. Only the very earliest Tigers used the one commonly seen on PZIII, PZIV, the other one was blue in color and tubular. I made my own for Tiger 211 but the aftermarket makes both now. Military Might is good people!
Don't have photos anymore, maybe the fellas can post them.

I didn't know that... I thought I remembered the color blue in there somewhere. Thanks for the info on both. Were the tubular a four square pattern also, or just a blue tubular light?

Hey, thanks HDbeast... I remember when you originally posted that and forgot about those. Yours looks excellent! How hard are they to build? I've never worked with the small brass/PE parts before. Are they glued or soldered together or what, and can you tell me a good source to buy one from?

The one that you originally posted in the eBay auction is made by Imperial. They also have a red option if you want the non-tactical brake lights.

Ernie, how accurate do you want it too look and which style? I made mine using the existing mold with 3 LEDs. I copied Semseyp's design but only did it on the left side.

RE: 1/16 German Convoy Light
Hi
I just made my own with a small blue bulb and some plastic evergreen tube. I cut two lengths of tube for each end, threaded the wires from the bulb through either end and filled them with a small amount of super glue to hold the ends in place and seal the ends as well. Drilled two small hols on the hull to feed the wires through and wired them up.
I had intended to post an article on doing this but just have not had time lately due to work.
Here's a couple of pics of the item.
cheers

Nice one gorehound, you should do a posting on how you did your light. Finding the right LED and in blue is the key to a good looking light.
Thanks for the tip

Thanks for the info Swath & Gorehound. You've both inspired me to try to build one. Can't these be wired to the board since the Tiger doesn't have any tail lights and there is an open slot of the board [RX14 anyway] where the tail lights connect for the other models?

RE: 1/16 German Convoy Light
Hi
I have the one pictured fitted on my Tamiya KT but have not done my HL tanks yet. On the KT I just took a feed from the CN5 connector as it is not used and just pumps out a 7.2v feed. On my HL Jagdpanther I am currently working on I had planned just to wire them directly into the off\on main switch so I knew when the tank had been left on so I no longer drained the batteries.
On the subject of bulbs, it is just a small blue bulb I got from Maplins similar to the ones used in model railways. I did not need any resistors or such this way plus the long torpedo shape was more like what I wanted anyway.
I will try and get a post done on how I did it but it will not be until next week as I am finishing a couple of builds for the IPMS Scottish Championships next weekend so am very short of time - sorry.
cheers

Yes, they can ge their power direct from the board. Make sure you use either a lower voltage source or high capacity LEDs, otherwise they'll blow. In my case, I soldered 3 LEDs together which would lower the voltage across them, too low and they won't light. Also won't work if you share them with red LEDs, only white. Wiring same as Pershing, on RX 13 it was White and Green (I think!) or Orange. One of those combinations ran the machine guns, the other the lights. Pictures and diagrams are on my Build Pages.
