Just Another HE Leopard 2 A6 Rebuild
Hey guys,
I was going through some older posts and came across a couple of really good Leo 2 builds which motivated me to try and get mine underway.
Basically i have attacked this build in two stages. The first stage i finished yesterday and involved gutting the tank of tall the crappy HE electrics, and installing the RX 18.
I've included a couple of shots i took during the 1st stage.
The first one is the before pic, followed by a couple of reference shots of the stock HE setup then the RX 18 installed.
I have since tidied up the wires and installed the internal aerial.
The next stage is the new gearbox and track setup then adding the IR.

Cool H8ted,, more guys are doing this mod and I want to try it someday! You have a picture of the turret open,, it looks like it has a recoil aready how well does that work?

The recoil on my HE LEO 2A5 works quite well. It is a short barrel to start with being a 2A5 not the 2A6 so it looks quite realistic. That is the only thing holding me back from doing the HL swapp right now. I already did my Tamiya gearbox and track conversion wich works almost too perfect so I do want to continue the upgrade. I'll have too get ahold of bubbajoexx to find out how to keep the recoil.

Hi Blitz,
I agree with Panther G, the stock HE recoil isn't too bad at all. I have left it in along with the noisy turret rotation motor for now.
Panther G - thanks for posting up the pics of the track setup - the tamiya parts is the way i wanna go as well.
The way i have wired mine, i have retained the HE recoil on the left-stick-up function. I am looking into adding the IR on that as well.
I gotta say i'm loving the RX18 refined proportional speed and smoother acceleration as you can just touch the right stick and the tank will just creep forward
Probably going to go with ELMOD for the sound eventually though. The HL sounds are just weird on a modern tank IMO.

Take care when you order from Hobbytron. that is where I got my LEO from, the only problem was I ordered the HE Abrams M1A1 and they sent the LEO. which is not that big a deal now, I really like the LEO after I got it, BUT it was not what I ordered. Many places are running out of stock of these tanks because HE wants the dealers to buy entire sea containers of them, not just a couple of hundred units. This information is from a very credible source.

Hello Panther G,
Could you tell me where you sourced the tracks and gerabox from for your track upgrade?
I'm really keen to see use the Tamiya tracks rather than the HL M26 option.
It looks really sweet with the Tamiya tracks - nice work!

The tracks and sprockets I got from Karen at www.aaftankmuseum.com . The gear boxes I used were from my Tamiya Panther G. I have Willy's much improved Impact gear boxes in it now. Karen does also have these gear boxes but It really doesn't matter. To use the Tamiya LEO 2 sprockets you will need to make some type of shaft adapter. I looked at a lot of options but this was the best for my purpose.
