Default To pattoncommander hatch queston????

Hi PC

I have question on the t26e3/m26 the driver and bog hatches have what looks like a troff (semi-round depression)
running backward from the hinge, was this to allow the hatches to swing open and slide back? Also do you
have any pictures that show what air intake bump between the front hatches actually looked like on WWII Pershings?
As usual any help would be greatly appreciated.

second attempt. Site timed out while I was getting photos.

The M-26/45/46 & 47 all used exactly the same hatches for DR-BOG. They do not slide. The slot is for the torsion bar to assist opening that 120+ lb hatch. If a bar breaks, it takes a very strong man to open it ...from outside. Inside,, forget it! The hatch has a hook that engages a flange on the outer rim of the hull and is released by a spring loaded handle on the lower inside of the hatch. (TC hatch likewise). The small box at the back of the hatch is a fire extinguisher release and the handle should be painted red.

The blower housing can be found in variation, depending on where the tank was made. Some very square, some rounded off, some semi rounded face, the first 2oo had a smaller housing. The HL Pershing is pretty accurate other than the auxilliary periscopes that should not be there. This is a Korean War Pershing and only has the periscopes in the hatches.

Negative. Evelyn was the 34 element, platoon sgt 3d platoon. Hit a mine, then the damned fool tried to drive clear and found another one. Took most of the afternoon to get that mess untangled after engineers swept & cleared the area. He could not sit for a while after our CO "councelled" him. My 46 was 12, Charlott. Unit was Tk Co 31 st Inf Regt, 7th ID....later changed to Co E 2nd MTB 40th Armor.

Are you going to make your own decals? The Israeli Sherman looks great!

Lots of info on Korea; so was your unit a descendant of the 40th Tank Battalion which served with 7th Armored Division in WW2?

As far as I can find, Tank Co 31st Inf Regt was formerly the 73d Tk Bn, 7th ID....under the Regimental system an Inf Regt had one company of tanks (4 platoons = 3 x 5 and 2 HQ tanks = 22 tanks) and also a platoon of M-45s...Pershings with 105 as close inf support (=assault guns.) We were supportng 31st Inf Regt..in 1956, the Army went Pentomic and we had one platoon taken away and we were redesignated Co E 2 Med Tk Bn, 40th Armor and shipped north with the rest of the battalion.

I don't know how to make decals..Georg Eyermann is making me some. He does a great job and furnishes top quality decals.

No problem Gary, was put on to 4 very good books on Isreali Shermans which, with spending some time on the I-net at Israel armor museum, got about what I needed. Man, there were so many variations of the Shermans in Israel. Seems there weren't any two alike.
