Daryl,
This is probably the most complete and comprehensive site about DAK, their uniforms, equipment, vehicle markings, personnel, formations, and weapons, it also includes a lot of information on Allied equipment and troops as well. I think you will find answers to just about any question you have or information you need regarding the campaign in North Africa.

http://www.afrikakorps.org

There are navigation bars across the top and down the left side of the web page - about 1/3 of the way down are buttons for photo collections of Tigers in Pz Abt 501, and 504, plus buttons for just about all the others vehicles used in the campaign. There is also private collections of photographs and a page dedicated to color photos

This site is a HUGE resource so enjoy!

Tiger's were not part of the DAK and they did not have the palm.

The PZIVs in the 5th and 8th Panzer Regiments were assigned to the 4th Company in the 1st battalions and 8 Kp. in the II Abt. As such you will almost always see them with turret numbers beginning with 4 and 8. DAK tanks could have had the Palm on all 4 sides of the tank as you'll see in the Afrika Korps website. Also check out their excellent forum.

The first F2s or Specials as the Brits termed them arrived in Nord Afrika in mid-'42 if memory serves.

wow.. thanks guys... finally was able to read the content of the site 3 minutes ago... awhile ago i was at work so i wasnt able to check the content proprly...
now one more question...
on this site http://www.afrikakorps.org/sPA501.htm 131 tiger tank numbers were big.. and with white paint only.. but on the revived 131 and n this particular section http://www.afrikakorps.org/sPA504.htm the 1st company tank theur number n their turrets were small and painted in red...
was thinking the small red numbers where the latest paint or the otherway around?

thanks
daryl

Those are 2 different Tiger tanks. All of the 501 Tigers in Tunisia were the initial production versions with many detail differences from regular production tanks which include the 504 Tanks.

The Turret Numbers of the 1 Kp. of the 501st were white outline. The 2 Kp. were white outline with black in the center and they also put the number on the rear bin on at least some tanks.

The 504ths 131 Tiger is the one at Bovington. It's been said these numbers were originally red but others now say black.

The 501st took delivery of their Tigers between August and December '42. The 11 Tiger tanks of the 504th were delivered to the unit on 28 February '43.
