This is not related to RC, but to "real" tanks.
I heard that there is some research about replacing tracks by just wheels in future tanks design. Maybe due to the fact that tracks wear out quickly during combat missions. Those wheels should withstand combat punishment and pressure due to tank weight.
Anyone knows something about this?

The trend is now on lightweight vehicles that are air transportable. No so much for traction etc but for speedy airlift. Armies are gearing up for local wars like the ones we are engaged in now, instead of the full blow world wars we have fought. This means getting some light wight firepower there quick and send the heavy stuff later. 6 and 8 wheeled vehicles are going to be the norm.

Wheeled vehicles are cheaper to build and maintain so a lot of goverments are looking at them as an alternative to tracked tanks. Also the technology has come a long way since WWI and now wheeled vehicles can go where tanks can't.

With the advent of faster, slealthier and better anti-balistic counter measures (including robotic vehicles) there just is not much need for the tracked heavy vehicle in modern battles.
The desire for fast in-and-out scenarios calls for lighter, faster and more manueverable vehicles.
When a simple IED or RPG can KO millions of dollars worth of a vehicle, new methods are developed.

Like some have stated above, the day of the tank is going to become a very limited fighting vehicle. If I was a foot soldier I would still like having one or two of them along side me in battle. They are a mobil big gun with some heavy machine gun fire to boot, but are also a big target. The world of warfare today is not what it was 50 years ago.The tanks are not going to go out and slug it out with each other like in the past, they will not survive long enough to do so.Todays war when it comes to heavy equipment is going to depend on who owns the air...........
They just as well paint all their tanks "bright red" as there is no such thing as hidding a tank this day and age unless you keep it in a cave or bury it underground and don't bring it out in the open...........
But then if you do that what good are they.?? In the past in a lot of ways night-time was your friend..........Now it is easyer
to spot your enemy at night than it is in the day time, and the same goes for tanks. With todays aircraft and guided missels and bombs a tank is going to survive untill the first aircraft flies over it and takes it out.Don't know how many of you go on youtube and watch some of the actual footage of todays weapons at work knocking out the enemy, but it is amazzing how effective some of these weapons are at night.Depending on who and where you are fighting will determine how good any particular military vehicle is going to be.
