Default Updated Panzer IV after many battles at Danville

I thought some might find this interesting, these are pics today of my Panzer IV after several battle days at Danville.

you can see the effects of the damage from colliding with the terrain and the effects of the dust on the tracks, suspension and tank. the front has taken the brunt of abuse! some parts have fallen off such as the "C" shackles and the bracket for the jack is loose. I figure this tank has about 21 days total actual time on their battlefield and so far has been my best performing tank with the least amount of maintenance. It is a great kit!

Pretty funny Will! Tony's looks about the same. Side hull tow shackle extensions didn't stand a chance.

I have a set of Impact tracks just like yours on my PzIII. But, I couldn't seem to blacken them very well. How did you do yours?

for my metal tracks i weather them using Micro Engineering Rail weathering solution. Its a bluish color liquid that darkens the metal and that stuff is awesome! you can find it at: modeltrainstuff.com
you don't need to paint the track or anything, just clean them with mild soap and water, let air dry for a day, then dip the tracks in the solution until the desired color is wanted.
hope this helps.

Default Time for maintenance!

Well, after this last battle day weekend, the ol' Panzer IV let me know it was time for some serious maintenance on the drive train. the gearboxes were constantly stripping a different gear and after 2 iterations of that, i decided it was time to replace them all, a complete overhaul. So after 3+ years of near constant battling with very little maintenance, the time has come for some depot level repairs.

I started removing all parts necessary to get to the gearboxes and removed them and removed the motors. The gearboxes were pretty dirty and will get cleaned and will source new gears from the original gear boxes. I cleaned out the engine bay, and soldered on the motor leads to the new motors. One thing i noticed is that the metal track is starting to show some serious wear. the inner most chevron on the track is all but completely worn away when compared to new track. Off to go do some more cleaning!

Manchu- If you were to build another Panzer IV, would you do anything different? Would you stay with the plastic kit tracks? And what hop-up parts would you recommend?

Thank-you

After building and running this tank for so long and mainly IR battling, i would definitely do:
Impact Metal Tracks - the kit plastic tracks are fine, with the P4 the metal tracks are so light, there is little additional strain on the gearboxes
gearbox grease shield
Deans connecters for the motors, DMD, and battery
Impact TUs with ball bearings for shaft supports and Tamiya gears - this reduces noise as the impact gears are noisy.
velcro to secure the MF/DMD, speaker, and receiver
blue gears in the turret and elevation units - replaces the stock clutch gears
Schumo extended leaf springs - a must to replace the stock ones.
metal elevation arm - more durable over the plastic kit one
optional:
metal return rollers
This kit is such a great runner, there isn't much you have to do to make it better, but you can strengthen some stock components. i hope this helps.

Are the new gearboxes Tamiya or Impact?

'Schumo extended leaf springs - a must to replace the stock ones.'

The Schumo springs are gone, no longer available. The maker shut the doors, as of a month ago.

Your First Shirt is going to have your oh-my-yes for such a grubby engine bay.

The gearbox is Impact, but the shaft holes were drilled larger to support a ball bearing at the end of the shafts. (more pics coming) the actual gears are a mix of stock tamiya and impact. I had some longer shafts made, which you will see more clearly in the pics i will take later.

that is a shame about the extended leaf springs, the stock ones are too short and will come out from the suspension. it happened to me at Danville twice before i changed them out.

According to the oh-so-wise Daryl Turner, he used flat spring steel and cut his own leaf springs for his PIV.
Though, I dunno where he got it in small quantities.
But I could find carbon strip.

Default gearbox overhaul

I have cleaned the gearboxes and to my dismay discovered a bad bearing, which no doubt led to the gear getting damaged. Also I took some pics of the modified impact gearbox with the holes for the shafts drilled out and bearings mounted. All the impact shafts have been replaced also with either tamiya shafts or shafts made by Daryl. If i had to do this over again; i would have drilled the holes for the bearings larger and inserted a brass sleeve for the bearings to sit in, as i think the thin steel walls of the impact gear box tends to cut into the bearings causing them to fail, especially in the right gear box, as that gear box tends to have the most problems. For some reason the left gearbox has held up much better with fewer bearings failing and stripped gears. Either way, both gear boxes are getting new bearings and gears.

Default almost done

inspecting the shafts I noticed a bad one, it was replaced and all the new tamiya gears, shafts, bearings and new speed 400 motors are assembled. I tend to think that adding bearings on the shafts seemed to have been an improvement over the stock impacts boxes. these gear boxes should hopefully last another 5 years!
I also added a pic of the left track to show the wear on that track as well.
I am going to work on the front tow shackles and see about improving the mounting so they will not be as easily broken off. More pics to follow.
