Will have to decide! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2175433 or maybe something like this with Zimm http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2175434 |
Looks cool Will, you gonna go with the steel wheels on the first positons?
|
Ah, the suitcase of goodness. :)
|
No steel wheels, its going to be the L48 not the L70 gun. Already have the shorter barrel and muzzle brake for it.
|
Nice score!
I'm with you... the L48 is starting to look better and better to me. Plus it's easier on the battlefield items too, huh. Jeff |

build pics will be coming, Already getting a sleeve made for the smaller barrel and getting primer on some parts now.
|
Awesome, did you make the shorter barrel?
|
No, i had an extra Tamiya panzer IV barrel and muzzle brake. but the the L70 barrel has a greater diameter than the L48 and to convert will require a sleeve.

Hi,
Really nice detail photos! Thank you for the tip for the L48 barrel and muzzle brake (one metal barrel plus the RC B Parts, need 2 B Parts plastic trees to make one muzzle brake). AAF Museum has the parts, just checked and see the parts list below, for anyone else interested. Think I will keep the L70 gun though and center up two return rollers and delete the 4th rollers, because the late Lang's only had 3 return rollers on each side. Thus, I can then eliminate having to do Zimmerit and have an Ardennes Offensive Lang in ambush camouflage. Another question, are the Tamiya Pz4J metal idlers similar or look close enough to the Lang's plastic idlers? I included the Tamiya Pz4 idler parts set in the parts list below, A & B wheel set, axle shafts bag, bushing bag and idler assembly screws, in case they might work? Should have my kit Friday, hoorah! Dang it guys! I might have to get it after seeing all of this.
http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/hu...y-emoticon.gif The sliding/pivoting armor cover for the hull MG is a nice touch! Jeff |
Will, what exhaust did they do on this kit? If anyone is looking to do a late 3 return roller chassis you may also want to change exhaust from the large single muffler to the dual.

the exhaust is the same as the panzer IV. what is cool, is the fire extinguisher is the on/off switch.

Good news, the rear idler will take bearings. While it is plastic, i think it will work well even with metal tracks.

Does it come with those bearings or did you have to get them separately?
|
I had the bearings, the kit comes with bushings. those are the bearings that fit the sherman, i dont have the size off the top of my head.

Well, the rear hull plate is just about done, the zimmerit is on it, stock bolts replaced with hex head bolts, tow hitch drilled out and pin installed. the muffler is not glued in place as it will need to get painted and weathered separately. Currently working on applying zimm to the front glacis plate.

Real nice Will! Nice job on the zim and not getting lazy on us and using the supplied sheets. Always admired your zim skills.
Trying to have her battle ready for the Sept. event? |
the goal is to have it ready for September! but there is a lot of area left to zimm! And the gun mantlet is off at Daryl's getting worked to accept the short L48 barrel. Waiting on the Speed 400 motors to come in, convert all connections to Deans, and mount metal tracks. I will do a list of all mods soon.

i think they are going to hold up, you can't get super tight tension on the panzer IV chassis which shouldn't put a lot of strain on them and with bearings mounted they spin very easily, and finally the metal Panzer IV tracks aren't heavy. My bet is they will hold up fine.

Thank you very much for doing this thread. I'll be getting the summer bonus check soon and I'm really trying to get one of these. I'm watching very closely and taking notes. I'm hoping you'll test both plastic and metal tracks and give your observations of the differences in performance, maybe even with video. Still a ways to go to get to that point, eh?
Is it OK if I call you Will? You can call me Gary or Max or even Will, as that's one of my nicknames, being the first four letters of my last name. I'm looking forward to photos of that on/off switch. Sounds pretty cool. And is there an option for a variant without the zim? |

Some work was done on the lower hull, the zimmerit is looking pretty good, just need to the weather to cooperate and get some more primer on the suspension parts.
Gary, there are other version you can do without the zimmerit, this is going to be an earlier version with the shorter 75mm L48 gun built before AUG 44. if you are wanting to build the version with the long barrel L70 gun you can easily build it without the zimmerit. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2175913http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2175914http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2175915 |
Thank you. I'm planning an out-of-the-box-build, with whatever upgrades (like the bearings) that will improve performance and/or durability while still staying a primarily stock tank. I'll probably run it on a 6 channel radio, possibly the TGY i6, mainly because I don't have a four channel radio. Of course, I'm doing a lot of planning for a guy that still hasn't nailed down the funding.
