RE: sexton

You WANT the ones shown, or the NEW ones? I ask because the new ones actually take up less space, and the originals are only 280's - and anything larger won't fit unless you find specific short-can 300+ motors (I tried that too) Unless you can snag a pack from one of the stored 'collectors' copies, you'll probably be SOL, and if you do get 'offers', they may want as much as DMD's anyway. Not to mention the gears are the poor Tamiya 'pot-metal' ones, and rarely stood up to use over the 3+ decades that its been out. The 'used' gearboxes often had the optional gears missing - you got either a clutched 1:100 ratio with a central gear-shaft, or a separate-drive setup with two outer gears on a 1:200 ratio (making the clutch pointless) I can post pics of the RT-1601 manual showing this if you like. As one who HAD the RT-1601 kit (it was NEVER listed as the 56001) I can say its a poor choice over the new gearboxes and the 56014 suspension w/ bearings. Even the HL metal boxes would be better (not to mention CHEAPER) and a HL electronics system could supply more functionality too: traverse (limited but a Sexton did have SOME traverse) and elevation as well as engine noise. Just my two hundredth-loons. |

Just my two hundredth-loons. and all of them are of no use in this unit as I want to run gear reduction motors longetudenaly with 90 degree of sets to make even more space for the electronics for the gun IE elevater 17 degree right left and the recoil unit as well as sound and smoke as all my tamiyas are equiped with hl smoke units |

BubbaJoeXX:
How about the new HL Stug gearboxes? Anyone got a set to measure for Bubba? I'm pretty sure the old Sherman gearbox unit sat as high as the new DMD's. Anyone got one handy to check it? Only thing I can think of is hacking a Leopard/Gepard gearbox to make it thinner, and doing the 380 reduction-drive mod as was mentioned in the following thread: [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7990106/tm.htm]Are Tamiya old clutch drive gearboxes worth upgrading?[/link] I have at least one spare I can look at for hackability (if I can dig out the box) ... and a Sherman chassis I can measure. Want me to look, take some pics, and measure it up for the possible hack? |

Bubba:
That 540 powered one is tall, yes. Too wide 'cause it was designed for the King Tiger, 5604/56004 I believe. Going from memory, if the 540 gearbox is too tall (yes I know its too wide) you're going to be SOL on the RT1601 boxes too, they are even taller. Let me dig out the Leopard boxes tomorrow and the sherman, and I can take some measurements. |

BubbaJoeXX:
Look to be standard Tamiya DMD gearboxes, the ones on the right with the tab in the opening seem to be Type Two gearboxes (first black-cover'd ones) I blew the pics up, could see that annoying plastic gear (someone have the repair/replacement gear packet #?) They should fit fine inside a Sherman (and motors sit even lower with the 3:1 reductions) You can apparently adjust the ratio on the new boxes ( on the left) manually by removing the cases and adjusting the spacers on the gear-shafts, or so I think I remember reading on ArmorHut a while back. You may still want some 2:1 reducers on 'em... I gotta salvage more soda bottles to make covers for my Type 1's w/ their now-rare HPC gear-sets. Even have a Wroe reduction assy laying about I think. |

Bubba:
I searched under 'tamtoy', and not even google found anything. I even searched eBay UK for gearboxes in General, and only found the regular HL metal boxes and a set of Tamiya Pershing ones, nothing like yours. Those look customised... thicker metal walls... |
