World models 80 inch p51 engine advice
G'day fellas,
I ordered a world models 80 inch p51 "ridge runner" mustang.
I was looking at using aOS fs200s ($540)or a saito fa180. ($603)
I am leaning towards the Saito, it appears to be better quality and is $63 (Australian) dearer, so no big deal.
Has anyone else tried either of these in a 80inch Mustang?
Your opinion would be appreciated.

the four banger has been lauded as the scale sound, well, it sounds like someone breaking wind continously, there are plenty of cheap petrols out there, do some research, same some money, and go the petrol route, but, to answer your question, the OS is am gutless lump, the saito is much better, but if you are going to four banger it, there is only 1, the laser 180

Hi Mark welcome to RCU. I cant answer your question but noticed your from Victoria and a big P-51 Mustang fan. Here is a Pic of a P-51 I have nearly finished but have put it aside to focus on a 96 inch P-40 kittyhawk. Where abouts in Victoria are you based?? Cheers Trent.

Mark, if you can stretch your budget you wouldn't be disappointed with the sound & performance of the saito 200Ti (twin inline ) downside is fuel price & engine cost but if your going for the wow !! factor
you couldn't beat it.
I have just maidened my 82'' ESM Hawker Hurricane AUW 20lb, it sounds awesome !! unfortunately I cocked up the landing but suffered very little damage luckily.

Alanc, I googled laser engines and found their site. I can't find them in any websites here in Oz so they would probably be an import only option, then spares could be an issue. But I will look into it.
Trent, yes I'm from Vic, Croydon nth to be precise. I love your planes, I see in the background you have the relics of past projects. You must have been flying for a while.
PSJDBF, I didn't think about that one, just had a look now it comes in at $1053 and is 51oz which is 20 oz more than the Saito 180. I'm not sure if it will fit in the cowl either. The Saito 220a is $855 so that is a serious option too. Just had a look at the videos, very impressive. Is the 200TI
a bugger to tune?
When I collect the model I'll know how much room there is to play with.
If the end decision makes it a lot dearer, then it will just take longer.
Ultimately the plane needs to perform, look and sound nice, that's the priority.

The 200Ti has a single carb so is no different to tuning your average single cylinder four stroke, has less vibration and less likely to have a dead stick with the two cylinders.
The Hurricane cowl is very small & narrow so I wouldn't think you would have to many dramas getting it in the P51, actually the 200Ti use to come in a packaged deal with the
Hanger 9 150 sized P51.

I would go with one of the less expensive gas/petro engines out there like the DLE30. I had this plane and a small gas engine with rear induction / carb and a pitts style muffler is perfect. The fuel cost is much less, and you don't need a hot shot to start it. You will also turn a larger more realistic size prop. Tank location will not be an issue either with the gas engine. It also benefits from the added weight up front, as it tends to be a little tail heavy.

I have the Saito 36 in my Hanger 9 P51 and it's great! I think it's about the same motor as teh 180, but gas. It has plenty of power and I can fly for over 30 minutes
Runs soooo smooth too. It's a little pricey, but not as much mess as glow and gas is much cheaper.

I also recommend the dle30 engine. I recently saw an H9 large scale mustang (frankie version) fly with this engine and it flew this giant scale mustang very well. It easily handled that mustang, so I'm sure it will fly the world GS mustang also. I have the world GS mustang and while it is strrong enough to handle the power of the dle55 it doesn't need it. The 30 with say an 18-10 or 17-10 or 12 prop would easily fly it.

The 55 is over-kill IMO. You don't need the power, weight, or extra stress on those gear. The 30 will fit much nicer and be all you need. It will fly longer on the same size tank, as well.

i saw your picture very nice. what size size of engine that you are using? do you think dle30 will be enough power for Speed flying?

Don't like the rail mounts on the MT35. I think you have overwhelming recommendations and a great track record with DLE. The 30 is all you need, as has been reported. I think your retailer is pushing what he sells. Go with the DLE and you will not be sorry.

Right now I am flying my world gs mustang with a super tiger 2300 with a 17-8 scimitar prop. I am a super tiger fanatic and have learened how to tune them - with this engine the gs takes off a little slowly but in the air the engine unloads and after one circuit the mustang FLIES!! So I like this engine setup.
I have flown this aplane for a couple of years like this and its a lot of fun to fly. I have the early version without flaps but it slows down nicely for landing.
I was told of a walbro carburetor that runs glow fuel with no changes - this came from RCIgnition/Ralph Cunningham. He made me an adaptor to mount this wt499 carb on the 2300, and with this carb the engine runs just as good as it does with the original carb- which is GREAT!.
I am remounting the 2300 inverted with the wt499 carb just to see how it does in the air. I'm just about done with this so I will be flying it soon - the only thing I need to finish this is to get the wrap around pitts from JTEC modified so it fits inside the cowl without hitting the firewall too much.
Anyway as far as yours goes the reason I recommended the dle30 is it is a nice small package that is already set up for you to run. And from how I saw the dle30 fly the H9 I believe this is the way to go in the future. The only thing about the dle30 I'm not sure of is whether you can get wrap around muffler that will fit inside the gs mustang cowl But if you are willing to work with JTEC you might get a muffler custom made by them that will fit like that.

I fly my mustangs fast - my version of scale flying is full throttle with an engine that is at the high end of the recommended range for the airframe, and I fly full throttle. So those who believe in proportional scale speed would probably think my mustangs fly too fast. So I think you and I like to fly about the same speeds.
That being said the H9 mustang with the dle30 flew fairly fast, but it had a 20-8 zinger prop. I would put an 18-10 prop on it and it will fly agressively then - just the way I like. The owner said he was going to go to the 18-10 since at least two of us suggested he try it.

I ended up buying a dle 30 too.
I fitted it inverted, however the standard muffler didn't fit in the cowl, so I was looking at what pitts mufflers fitted.
They were all $100 or more and didn't change the sound level much, so I ended up putting in a canister.
I had to tilt the motor so the exhaust header would fit in, which means the cyl head sticks out of the bottom to the side a little.
But it shouldn't look too bad, the exhaust pipe comes out of the chin block.
I still have to fit the throttle/ choke links/ servo, petrol tank, so a little way off being airborne yet.

By the way, I was expecting mine to be way nose heavy as I added the canister.
I have just masking taped things in the proposed places and checked the balance.
Well bugger me it was nearly perfect!! That was a big surprise.

1. Does the canister give off much heat? with the rear part of the canister inside the plane will that heat up this area much?
2. How much did the canister cost, and how much does it reduce the noise compared to the stock muffler? Who makes it?

Waht prop are you thinking of using? I took the following data from the dle30 threads for props I thought might be in the general size for this plane:
