*** Warbirds Over Texas 2011. RCU Onsite Coverage ***
Warbirds Over Texas 2011will be kicking off this Friday and will go until Sunday, June 10-12. I will be hitting the road tomorrow to head down to the event and will be covering it for RCU. This is a brand new event with this being the first event. However, event organizer Terry Farmerhas been working hard on this event and has it to the point where we were definitely interested in covering event. Pre-registration has him with close to 30 pilots and more are expected to show up. One notable plane flying is the B-26 "Flak Bait" owned by Brian O'Meara. The plane was brought to the USlast year and was planned to fly at Warbirds Over the Rockies. Mechanical problems unfortunately kept it from making it in the air. Brian has since had Evan Quiros working on the plane and good sources tell me that it's ready to fly.Dino DiGorgio from MeisterScale will be attending the event and will be flying the plane. Rest assured I will post video when they get this plane in the air.
Anyway, this will be the coverage thread for this event. I'll be posting pictures and some video each night here so please make sure you check back each day to see what's going t at Warbirds Over Texas. Also, anybody else attending the event please feel free to post pictures here as well. The more the merrier in my opinion. And finally, and questions or discussions about the event can also be here in this thread.
Terry has been working really hard on this event and I'm really looking forward to seeing it. It promosis to bea fantastic event and should be fun to cover!!!It's also nice havingan event in my backyard for a change, so Ican actual drive my own car to the event!!!!!
Please stay tuned for coverage of Warbirds Over Texas

The crew from North Dallas R/C really put in the over time the facility has never looked better. It looks like we are going to be in great shape for weather winds out of the south right down the runway all 3 days. Many of the pilots started filtering in today and spent the afternoon breaking in the air space. Dieno even took Gary’s Meister Corsair up for a spin.

OK, day 1 of Warbirds Over Texas is in the books and I must say that I am pleasantly surprised. Most first year events start out slow, but WOTX had a pretty decent showing today. Day 1 had 47 pilots signed in and on the grounds. Considering it is a Friday and the winds were up a bit this morning I consider these numbers to be pretty good. Like I said, the winds were up this morning around 20 mph. This didn't keep the pilots grounded though. There were plenty of birds in the air.
One flight of note was the public debut of Brian O'Meara's "Flak Bait" B-26. It's been a bit of a bumpy road for Brian to get this bird airborne, but it was all worth it as this one one showpiece of a warbird!!!!
With day 1 down I can't wait to get back out to the field tomorrow for day 2 of WOTX!!!! I have no doubt it's going to be a great day of flying tomorrow.
Here are pictures from Day 1 of Warbirds Over Texas. I hope you enjoy them

Day 2 of Warbirds Over Texas is in the books, and I must say it was quite a day. The skies stayed full of warbirds for most of the day. I had a hard time keeping up for awhile!!!
2 sad bits today. Brian O'Meara lost his F-86 Sabre jet (sorry, I missed the crash). The fireball below is the result. Evan Quiros lost his Dornier 335 to a crash as well. I do have video of that crash. If I don't get the video here in this thread it will be in the full coverage when it posts later on.

Thanks for the great coverage Ken! We hope that all of the folks who came out to the inaugural Warbirds Over Texas had a good time this weekend at the North Dallas RC Club. I met a lot of wonderful people, saw some awesome flying and a lot of amazing airplanes! A lot of planning went into the event, and a dedicated team of volunteers has made this event possible.
I am in love with the Moki radials ... several were flown on a Wildcat (Butch O'Hare's scheme ... brilliant work on the weathering), and F4U-5N Corsair nightfighter and on a Stearman. They sound totally awesome and realistic.
We had a huge raffle thanks to our sponsors, and lots of pilots walked away very happy. Terry also procured some fabulous mahogony trophy planes for the winners of WW-I, WW-II, Postwar, Jet, Helicopter, Bomber, Multi-engine and Pilot's Choice awards.
Tomorrow wraps up the show, and we wish all of our visitors and helpers many, many thanks for attending, and hope you have a safe trip home!

well, i will tell you why my corsair annie mo doesnt have a pilot. she is at 85lbs. i have been playing with the cg and the pilot is behind the cg. she has 5 flights and the maiden was just over a week ago. not to mention the ama weight waiver and inspection process. so in due time, i will put my pilot back in. either way, it is a toy airplane. barry

Having just read this post, the lossof the F-86 leaves a pain in my heart. My son and I were there andsaw it fly a successful flight yesterday (Saturday) around noon.Weleft shortly thereafter very impressed with the turnout at the show. This was the first time I've seen and RCturbine flyand had my mouth hanging open practically the whole flight! I guess he crashed later that day.
Anyway, the F-86 is by far my absolute favorite plane of all time. I've yet to see a full scale of it fly, I have seen a Mig-17 though.

I don't think its a toy when you need a ama weight waiver and inspection process. I myself fly
scale(ish) replicas. definatly not a toy(s). around 20lbs is my limit I put on myself.

At that weight it is not a toy!......
Nice looking machine, would you please post some of the specs on the plane.
Thanks

rick, she is a bahs/xxl corsair. vogelsang has them in stock. this one was built by graham buchanan of tiger models. it was his personal model. he never flew her and i bought her from graham this year. she has a moki 250 for power. she now has 5 flights. after the first flight, i moved the cg forward a little. she is a solid model. she lands smooth. soon, the pilot will ride in her. i was concerned about the weight, but it only seems to make her fly smoother in the wind. landing is a non issue since i moved the cg forward. barry
