[QUOTE=ram3500-RCU;12190952]Good info Astro. Here is a picture of the one I will be working on. It has been glassed back together but I will still be adding more reinforcement before beginning the surface detail. The graphics will be a challenge. It was built in the UK. I'm hoping I don't have to airbrush the tornado.
Awesome that you have KT2 Gary! Please don't be too harsh on the guy who repaired it this far..... You should have all the paint masks for the tornado. Several layers... Still gonna be tough for sure. The waste gate/real exhaust for the mock area was really tough to repair, it was metal and it got pretty twisted. Looking forward to seeing this bad boy back together! Here it is on my first flight with it :-) If you need pics to figure out nomenclature and panel lines, let me know. FYI to everyone, the nose game off on a belly landing because one gear got stuck up.

Graham had a spare wastegate that he made when he built the model and was nice enough to send it to me. So we have the proper part to restore that area. And yep, the Tornado is gonna need an airbrush repair. The good news is that the masks are fantastic and involve very little free hand work. Can't wait to see her restored to her former glory !!

It is a special passion of mine to do restorations like this. In my early years in RC, when we were raising 7 kids, money was short and having 4 boys who got into working out, we went through pallets of chicken breasts and that powder stuff. I took in tons of broken airplanes to fix or restore after my friends had 'accidents'. The word was, oh, don't worry, Gary can fix it. many were planes I had built in the first place. I was able to keep my own stuff in the air on the meager funds this generated . This was pre-ARF and you just couldn't go to the hobby shop and buy a new airplane to fly the next day. I have done a lot of restorations and always it was the goal to make the repairs invisible. They were. They had to be if I wanted to fly. Bottom line, I welcome the challenge.

On another note, while discussing these needed repairs, I would like to put this in perspective. There are hundreds of these planes out there. A small number have been involved in problems like we have discussed. In normal conditions, the air frame is fine as designed. CARF does their due diligence in R&D. Having said that, personally, I have really good days and not so good days at the field. All to often, I realize this is going to be a not so good day a few minutes too late. On those landings, I am always glad I took the extra time to reinforce areas that are known to be suspect. CARF does a great job on 95% of plane. If I can go that extra 5% and make it better, why not. These planes are still at the top of the list on quality, appearance, consistency of fit even for replacement parts, flying characteristics, and the completeness of the plane as regards usable hardware and such for the basic air frame. They don't do accessorizing, and I have concluded that this is their business model. They stick to what makes them money, so they can keep doing it.Please do CARF. We got this.

Mike, your repair work looks just fine from what I see. I'm sure she will not have the same problem again. Gotta love that CF. If I can get my hands on those paint masks, it will be much easier. I'll work on that. I think I will need to put about twenty flights on her to insure all is well. Don't you think?

All the necessary paint masks are with KT2. Mike S. had already gotten them from Nigel at Flightline Graphics. They have index marks that line up. I studied them and the process thoroughly and I don't think it will be as hard as one might think. BTW..Flightline Graphics have the most complete nomenclature sets I have ever seen, with very detailed placement guide, unlike some of the other companies I have used.

Thank you Mike. Best of show (although it was a first for us) was pretty easy I thought. Dom does a very impressive job with the display of VF-17 history and memorabilia, and then I was able to hand the transmitter to onlookers so they could 'fire' the guns. A very big hit at things like this. Also, everything worked perfectly. Cowl flaps, electric folding wings, electric canopy, and lights.

Gary,
Congrats on winning the hardware!!!
As promised, here are the internal pics of the reinforcements I did on the P-47. I will post them in the P-47 thread too and will try and keep my progress posted over there in order to not muddy up this thread with P-47 stuff any more!

As for your work, it looks great. Simple, light (although it IS well in front of the CG so I don't worry about that in this case), and looks to be very strong. You should have no problems with those less than perfect landings. Hope you don't have any though.

Ok, this canopy has been kicking my butt. However, I have never lost a battle on one of these and this was no exception.
The Corsair canopy is challenging as it is, and all the more so when you power it. I had some problems getting this one to close tightly as it must.
I had to cut the front frame loose from the slider and re-bolt it moving it forward. It had slid back a bit while gluing. I also made a new piece out of aluminum to work as a guide to line the two sections up as they come together. For this I added many more stainless steel bolts. Then I had to preposition the fixed section just a bit. Just about everything, it seemed, needed a little tweaking.
For those waiting on their power units, I wanted to work through this before turning them loose. I'm including more bolt sets and the piece of aluminum cut to the basic shape. The builder will need to curl it in after installed as shown it the pictures. i did this by using a small set of pliers and bending it down in very small increments. It did not kink doing it this way. Makes a great guide. The bolts are 2-56 stainless steel Phillips, and they are an exact match to the ones molded into the frame.
You will see wood wedges between the front rails and the fuselage sides. These were on the full scale so that the rails were parallel.
