Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Been awhile since I have seen this method of cutting parts, but times have changed. This is an older kit, but is the newer kits laser cut?
He has been working on the stab and tail flight control surfaces, so there are some parts looking like they belong to an airplane now.
I will keep everyone posted.
looking really nice.
I know what you're saying with the sheeting. I just look at my Hangar 9 and the sheeting brakes.
At least you are able to fiberglass it yet and make it strong. I would have to take all the monokote off
and start from scratch. Luckily it's not in a structurally important area where my sheeting has cracked
in 2 spots. I was able to CA it from the inside and the monokote does not show it from the outside.
So, I think it will be ok, I hope.

Back in the 70's when I was a young lad building control line and entering my earlier RC years we would build with wood glues. It took forever to build due to having to wait for the glue to dry, so we had time for mini-bikes and baseball too. After awhile we would glue some more parts together and go play again. It was some time later that I was introduced to CA. Since then I have met other long time builders who only use CA for tacking parts prior to using wood glues for primary structures.
Well RPRCBuilder is one of the remaining builders who still believe in wood glue over CA.
It is a pleasure watching him work. I envy his skill and talent for craftsmanship.
The kit I have was laser cut!! The parts would fall out with not much push. Just looking at RPRCBuilder work shop he is what I call a Master Builder!!! I still use wood glue on all my build. I take CA to tack a part in place, but wood glue make the bond. I know now days people don't have the time to build, but to sit back and watch a Master Builder take a box full of wood parts and plans, turn it into a work of art.
Yes please keep the pictures coming on his build. But the best thing, your son get to see him work!!!

Thanks!!!
I had the same thing on my Hangar 9 Spit!! I have the same set-up on my Hangar 9 Spit, like you have. Just wait until you start her up. You are going to enjoy it. On my maiden flight, I fill her tank with 30% heli-mix fuel ( this fuel make a lot of smoke ), and it was a blast to see smoke going over the wings. One draw back, your plane will be a mess at the end of a flying day, but, that's how war bird should look!!! Right???
Come back with your flight report when you fly her. She is a keeper!!

Ditto. Keep the build pics coming. I always love to follow a build done by fellow
modelers that have lots of experience.
Sonny,
There is still a lot to be done on the aircraft.
The flight report will have to wait until March or April when the snow is gone.
The fingers don't want to work the transmitter gimbals well at -14c
and I haven't seen a Spitfire on skis yet.
Dare I try.
I opened up a can of worms trying to install the Topflite cockpit into my Hangar 9 Spit.
The side panels are way too high and the instrument panel is too large.
This will need a bit of modifying
Will see how it goes.

Please take you time on the flight report!! I flew my T-Rex 700 helicopter last year in the snow and a 5 min flight was not fun!!! You are so right, the fingers do not last long!! I think I will look on the web today, to see if I can find a picture of a full scale Spitfire on skis!!! Last year someone post a video on you-tube of a H9 Blue Nose P-51 on skis and it flew great!!

I just finished converting my ESM Spitfire from a OS 120 AX to a DLE 20. The conversion was surprisingly easy as the DLE 20 fit in the same mount and as the 120 AX. Even more amazing, the engine bolt holes lined up perfectly. All I had to do was install a new tank, run a new throttle line, and install the ignition next to the tank. I also used a JTec wrap around muffler.

WARBIRDRCER did you think that this would ever get this big?. I have not been on the RCU web site for awhile because of building

This is great! This shows how small our world really is, and we all share and support our common intrest.

Your wing skins are there to hold the shape. When you fiberglass it will give it the strength you want. Use .75 oz or lighter cloth throughout. Keep the tail light as possible. Maybe even go back and see if you can sand down another 1/4 ounce out of the tail feathers. You could add a second layer over the key high stress areas like the landing gear area, top an bottom of wings.
Good luck.

Jet22b, yes fiberglass the bird.

I was in the shop today looking at the wing and glass is the way to go!! I knew about the tail and not to have to much weight back there, by other build thread here on RCU!! I am going with .75 oz cloth or lighter if I can find it. The skin sheeting is just to thin for my liking. I still have a lot of sanding to do on the tail. Now the only draw back is to find a local hobby shop that sell the good stuff to finish a plane. I have two local shop that I go to and the only paint they sell is for RC cars!!!
Thank you again for your in-put. I will post pictures of my work!!!

I am not having much luck lately with my Spitfires. I tried to maiden my kit built TF MK IX in early October but the new gas Saito FG-20 seized solid during the last chance, full throttle check before launch. Got the engine back from HH, the problem was a faulty connecting rod that seized to the crank. It was not my fault according to HH, there was a bad batch of connecting rods that got installed in some of the FG-20’s. The weather did not co-operate this past weekend to complete the maiden. Hopefully next weekend will be ideal for the maiden, if not I will have to wait until spring.

In the mean time, I was trying to complete the assembly of my ESM 50cc Spitfire, this ARF has been a complete nightmare since the start of assembly. The only item left to install is the engine, but the engine mount cylinder/tube is way too large to install in the fuselage access hole. It’s oversized by 1.7mm or 3/32”. I have a replacement engine mount on order, just waiting for delivery.

Greetings from Virginia Beach USA. I just noticed one of your spitfires is "GZ-?". Well, the restored spitfire GZ-? resides here in Va. Beach at the Military Aviation Museum's vast collection. It flies regularly during their May Airshow. It's quite interesting that you fly that RC spit over there in Israel. The airframe used to restore GZ-? was salvaged from a school yard in Israel. Attached are a couple of pictures of GZ-?. Enjoy.

Ok Spitty fans-
Just an update on the Ziroli Spitfires.
Both Spits have 8 flights on them and they are in storage for the winter here in Indiana as the snow will fly soon.
So far the engine-to-airframe combination is very good. I don't think I would go any smaller or bigger.
Our biggest problem has not been overheating but getting enough air in and out of the fus for the carb to breathe.
The solution has been to use the actual full scale carb intake for air in and the radiator for air out.
They are amazing in the air and the ground handling is very good as well.
Like all spits, keep the tail light and you be rewarded with a wonderful flying aircraft.
Cheers,
Chuck
smart move on the air intake. I have a flying buddy that recommended that on one of my .46 planes a few years back and it worked on that plane.
Beautiful pair of Spitfires!
Sorry you have to hangar them already.
