Default TF Giant Corsair scale mods.

I just acquired a TF Giant Scale Corsair and decide to make some scale changes. One of my pet peeves is the stab shape and fin shape. Don't know why they don't airfoil these structures when they designed the kit. I will first see if I can use the existing structure and modify it or probably easier just building new structures. Here are some pics of the flat stab. Follow along.
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred,

I have plans for a set of scale tail feathers for the TFGS Corsair. Send me an email and I will send you the PDF files if you are interested. I will be looking forward to seeing the completed Corsair.

Default RE: TF Giant Corsair scale mods.

I have decided to build a complete new stab. I started with a 3/32 core sheet. Then cut a tapered trailing edge and used some cut down aileron stock for the leading edge. new ribs were glued in and then sanded a slight airfoil into them. The bottom side will be a mirror image of the top. I used the special scratch builders formula on the stab. TLAR translated That looks about right LOL. Once the sheeting is on I will have a stab that is about 1 1/8 in. at the root tapered to about 1/2 in. at the tip.

Hi Casey,
I've found through the years of building planes that if it looks right it will work. LOL I've been building these for over 50 years and found everything works out in the end. Just completed constructing the opposite side of the stab, hinge blocks glued in and ready for sheeting. Ran out of CA. To be continued. LOL
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred

I did about the same thing to mine about 5 years back it was my first atempt at mods but starting with the kit after I got it framed I just sanded one side till it looked right, then made 3 templets root mid and last rib and sanded the rest to match.
The bird no has about 40 flight on it and all is good.

Will be watching your build with intrest

Cheers Bob T

Sheeting is completed. Stab is rough sanded needs some filling. There is a definite airfoil now and looks much better. The fin is the next makeover.

Hi Casey,
Thanks for the comments and yes it's Solatex. That stuff is great to work with. Sticks well and shrinks nice and tight.
Thanks,
Fred

Hey Dave,
Great hearing from you. I never left the Island [ Rhode Island] LOL. I love the Byron Corsair. I think I have owned 8 of them at one time or another and always regret selling them. My buddy Tony gave me this TF Corsair in payment for building him a Yellow Spitfire. I will be doing a build on that in the near future. I will be making some changes on this to make it a little more scale looking. Some of my planned changes are scaling the stab and fin, maybe doing a sliding canopy, changing the flap actuation from pins to a slider plate, retract doors, scale exhaust stacks. And the list goes on. Depends on how ambitious I get. LOL Anyway good hearing from you and say Hi to Debbie
Thanks,
Fred

Thanks Dave, I appreciate it.

I stripped the sheeting off the fin in preparation for airfoiling it. Got some dings and dents in the trailing edge post which will be filled later. Cut two tapered trailing edge fillers from 1/4 in. square stock. Then glued on some 1/8 th in. filler stock on the existing ribs. This will be trimmed and sanded to make the airfoil ribs.

OK the fin is sanded to shape and sheeted. It looks a lot better and took about 1/2 hr. of work.

Hi Casey, Glad you are paying attention. You are going to find as I go about make changes that the scale TLAR formula will be in use quite a lot.
Thanks,
Fred

OK , I have to remove the existing stab structure that was built like a tank. Looks like 3/8ths plywood that was epoxied and screwed into the fuse. This was adding a tremendous amount of weight in the back end that translates to lbs. of lead in the nose. A lose lose proposition.
The new stab is so much lighter. To remove the structure I cut the whole top of the stab section where the rudder sits. This is not really structural but mostly filler sheets. Then unscrewed the ply plate and popped it up from the fuse. Before I removed any structures I extended two reference lines from the existing stab plate. This gives me the Zero degree incidence angles. I blocked up the fuse until I was Zero at the reference lines. Then sanded in a new stab saddle to match the stab. Sanded the saddle until I was Zero degrees on my Incidence meter. Now my stab is Zero Zero to the front wing. All should be good. I will finalize everything before I glue it on by mounting the wing . Checking the wing incidence and Zeroing the stab to the wing.

If you look closely the first picture of my incidence meter reads - 2 degrees, I had to sand the back end of the saddle down and brought it to Zero degrees in the second pic. Remember the original saddle was completely flat, I had to sand in an airfoil.

I guess I'll start modifying the flaps next. This is the stock setup in the up and down position. I plan on putting some filler pieces between the flaps to close up the space. Radius the leading edge, put a slider flap actuated between the root flaps, and installing a cap to cover the top hinge line.

Cut the inboard flap off. I will install the slider plate in this one. First pic is the way the flap looked originally. I then radiused the top of the flap section getting rid of the straight leading edge.
I placed some 64th ply sheeting over the hinge line temporarily to show what the new hinge and flap assemblies look like. I think it's quite an improvement.

Slider plate fabricated and glued into inboard flap. Inboard flap glued back in and filler pieces installed to close up space between flap. Hinge gap filler is placed temp. Quite a difference from the kit built setup and the modified version. Left wing flap setup is next.
