Make sure any of the original glue scabs etc. are removed and you have a nice clean cavity! Assemble the insert minus the rail and without actually glueing the pieces yet. drop it in the cavity and use the inner rib of the insert as a guide and mark the rib it's up against because all of that must come out. Made your cuts a little bigger than your marks show or you'll be trimming them again
More of the rib at the bottom that you just cut will have to be cut or the retract will not drop all the way in! After you have your cuts done drop the insert in set the rail on the notches and then put the retract in! If you need to cut stuff you'll know what to cut!
The next steps are in my post with the pics
Piece of cake!

Hey All,
Got all the backorders of eagletree temperature goodies so am ready to break-in the FG60!
Gonna make the dihedral rib, joiner etc tomorrow!
Been busy with the Giant Ryan STA which I installed the eagletree guardian in!
Had three flights with it and I gotta say... take-offs and landings with her were no-brainers
I will definitely put one in the FW !

Century Jet now offers a drop in gear for the FW-190. It comes with a scissor link for support so it should be a huge upgrade over the Robart unit.

it is good to see that there are some more retract options for this model. i have video of my Robarts failing from the slightest side loading during roll out at the end of a landing. it is really quite disappointing . i am working on editing the video and uploading it to my you tube channel.
when it is up i will post it here.

If I were you and the Sierra were in stock and you don't have the drama seen in the last 12 months on simply ordering from Sierra I would order Sierra vs Century.
I have a lot of Century retracts and if you have a problem with the stock set up you will pay for anything that goes wrong with the retracts even normal expectation relating to a gear failure.

I am done dealing with Darrell at Sierra. He makes great gear but the customer support has been awful. I would rather give other companies my money.

here we are,it is winter and i finally managed to upload and edit the 12 min video down to 6 min. just forward through the video and you will see just how little side loading it takes to bend the pins in the robart retracts. i remember reading about it when i first bought my model. i decided to go with the robart air retracts because i knew someone who had 2 sets of robart electric units for the 190 that the electronics failed before he even got off the ground . but i really couldn't believe the tales of these retracts taking no side loading until it happened to me. i think i had plenty of roll out on this landing the tail wheel was down and i felt comfortable with turning and keeping a little speed in the grass to keep her rolling along but really?? you can see that it took nothing to bend the left retract pin. i dunno guys, maybe century jet? deal with darrell and buy sierras?i'm alright with darrell i have had good luck with his retracts in my ESM ME109E. just keep it short and to the point with him.
has this problem with the robarts been fixed by robart? i did the drill rod/bit mod to mine and have had no issues since. anyways all in all i really love this model.

I talked to Robart a few days ago and they said that they are working the issue. They are trying to harden the pins to get the desired strength. Until then, the only real fix is to drill out the pins and weld in some hardened ones, not easy for most people.

You will notice that Sierra like the full scale has a diagonal strut to reinforce the gear against side loads.
For what ever reason, Robart doesn't have this. There in is the real cause of the problem.

the sierra retracts are beautiful. the man does nice work but they just weren't in the budget when i built my model. i hope others will beware of the problems with the robarts.

At least Robart is admitting there is a problem now. I talked to them at the WRAM show last year and they said they knew nothing about a problem with the pins bending.

The Century Jet units also have the scissor brace for side loads.

That's total crap denying this issue.
I made them aware of this issue almost three years ago.
They were at that time very helpful with me in doing the repair
and mod to make use of both pins for bearing the loads. Still flying this plane to date with minimal problems from the gear.

See my posts #1847 and 1849 on this page from 2013.

I don't think anyone is using the Century Jet retracts yet. Bruce just put them on his website last week. I worked with him over the last few months and he finally came up with a design. He said they will be a drop in fit and will have the scissor link for support. They sound very promising and like a huge upgrade over the Robarts. I ordered mine this week. Hopefully I get them shortly.

I am yet to finish my build and fly mine, I have the wing finished with Robarts installed, with all the problems being stated with Robarts I'm tempted to take a loss and get a pair of the Century Retracts since they are direct bolt in. Since I won't be flying mine any time soon, I will look forward to find out how the Century Jet gear works out before I pull the trigger and dump the Robarts and get Century.

From a previous post:

(QUOTE)"I talked to Robart a few days ago and they said that they are working the issue. They are trying to harden the pins to get the desired strength. Until then, the only real fix is to drill out the pins and weld in some hardened ones, not easy for most people"(QUOTE)

It would seem the right thing for Robarts to do considering they are aware of the Issue and are trying to rectify it; is that when they find a solution, to help all those out that have the Retracts with the messed up pins. I have a Great Planes Giant Citabria, and the original batch had soft Landing gear that easily bent, Great Planes acknowledged the problem and shipped out free of charge a new and improved replacement set, Robarts could learn from that, not sure if they care or would bother.
