Orthobird,
I have this plane. I fiberglassed it and painted it with automotive paint. I didn't add any details other then the stock cockpit kit. I have a DLE 55 in it with a 22x10 prop. I think the power is perfect. Scale speed at 3/4 throttle. fast at full throttle. I don't think either of the engines you have will be enough to fly this plane nor will you be happy with it.

Definitely the G62 over the engines you mentioned.
Well I haven't posted much about this plane for a while, the project was finished this past July and I had to much fun flying it!
The plane weights just over 29lbs, power is 3W70 turning a Menz 22X10 propeller. I fly at an altitude around a mile and 29+ lbs is no big deal with this bird, on take off it is ready to fly at about 400 ft, landing full flaps is my favorite moment!
Hope to find someone eventually with a good camera and skills to take pictures on the P51 flying.

so you all suggest, when i build her, to reinforce the landing gear area with fiberglass tape and epoxy? has any used any carbon fiber tubes or rods to reinforce the wings and the fuselage?

I applied carbon fiber cloth inside the fuselage behind the firewall, as for the wing I took the sheeting off all around where the gear mount and glued a 1/4 ply-wood plate in the area covering 3 ribs.
I used 6" aluminum tape, similar to Flite-Metal on the fiber-glassed fuselage, the wing is painted. All markings are painted including the kill marks.

one more question, and i will refrain: has anyone here have any experience with durant direct drive for the ailerons, elevators, or rudder on this airplane?

thank you all very much

Thanks Chad,
I hope to make it next year with my Sea Fury. I do miss my Spitfire (sold it to a good home), plan to get eventually another one together, I'm thinking of the 1/4 scale Mick Reeve version which I have the wood kit for.
Thank you Brian can't go wrong with the TF line but I can't resist to give them a face lift!

Bruno: What ratio of epoxy/microballon mixture do you use for your blending work? Noticed that early in the build you mentioned that a couple of times.

thanks, Brian

For what it's worth, I have a G-62 in my TF P-40. I started with a 22x10 Xoar. I later tried a 20x10 Xoar and it ran about 20 mph faster and tached 75-7800. The factory paperwork said it had a max ground rpm of 10,000 so it's okay. It really howls with the 20x10!!!

Brian,
I don't use a specific ratio, it all depends on what you are doing with it. For example, when I am dealing with a substantial area to fill I add more micro-balloon to keep the material light and less if I use it to do some finishing work. A good medium is to have a mixture that is just thick enough so it doesn't run or fold on his own weight. Once dry and sanded I apply some automotive finishing putty to seal the micro-balloon area. By the way use finishing epoxy for the mixture.

Bruno your going to have one beautiful plane when you get it done.

With all the great rivet work your doing why didn't you do the dzus fasteners on your fairings and cowling, Just curious.

i would like for it to be a speed demon of sorts.
both engines will spin an 18 x 8 prop at about 7300 rpm or so.
Ortho, I put a G-38 in my first P-51 top flite kit and it barely flew. It got it off the ground after about a 600 foot take off roll. It was not fun. thought I had learned my lesson, I put a US 41 in the arf version and about the same. the plane is very stable and still flew underpowered but it was pretty boring, could not do much but fly around in large circles.

I don't think so but a 70cc has gone in one of them. There has been one put in a Aeroworks tho.

That's a lot of motor. A g62 is plenty for this plane. I flew mine with a g45 and it was fine. Not super fast but plenty scale.

the length of the G62 is 162.5 mm from the back of the crankcase to the prop hub. the DA 85 is 148.5 mm
the height of the G62 from the bottom of the backplate to the top of the sparkplug boot is 185 mm. the DA 85 is 198 mm.
the width is 140 for the G62 and 102.5 for the DA 85

I finally purchased a pilot for the Mustang, 1/5 scale Bob Sweeney from Best Pilot. Sadly I will have to cut Mr Sweeney's legs and glue them back but spaced further away from each other to fit in the cockpit. I removed as well the molded stick handle from the right hand and will reshape it to fit the cockpit stick. Painting will be next!

Well I will continue this with a rebuilt! Lil' Margaret ended crashing after a mid-air with another TF 1/5 P51 that sadly ended with the same fate.
Lil' Margaret's life was too short so I will give her another shot.
Started by removing everything in the way to inspect the fuselage, will need new formers, front side frames, new nose, etc...
As the wing goes few new ribs and sheeting, and yes I will do the rivets again!

All the guts now removed so the front canopy top deck.
Rear side frames looks okay in the back however one side separated from the formers.
I will start by removing the side balsa sheeting, clean and epoxy back the side frames.
I was fortunate to receive a retired airframe (well used) from a friend (thanks Clark!), it will allow me to use some of the parts or draw new ones if not clean from oil.
Lets get going!
