RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Just flew my P51 today with the revolution engine lots of power. I took off with no expo and it was very very touchy, I will have to change that. I used the rec CG and that worked out great. When I landed ( very nice soft landing ) the left gear and all wood came out so I will rebuild the gear support and fiberglass both sides, should only take a few hours. When I looked at the old wood gear mount it did not seem to have much glue in the required areas, not very strong at all.
How much expo are you guys using on the control surfaces??

I have recieved my revolution r50, good to know it works out great. I am wating on the scale exhaust from keleco. I will be using the Vanessa cg rig for my 33% cap, this plane, futana and my GP hawk. Heck I could even balance a full size airplane if I had strong enough string! Thanks for the tip.

I also used the Vanessa off this forum before I flew mine and it was perfect. I would run three or more tanks through the Revolution before flight, after each tank I had to re adjust and remember to run on the richer side for additional cooling.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I have a U.S 41 in my ARF and at the moment about to break it in using a TopFlite 18x8 like they say in the manual. After the break in stage I'm going to use a 20x8 but I am not sure which is the best wood blade to use..... was thinking of the Zinger. Also in the zinger range I see 2 types of zinger, which is the better 20x8 zinger. Cheers.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Raptor,
Had two of these in TFGS P-51s.. Zinger and Top Flite props will work, but the best props I found for this engine is an APC 18/12, and a Menz 20/8.....The 41 is somewhat on the low power side, so plane weight would have to be considered in any choice....If your plane is over 18#, the 18/8 may have trouble getting it off the ground, that is the size prop we run on 26cc engines...

The manual for the U.S 41 suggest the 18x8 for breaking in. What about pro zinger props, are they any good.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
zinger props are just OK ...
try a good quality prop like Xoar, Bolly, Menz, The APC props are good also
I really like carbon fiber but one nose over on cement and they are done... $60 bucks
I had a 20/10 zinger it worked.. now I'm running Xoar 20/10(very nice finish!) this is on my GS zero with a zdz 40 it's 18.5 pounds
I could feel and see the differance in power... I ran a 18/10 once it was strange motor really reved up but felt slow
Desert Aircraft sell these good props and there just a few bucks more than the zingers
I'm with gary.. I'm sure your p-51 will weight more than 20 pounds you better go with the 18/12 or 20/8 or 20/10
with the 18/12 on a us 41 I wouldn't try to point the nose straight up and climb out it may stall
good luck!!
I'll be doing the maiden soon on mine DA 50 with a xoar 20x10

DA-50 @ 21 lbs. I started with a 20x12 3-blade Mejzlik. Broke it on the first flight. Now using a wood 2-blade Menz 20x12 until we get everything dialed in. Flies fine with this one. I have another Mejzlik on order for use with the Tru-Turn spinner......after I get my comfort level up !!

I need to pull the cowl off anyway, so I'd be glad to get some images at the same time (over the next couple of days).

Jack,
Sorry this took so long to get the pics. Been a busy week or so. But, here they are. Hope they're not too late. I just made a small shelf of aircraft ply that is wire tied to the top two standoffs, foam, and there you have it !! I've only got five flights on her. Weather has been bad, but tomorrow looks promising. Can't wait.

Jack,
Forgot to mention that the ingition battery is mounted just behind the firewall. The ignition switch and charge port are mounted in the cowl, low on the starboard side. When running the engine without the cowl, I just plug in a spare switch and I'm good to go for tuning and test.

Will measure it later and let you know. I lost the BBD today on its sixth flight. The wing snapped on landing. Fuse, engine, etc., OK, but the wing is a total loss. It snapped on the starboard side just past where the wing joiner board ended. I beefed up the mounting for the retracts and told everyone that if it broke, it was going to be the whole wing.......well........will post pics later.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Here's a picture of the sad event. It felt like I ran out of elevator coming in for the landing. Airspeed was too fast if anything. Both main struts were damaged. I'm getting out of the big warbird game and will part-out undamaged parts to help fund the next project (probably a 2 meter Edge). The fuse is fine. Canopy and cowl have some scrapes, but can be easily corrected. The scale exhaust is undamaged and up for sale as is the 5" polished, TruTurn spinner + 20x12 Mejzlik prop (see post on 4/14). Rear Robart retract, air pressure guages (Robart and Sierra), Air control valve, fill valve, and tank; pilot. Servos, receiver, and DA-50 will be used on the next plane. I would consider selling the DA-50, but only as a package deal with the Keleo exhaust, spinner, and prop. I also have the original Top Flite spinner and fixed gear, original tires, and the recommended tires for the Robarts (DuBro 500TLs). If anyone needs anything else, let me know.
Thanks,
Nick

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
I would have been up for the DA and Scale exhaust but I just got mine in the mail.
I just crashed my funtana 100 today! Engine boged down on a low hover and if just tiped over!
The engine separated completely from the fuse. It is crazy how a 5 foot slow drop can just wreck and entire plane sometimes...
DA and other makes prop extension for those that want one.......
Can't use a scale exhaust though, it will mess that up. great for wraparounds though....
check it out!

Well it's finally done...
I looked back to a post of mine around this time last year when I just got it... "should have it done in a few weeks"
that was a good one...lol
In my defense I did build a bunch of planes and repairs all summer...
It has a DA 50 for power, areo tech wheels, robart retracts main and tail wheel, two 6v 2400 mh nimh for RX, one 4.8 2400 on ignition, Full cockpit from dynamic balsa, full pilot, areo tech guns and exhaust stacks, futaba PCM rx, all digital futaba servos
It was alot of work for a ARF but I think it looks great.. I hope it flys well... it's a bit chubby 24.5 pounds
but from what I've read it should be fine at that weight.. I just need to fire it up this weekend and make sure it runs..
Here's a few pics
I thank the guys that started this post... I used it as my bible to build this plane
I'll give a report when I take her up
Thanks for looking
