Thanks for the add! Have always really liked this airplane and finally put one together for warbird racing. Flies like a dream!

You can't have too many Airacobra's!!! FMS P-39 and an ESM P-39. Both are electric powered. The ESM is powered with a Tacon 160 motor with a YEP 120HV esc running on 12s 5000's. 16-10 Master Airscrew 3 blade
. 3200watts, 69 amps with 9300 rpm's Sierra Giant scale retracts Test flight was today. Flies great!

What is the overall weight of the ESM after the build with batteries on or off board?
I am finally getting ready to put my Peppino P-39 back on the table and complete the motor/speed controller and battery install.

This thread seems to kind of died. I have about 35 flights on my ROC Hobbies P-39. It is a cool little plane. The only problem I have had is occasionally one of the main gear does not come down. After I cycle it a few times I get all 3 down. I even bought all new main gear and replaced them, and it still does it once in a while.

Just staged the P-38 at Warbirds Over the West in Phoenix
Im still working out my choice of motor and speed controller but I did a static with the current set up.

P-39 Lawn Dart
So sometime back I posted some pictures of my old red box redesigned scratch built P39, where I did foam core wings and a built up nose to replace the plastic piece. It was done old school with upright 2S - 61 motor (an old re-built HB from back in the day) and with fixed gear.
On a nice sunny day this past summer I took it out for its maiden flight. The flight started out fine until about 20 feet after takeoff when I discovered that I had too much throw and not enough expo dialed in. It was up and down and round and round like crazy and I was always just a fraction of a second behind. So I finally managed to pull the throttle back, gained some measure of control, made an approach to land and tip stalled.
As you can see from the pictures it went in like a lawn dart.
Went from too fast and twitchy, to too slow and tippy. What a day.
Fortunately it rained pretty good the day before and the field was soft earth as it did its lawn dart thing. Not much damage to the plane fortunately. Had to strip down the motor and clean out all the muck and grass and then re-assemble.I have adjusted the throws down and cranked in more expo. It is ready to go again this summer, so we will see what happens.

Love the Lawn Dart approach - looks like the wingtips never touched the ground
At least yours is attempting to fly, mine is still on static display only pending motor and battery mounting..

I cut the foam cores myself with my home built foam cutting bow and power supply.
Many many many many years ago when I got my first red box kit, I made tracings of the root and tip ribs as templates just in case.........
Over the years I have built a number of P-39s from the tracings but no longer as canopies are hard to find.
If you want info on my foam curing rig or a copy of the rib templates let me know and I will try to post it in this thread.

New scale laser-cut wing. But even though the wing was actually designed for retracts, I have not had time to rework my plug to incorporate a retracting nose-wheel in the scale location (as stated as a goal in a prior post). So, unfortunately have to modify the wing design back to using fixed gear. But, am building the optional split flaps.

Aside from the larger Gold Edition kit, I've seen the older Top Flite P-39 in both red and yellow boxes, and wing area listed on the boxes can be 606 sq in or 650 sq in (span = 60" in both cases). The one set of plans I've seen, though, says wing area is 650 sq in. Were there 2 different versions (sizes) of the earlier kit? If not, what is the wing area?
Also, is there a decent scan of the plans uploaded anywhere so I could have a look at the proportions and see if it's something I'd be interested in building?

I have a Gold Edition for sale on RCG with retracts and all other accessories if interested for . Look it up. The box states that the wing area is 742.8 sq. inches. The wingspan is noted as 63".
