Hi guys, I have safety wired bolts before but these bolts are sunk in the muffler unfortunately.

Wedgelock (also called Nordlock) washers will take care of the muffler-loosening issue. Available from McMaster.

I finally had some time to start on mine, fitted the servos, hooked up ailerons/flaps etc and left to dry. Tailplane's also fitted so then I decided to have a look at what's going to be involved in the cockpit. Once I'd removed the balsa floor I found..... much more space than I thought I'd have!. The pilot's probably going to obscure most of it and it won't be quite full depth but it'll be hard to see!

I did something similar to my P51 using the dBalsa kit, if it turns out like this I'll be happy.....

I think Spit retract dimensions - the greatest secret. e-Flite sent me to Hangar9. Hangar9 said sorry, we do not have information.
Please measure it. I'm looking for electric retracts for my Brian Taylor Spitfire. I will keep secret and will not tell anyone.

2.. 25mm
3.. 33mm
4.. 56mm
5.. The mounting lugs (from centre to centre).. 37mm

First impressions...much better than the 150 Mustang, better build, covering and overall packaging. The eFlite retracts are quality items. More to follow soon!
Scott

How well does that cockpit kit fit. Apart from removing the balsa floor was there much else you needed to do to make it fit?

Yeah there's going to be tons of work to make it even close to looking right. I'd suggest this model is closer to 1/5.5 scale rather than 1/5th scale.

The Mustang is really 1/5 scale and its 89", next to it the Spitfire looks tiny and is probably nearly 1/6 scale.

Zcott

This Spit is 1/5.5 in scale. There has been alot of discussion about that very point over on the RC Groups thread. That is why I was asking about how the cockpit kit fits because it is listed as 1/5 scale. I had also posted a question asking if anyone had used the Tys Aircraft 1/5 cockpit kit made for the Esm model which is true 1/5. One of the guys who has both Spits posted a picture of both fuselages beside each other and the difference was obvious.

Here are 3 aircraft all, are claimed to be 1/5 scale by their manufacturer. There is only one true 1/5 scale among the 3, can you guess which one? The H9 30cc Spitfire, the ESM 50cc Spitfire, or the TF P-51D Mustang?

The ESM Spitfire would be the closest. If it is indeed 89" span as advertised then it is just a hair larger than 1/5 scale. (88.4 would be exact)

Chad, yes the ESM wing span is 89" exactly as advertised, and as you confirmed slightly larger than 1/5 scale.

Great pictures. Where can I get a pilot like that? Thanks Art. Just about to start building mine.

Art; I got the pilot at a LHS five years ago, the only one they had. I've been searching for the same pilot figure ever since, but no luck in finding another one.

Scott Douglas; I don't recognize that brand of engine, what is the cc and who makes it? I have a Saito FG36 that needs a home so it will be fitted into the Spitfire. I will have to modify the hatch so the 6mm space will be hidden, this is due to the cowl not extending back far enough to hide the 6mm gap, not a big deal to accomplish.

That pilot looks to be a Blue Box RAF Pilot. They haven't made them for some time although they do make other RAF Pilots.
Sometimes you can find one on Ebay but they don't come cheap.
