Congrats on your maiden, model looks really nice. Any shots while in the air?
If to much revs, maybe try to make it slightly richer turning H needle.

The only problem is the Biela 22x12 3B "semi-scale" is way to light for my FG90R3.
It runs around 6400 rpm on the ground and greater then 7200 rpm in the air, so I had to throttle down all the time. The engine is still new, so I guess the revs will increase.
The Zero flew like it was in "low gear" all the time so lot of revs and not that much speed. Due to noise regulation I want to stay with a 3 blade (It makes to much noise now anyway)
I am looking for more pitch like 22x14 3 blade. Anyone any experience with this size of prop? What brand?

if you’re getting a new prop try a Biela FW190 3blade....it’s more scale for the zero and it has a wider blade to load up with. I’m running two of them on radials and they work great. One 26x16 on a 160cc and a 25x12 on a 125cc, both 3 blades

Both engines get 5600rpm on the ground with those props

Thank you. I am very happy with the result so far. Somebody made a video with his phone but no pictures. If I richen the H needle, it will runs rough. It is not good for scale, but I am gonna try a Mejzlik or Engel carbon prop. The Biela over revs and makes to much noise. (We have noise regulation)

Thanks for your suggestion! I ordered the FW in the first place but I was recommended to use the WW2 prop. Due to noise restrictions I am scared the FW props are not the quested ones. What is your experience regarding props noise of the FW props?

the noise from my FW props are no different from the scale props. Not sure what the other person could be experiencing

Hi guys,
Today I installed self made scale canopy locking mechanism.
I also glued 950g of lead to the cowl to set CG (150mm) . It looks dry weight 15,5kg for maiden.
Last weekend I went to the airfield for final checks. I had to reposition baffles further back because engine was overheating over 3000 rpm on the ground. I plan maiden flight in 2 weeks, depends on weather.

This is how much dirt is from saito after 2 tanks used on the ground:

Beautiful. The plan suggests C.G. at 145, it will be interesting to see how it flies with CG at 150.

Hi,

I suggest to try a RAMOSER Varioprop adjustable pitch Propeller. On my FG90 I run a 25F 3-blade hub with 21.8“ SG (wide) blades. With cooling fan in my FW190 I get 5700/7000 RPM at 12“ pitch. Without the fan you can expect 14“ pitch same RPM. And the blades are pretty cheap if you like to try other ones...

Regards,
Juergen

I fly mine on 170. The model fly’s great and very neutral. Still a little down elevator required inverted. With the drop tank installed I can fly “knife edge”. 😎 145 is way to conservative in my point of few. I have no lead in the nose.

Thanks Juergen.
I fly the Zero now with the Ramoser 3 blade 25F hub and 22,7 HS blade. After adjusting the pitch to 14,5”, the Zero fly’s phenomenal!! So much more power and speed and efficiency then the Biela. The Saito runs really great with this prop. 5500 on ground and 6900 in air after a long full power pass. The nice thing is I fly now half throttle most of the time and the speed vs RPM of the engine matches perfectly. Although the “high pitch” the Saito pulls the Zero like an animal through big loops.

Thank you very much. This was my first “scale” project and I am very happy with the result. If someone is interested how I made my sliding canopy or LG doors, let me know.
I have mixed My sliding canopy to my flaps. So in take off and landing my canopy is open.
Still have to add guns and maybe NAV lights. Total weight without fuel is 14.1 kilo

What are your carb settings on the Saito?

I thought 5 turns on low needle and 4 turns on the high needle. A little on the rich side both needles as the engine is fairly new. No hiccups during rolling manoeuvres. It runs awesome.

The only thing Is that I find it hard to flip start it.
I haven’t found the sweat spot how to prime the engine. I tried the “choke bar”, pressure the fuel tank, put a vinger on the carb during flipping with mixed results. It cost me at least 20 flips to start it when the engine is cold.
I find the FG60R3 much easier to hand start. Does somebody has the “golden ticket” how to hand start the 90?

If you can reach the carb inlet with your finger:

- ignition OFF, FULL throttle, carb closed to choke: flip the prop 6-8 times to prime.
Primes better with throttle fully open, but ignition has to be off for safety!!!!

- ignition ON, throttle slightly above idle:
engine should start.

I installed a choke on mine: Servo operated lever with a piece of foam to seal the carb inlet.
Makes starting much easier:

- choke closed, full throttle, ignition off: flip 5-7 times
- choke closed, throttle slightly above idle, ignition on: flip till it has first ignition.
- choke open: should start right away

Regards,
Juergen

P.S. Are you member „Didiero“ of german warbirdforum?

Just order a starter cone and insert from Sullivan, attach it to a drill. You don't have to worry about choking it! It makes reference to it in the directions. "choke or use electric start". I've started mine for years this way.

Hello Juergen

Thanks for your suggestion. Basically I did already you’re suggested method regarding the finger on the inlet. The only thing is that I flip to much and the engine maybe gets to much fuel. I will try the 6-8 flip method. Thanks.
yes I am Didiero from the warbird forum. I am just a new member. Unfortunately I am not very good in the German language.

Hello Pete,

I just made a small video so you have an impression how I did make the sliding canopy.
