Gary,
you simply must get a bigger pilot for this wonderful looking Mustang!!!!!!!!

Addmitedly I have not read every line in this thread so he might be on the way?

Congrats anyway on a job well done.

Brad

Brad, yes I plan on getting a larger pilot. this one will be used for static display out side the plane. It is signed by an original Tuskegee Pilot. I would never fly the plane with him in it. Thank you for the complement on my mustang.

Grahm, great looking interior sir.
Started on the pylons and drop tanks. The pylons and drop mechanisms are both from Aero Accessories. The drop tank shells came from Ziroli models.
I first drew the opening on the pylon and then using a cutting tool in my dremel tool carved the opening so that the mechanism would fit tightly at the bottom of the pylon. this can take a while. you wil see my famous popsicle stick sanding tool. works very well. I also cut the small tab off the side of the device so that it would fit in the pylon. I then roughed up the sides of the mechanism with 80 grit and used epoxy to hold it in place. I then got out my side view drawing to see where the hanger point was for the tank it self. I then drew a center line. I drilled holes in the hanger to accomadate the philips head screws supplied with the units. I then drilled holes in the top of the tank for the attachment screws. I then glued in some 1/8" ply to the inside for the screw to hold onto. I then ruffed up the mating surfaces of the two tank halves and glued them together with epoxy. I mounted the hangers on the top of both tanks. I then using Goop glue, attached the servos into the pylons. Here is the finished product. I will finish off the seams, then prime, and using the "T" shirt glue simulate the welds around and accross the tanks. Remember these were throw away items. Do not make them look to good.
Good Day,
Gary Webb

Hello again, still banging away at these drop tanks and pylons. Finished up installing the push-rods for the release mechanisms. using music wire, and installing a Z bend at both ends. trying to save a little weight...LOL
I then taped off the bottom of the tanks around the back bottom seams, and then added light weight body filler. After it set up I sanded it flush with the sides and flange. Now they are ready for priming.
I then made up the pylon hard points with 1/8" aluminum tubing, and 2-56 hex head stainless steel bolts and washers. I was wanting to simulate the rubber bumper pieces at the end of the bolts that rubbed against the tank to keep it from wagging back and forth. While at the LHS, I got an idea of using plastic washers for the bumpers. I drilled out the washers to accommodate the heads of the bolts with a snug fit. I then filled in with CA, and used kicker to set it up. I then threaded another nut down to the head and CA'ed it in place. I figure, once this is painted it will look very convincing. I then drilled 1/8" holes in the pylon where the tube would go through. I then looked at photos to see how long to make the arms. I then cut the tubing to length. Then using my small vice with an anvil on it, flattened on end of each. I then drilled a hole using a #50 drill and tapped it for a 2-56 bolt. I then used a file to round off the end. I installed the bolt and jam nuts. I then installed the tube through one of the holes(front) in the pylon and proceeded to do the same on the other end of the tube. I installed the drop tank into the pylon and bent the tubing into place and adjusted the jam nuts. I then made three more hard point arms glued them all in with thick CA when satisfied with the fit. Painting will commence tomorrow.
Good Day,
Gary Webb

Just an update. I have now finished painting both the pylons and drop tanks. I also painted the four bladed spinner cone Red. tomorrow I will add the graphics and clear the parts. Then i will install the hard points and run the wiring. will have to use a match box for theses due to the 9th channel on my PZAPW11 is only an on/off tpye channel. Will need the match box to set the ATV for the small servos. That 12MZ sure is looking better all the time. LOL
good day,

Well I'm getting down to the wire. Here is the pylon mounted to the wing with the drop tank installed. Installed the graphics on both the pylon and the tank. I drilled a hole through the rib that the landing gear blocks are mounted into(out board rib) and feed the servo wire through under the retract and then out through the slot for the asirline. I then made a new hole in the spar near the rib and ran the servo wire through to the back of the wing, then out through the hole in the top of the wing at the root. I had to cut a 1" by 1.5" hole in the wing skin under the pylon to allow the servo to protrude inside the wing skin. Made sure the push rod was not binding before I glued the pylon in place. Note also the pitot tube is installed.
Next the left wing.
Good Day,
Gary Webb

OK guys, this will be the last installment of my Red Tailed Tuskegee Airmen. Joe Hahn came over today to help me assemble the model for the first time since I started painting it. (Dino you were right. It does take a while to hook all this up. glad I put the retract control system in the wing.) To my amazement, all systems worked flawlessly. HooooooRahhhhhhhh!
Here are a few photos in front of my home. It's about 40 degrees out. Brrrrrrrr.
Will see a lot of you at Toledo. Will be in the Iron-Bay booth. Will be finishing the build on my T-28 very soon now and will provide photos if anyone is interested.
Again this plane was built for the sole purpose of honoring the Tuskegee Airmen, a few in particular with our Ohio chapter of TAI.
Good Day!

Congratulations, Gary. That fighter is absolutely beautiful Inspirational, in fact. Looking forward to seeing your T-28 completed. I started mine last July and set it asided to finish a Ziroli P-47 refurbish job. That has taken alot longer than expected but will soon be completed. Then I will finish my T-28 too. Seems we will be part of a pretty small club of Byron T-28 pilots.

Heck Dino, I thought I might send mine to you to finish...LOL
Yes we are in a very small group. Byron only sold 7 kits before calling it quits. I know Iron-Bay as sold more than that though. The exact amount not for public knowledge, or least I'm not able to say. I am amazed that a lot of guys are not lining up for this one. It is a great kit, and the plane flies great. A fellow had one two years ago at the DOGS show and it really looked great. I had already committed to building the Mustang first. Got my juices going on that one. with in a month or two, my T-28 will be setting on her wheels. Not a lot of work to do to it left. Do some work around the stab, and prime, then lay panel lines and rivets. then add color and markings. Put brakes on this one. want to see the nose bob when I put on the brakes..LOL

You got issues. Nose bob.... I love it. I cant wait to put the lights on mine!
I just finished taking some night shot videos of our lighting system on my H9 C-182.... looks great. The videos are neat. The T-28 will be a great platform for a set! Please share your pics too. Mines built and ready for landing gear.
Let me know if you need a set, we have a dealer account with Robart. See what kind of a price I can get.

Thanks Dino, but being a field rep for john, I have all the parts to finish this bird. It will even have the wheels and brakes they supply. The brakes are from the big F-15. so if they worked to stop a jet, they should do well to slow down the T-28. If not I will change out the system then. Robart is the only one that I know that makes retracts for this plane. Maybe Darrell could make something to fit.
See you soon.

Just got back from Toledo and saw first hand this incredible BEAUTY on display. BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO. Fantastic. Gary, Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you and Joe B. together about the setup for the gear, as I've been talking to him a good deal about his plane and improving it to your specs. Your plane seems an ideal subject for us to work from and I truly regret not getting a chance to talk to you guys together. But, you can be sure I eyeballed it a lot at the show. Fantastic finishing job, as were all the planes on those tables. I'll have to bring something next year after feeling a little left out []. Maybe you and I and Joe can all have a Skype session???

Thank you Mike I really appreciate that. You must agree that this was the year for military aircraft at Toledo. there were very few Aerobatic type aircraft on display to war birds. Did my heart good! Do not get me wrong, the aero-bat planes were fantastic! Was able to spend some time with my good buddy Dick Petitt, of RCR, and met for the first time Dick Waltz. great guy! Both Dicks at RCR are my favorite writers about giant scale!. If you are ever somewhere that Mr. Petitt is, go up to him and get acquainted. He is real good people.
On another note. Greg Hahn, and Dave Johnson was gracious enough to critique both my model and my documentation after the show. They pointed out a few things that could be done quickly and easily to improve my static scores. This is the great part of scale when some of the best in the hobby are willing to share there knowledge and talent with the rest of us who are inspired by their efforts. Thank you both for your time and valuable info. Just to be around these men and watch them fly is very inspiring. I have over the years found most of the top contenders when approached properly, and with respect for their time are willing to help anyone who is entering into scale competition. Any how you all are figuring out that I had a great time this year at Toledo. Dave Platt had a fantastic new scratch built he 219 that as always looked real. He inspires us all. Mike Barbie has a new Waco painted in the same scheme as his last. It was soooooo beautiful. All I can say is that if you missed Toledo this year, you missed one of the finest collection of scale models this modeler has seen in a long time. I think the magazines will be filled with many pages of this event. Joe Boyd had his four bladed prop reduction system, including constant speed prop on display. He looks to be getting closer to a finished product. This will allow a plane the size of my Mustang to be able to fly on a 50 cc engine with a top speed of around 115-120 MPH. Mind boggling. He has flow it on a huge 35# 138" WS model at over 90 MPM. This is a large high winged flat bottomed wing with lots of drag. With a cleaner airfoil he should get a lot more speed.
Keeping my eye on this one.
Talk to you all soon.
Good Day,
Gary Webb

alanjets , keep the instructions handy you might need them. If you go camping in the woods[X(]. I recieved my kit last mounth , The wing tube will not fit and the stab tube is chicken sheeeeeeet . I was aware of this stuff before I bought mine so no big deal. This is a nice foundation for a nice war bird.

Nice, no fantastic looking plane Graham, thank you Carver. By the way, my wing tube did not fit my wings either. Had to have Ray Lablonte to send me another one. It's outside diameter was just to large to fit in the wing tube. All are to long and need to be shortened to fit your particular model. That was minor. My only complaint is that it takes over twenty intense minutes to asemble the model. This is due to the two piece wing. Not only do you have to conect all the wires and air lines to the fuse, but also between the wing panels. I have all the lights, hard points with drop tanks and bombs, not to mention the interconnecting air lines and servo wires. Whew!!
But it's worth it!
Gary
