Matt,

Thanks for trying. Windy day, we were so nervous, I don't think we noticed the windsock. 42lbs of plane didn't seem to mind. Love the hardware in your stable, beautiful work.

Hi Mustang41,

Thanks, that's what I was trying to describe to John. It's strong and extremely light, makes major difference when you put it on the balancer. Where did you get the gas cap fixture? I have been trying to contact the supplier for two years. I ended up using Desert Aircraft type and ground the Logo off. Superb job on your bird, love the exhaust manifolds!

Mustang 41 and others,

If you have not got to the standoffs to the outer doors yet, here is the route I took. The gear location does not quiet line up with the doors. I used piano wire thru 1/4 ply in the door. Used brass tube for bearing surface. as the gear retracts, the stand off slides on the wire. You can tell from the flight pic, It won't come loose.

hello
i think gear installation it's the most difficulty in this kit
gears doors it's a pleasure[>:][>:]
the gas cap is just a resine cast statics piece( like exaust pipe)
i make a silicone mold and the same pieces are on the wings

Hello fellow Comp arf P-51 builders, I have been building one of these beasts down here in Melbourne Australia for 12 months now and have a quetion to all. I cant seem to get the tailwheel doors to open and close as required with the suppied wire system in the instructions. I have used the Robart tail wheel assembly as shown in the instructions.I might be too far along to use a air ram system so I am trying to use the movement of the retract to open and close. Has anyone got suggestions and even better some photos to help. Much appreciated Trent Smith.

Hello Trent,

I tried the wire method, but doors would sag open, etc. I used the method outlined earlier on this thread, which works great. I bought my retract valves, sequencer fromTom Cook, (http://www.jetmodelproducts.com). Shouldn't be too hard to retofit. I located the servos just forward of the instument panel.

I used fuel tubing to push it open, with a collar lock in the center with a kevlar plastic coated string attached to it looped through the strut to pull it closed...seems to work pretty good also...but the pneumatic would probably be the most precise....

In the 2nd photo you can see the tail strut is bent...I have since replaced it with a stronger music wire and it seems a lot better.....

Mustang41...it looks like you made your own robart thicker lever system also maybe? I had to double brace my Robart lever in my Ziroli P51 with carbon fiber because it would always bend...seems to do the trick so far

I could not get my strut door and collars to line up either as Charlie mentioned...the sides and too short...so I replaced the screw eyelet with an L bracket threaded rod, and the L's sit within the hardwood in the strut, free to rotate and slide a hair in and out it needed.....the L is long enough so it won't come all the way out...

Hello guys. thanks for your responses. Chisep51 did you use this particular sequencer for all your gear dorrs as well or just the tail wheel? If just the tail wheel doors which one did you use for the main doors as they close back up after mains are extended prior to landing. This being slightly different to the tail wheel doors. Cheers guysTrent Smith.

Nothing is easy with this plane. I mounted the mains sequencer in the left wing root and the air tank in the right. I'll post pic. when I get home. I used a small air tank for the tailwheel for flight, but will have to enlarge to accommodate the canopy cylinder with its huge appetite.
Matt,
Thanks for your pics. Didn't think about that workaround for the tailwheel. Keeps the weight down and works. Wheel well detail, outstanding! I have learned so much from this thread.

Trent,

I think I bought the sequencer from "Precision Engineering, Canada" I made a rib and pre drilled everything and slid through opening and glued w/hysol.
I threw in a pic of static prop.

Hi Mustang 41

I believe mine was a bit off too, so I took a file to the rod hole bottom just a bit to get it even...I then reinforced both sides with carbon fiber on the inside...I glued my stabs on permanently too.

This picture looks like it's still a hair off though...that could be the angle of the photo etc, or maybe one hold down screw is tighter than the opposite side, or a wire or tubing got snagged underneath on side while assembling at the field...I will have to double check it next time I assemble it again because maybe something has changed???...but I recall it being dead on when I fixed it in the shop.

Either way it still fly's great, cause I flew it that day.....

Hi, I too had issues with the same area, the vertical fin was square with wings but tailplane and cockpit hood was off quite a bit. All fixed with a bit of file and sand. Cheers Trent

Wow, Trent, how'd you get those big pics? You guys have me worried about the horizonal stab. I didn't notice mine being outta square with wing, but will double check when I get it back together. I do wish comp-Arf would go back to the roacel spar and trailing edges, would substantially lighten the airframe.
Can't tell, but are you using only two hinge points on each elevator? If so, I would encourage you to add another, that thing will be heavy and will get a good workout during flight.

Guys, I finished my guns last night, have been putting it off for long time. Will post pic later.

Hi Charlie, The photo is so wide you cant see the 3rd hinge. Would not do two even if instructed to. I dont know how I got the photos so wide?????. Im glad to hear you got your arms (guns) finished last night, no doubt 200-300 bicep curls. Ha Ha. Cheers Trent.

How do you think a Brison 4.2 (I have 2 of them) would fit in the cowl of this plane?

Thanks/Bombcat

Hey bombcat_79

I thought about a 5.8 Brison....carb would stick out...not sure how much smaller the 4.2 is...but here's how it would sorta look

....ended up going with the 3W85 rear carb

Hi

I am going to use a 3w 80, with a home made reduction unit, from a rebuilt Mick Reeves Torquemaster, so I can fly with a 4 blade scale prop from Solo Props. It fits perfectly into the cowl. Nice and clean.

Kind regards

Jan

Hi

Well, I haven't gone so far yet, but I think it might be somethinge about using the intake in the front and direkt the flow over the engine, and maybe use the oil cooler as well, with some air intake channels like on a EDF jet. I am also considering af elektric fan behind the engine..some how I will figure it out eventualy..

Kind regards

Jan,

Don't know if this will help or not, but if you have access to a bandsaw, I cut 2" pink foamand wrapped with 6oz fiberglass cloth, then vacuume bagged. I cut through the centerline and removed foam, then 1" fiberglass tape to join the two halves. It's not pretty, but cools the rear cylinder of my 3w twin 80. You could route it anywhere you want (possibly thru rear firewall directly on cylinder. It hugs top of wing saddle, flattening out to make room for the cockpit tub. The other pics shows how I packed 4 batt. packs behind the firewall under the diverter, then ignigions on top.
ps. I like your engine/reduction drive idea. Should look awesome. I ran a 24X13 solo prop on my first flight.
