RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
My opinion matters little I'm sure but, none the less, I've always thought the fuselage of the CARF Mustang was a bit too rounded giving it something of a soft or pudgy appearance. The full size looks a bit more angular and aggressive to my eye.

As they say (or something similar)
You can please all scale modellers some of the time
And you can please some scale modellers all of the time
But you cannot please all scale modellers all of the time.
All opinions are valid and everyone gets a different pleasure from their creations, and I am sure no one is being overly critical in any way in pointing out scale deviations which, whilst clearly incorrect, do not exactly mean the end result can be mistaken for anything but what they were intended to represent, which is a good thing otherwise if manufacturers like CARF had to create products to satisfy everyone, they would probably decide it was not worth their while! Yes we could build from scratch but not everyone has the skills/time/knowledge and apart from the products from a select band of master builders, most will have similar unintentional deviations as an inevitable result of the building process. Sometimes it is just nice to have the option of going down the ARF route (even if it does not always come cheap). On the plus side, if every product were perfect then there would be no point in such forums to discuss corrections, promote aftermarket products to scale up our models and to show off our efforts

RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
Ed, thinking about your colourscheme, is the decals available from a suplier or did you do the decals yourself. Im thinking of enlarging the set that came with a Tamiya 1/32 Plastic kit at a printshop on watertransfer paper. Dont know if this wil work, but here in R.S.A some model supplies are very hard to get, especially things like scale addons like pilots, scale wheels etc.

Large home-made water slide transfers can be difficult and I have only had luck with making my own smaller ones like nomenclature and cockpit placards. Maybe I did not use the right commercial equipment materials and the inkjet colours did not last, plus you cannot print white lettering!

Brahm... Looking forward to your new build.
Here's a new Supercharged V12 Scale Merlin engine in the works we found. Will give these guys a visit in the next week or so.

That engine will probably be the ultimate solution to what we all crave, price will be through the roof though!

Price of the engine will be about $4-5K. I've spoke to the owner back at Top Gun this year.
Unfortunately there is no release date as of yet. They're trying to sell their radial engines first before launching the "Merlin engine".
It will be a nice engine and well worth it.

I would be surprised if a scale V12 will produce enough power.... but would love to be surprised. They are about 45 minutes from me and going to see about stoppingin to see the radial when down that way.
Kolm is awesome .. especially the twin and triple with the 270deg offset. Have yet to get a price on that one. Have a friend stationed in Germany who is looking into if for me. They are the best offering currently availabe for this plane in a direct drive.

BRAHM, Good luck with your new bird. The mould lines sure look better than previous versions of the kit. A word about the canopy. The canopy pic you referred to was my feeble attempt at building this plane. I too had misgivings about the canopy shape until I found an article, during research which states, "The bubble canopy was introduced to the Mustang beginning with the D-model, greatly improving visibility to the rear. The exact shape of the rear slide canopy bubble varies from plane to plane due to the nature of the manufacturing process. I appreciate people like Tony Howard, Dino, et. al. who create scale accessories for this bird to enhance it's appearance.Charlie

Hi guys,
I have been following this thread for A LONG time..... so I thought you guys mite like something I have been quietly working on.....[8D]
http://youtu.be/_6Xz2KeSzA0
This is my second version for the Kolm and I am very pleased with the performance. Most technical info is listed on the video page, but I am always happy to answer questions.
This power house will be going into my CARF Stang which is already under construction.... My end-target prop will be a 29-30" dia / 26-30 pitch prop, and I hope to have it soon for another test. It might be a lofty goal, but im gonna try to have the plane ready for a test flight by the end of summer.... will see
Thanks for taking a look!
John

Thanks Charlie, yes the moldlines looked better I think, but still required plenty elbow grease!
I am now busy with the canopy latching system, I did find a more sutable canopy at the local hobby shop.

O.K. John, I'am very impressed. Can't wait to see how you cool that beast. Please post build pics. Can't wait to see flight vids. I have not reached the "point of no return" on my engine choice yet.Charlie

Love the engine and pulley mods John.
My only comment is the sound of a twin on this Mustang doesn't do it for me. It deserves a triple so you get the closest firing order and sound to a V12. A triple and your pulley mod and that would swing any prop you want I bet.
Im looking forward to your test flights.

THe Kolm at the 270 optional firing offset is closer to a warbird sound .. the triple .. I agree. We are also working on a PRSU at 1.55 ratio... same type set up. First one is arounda DLE 55 since that is sucha popular engine. Target plane is the Aeroworks P51.
I'm game on one of yours too ...EXCELLENT work.... Kolm triple would be rocking but the twin @ 270 offsetwith a respectible 28 to 29 SOLO prop will be just fine. Are you addressing secondary vibration in the PRSU?

Ooo yes a DLE 55RA with a pulley would be cool! I have a Solo 3 blade prop and 24in blades. I have two sets of scale FW 190 A style blades in 23in as well. That would be sweet in a D9 or the A8. Affordable power and a scale prop.
Im running a DLE 55 RA now in a TF Corsair and its been a great engine so far.
Keep me posted on your pulley kit.

Hello,
Does anyone know of a source for Kolm inline twin or triple engines? I contacted Aircraft Modelers Research (AMR) in Canada and they replied to me and said they are not selling the inline twin or triples and cannot get parts for them.
Thanks,
-Ed B.

Thanks Spit. That is ideal for the wwI types with the narrow cowl and scale big slow 2 blade props. The one we are working on (out of cad and in CNC is uprite engine mounted specifically towards the ww II types. 3oo hour single cog belt and taking in account the primary engine vibration and secondary PRU vibration to the prop. (Same design principles as being used on the full Scale FAA Certified units).
I support anyone working on PRU's as there is a need and many applications that benifit everyone. That Kolm unit is fantastic.... I think they have done a great job and look forward to seeing it in an airframe. THat engine is 3 times more than the others out there. Its a work of art and I have been following them for some time.
Back to the forum topic..... The other unit in the works is around the 3W110 iR2. I plan on using this in the comp P51 with the 28" 4b solo prop. SO, I have a huge interest in what others building this plane are learning and their mods. It's really a builders plane called an 'arf'. The test bed is the DLE 55 because it is a very popular engine and there are so many applications... target prop on the 55 is a 24" solo prop.. although may be at a 22" (4 blade) with target prop rpm on both at 5000 so the pitch/speed numbers work out impressive to a warbird application. The FW 190 TF or the new H9 Corsair are also screaming for a large 3 blade.
I had the cad file attached... but decided not at this point.
Looking forward to this building this plane. Going to get as much as I can through Dino to include the solo prop.

Could somebody please give me the weight of a Sierra tailwheel assembly, have tried to email them but no joy.

RE: FiberClassics P-51 now Comp-ARF P-51
Mine weighed 12.8 oz. (look at top post previous page). I made two bulkhead assemblies one Robart, one Sierra. The Sierra was 3 oz heavier. Please note, I drilled many lightening holes in the Sierra gear to reduce weight. Pic bottom of page 39 of this thread. Charlie
