Peter
Great work on the undercarriage area. Looks like it will be very scale. I have been out of town for the past couple weeks, but now that I am back I can continue on the P-47. Still plenty to do that's for sure. Glassed the flaps, primmed, just need to do a bit of wet sanding and filling where required. I also mounted the contol horn ply to the ailerons. I will be confirming my aileron travel then I will glass them next, prime, sand, and fill where required. Then it will be back to the fuselage to work on the sliding canopy, which will take a bit of thinking, and work to accomplish the scale look. Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming.

Craig.

Craig,
not that scale in fact, just gives it a little detail. Maily did it to strengthen the sheeted area and it does that very well. Bloody expesive stuff though, cost me $21 for 6 packs of the styrene strip. [:@]

Been working on the bottom wing sheeting last 2 days and have that finally completed. Was going to get the ailerons and flaps covered but ran out of time.

some piccies showing the gear areas done in the silver before the yellow goes on. Also shown is the various stages of sheeting the wing. I used magazines and pavers to hold the wing firmly on the jigs.

cheers
Peter

Looking good there Pete.

I'm still painting - got the cowl ready for black chequers, should be interesting. Main colouts on - starting to work out how to do all the insignias, invasion stripes etc, then decals.

Took a few low-res shots before painting tonight, will try to attatch a couple.

Cheers,

Cam

Cam,
that is looking good mate. Is that the 1/7th size jug? sooner you then me on those chequers! Good luck with it!

going to do some more work today on the wing, ailerons, flaps etc. Will then get a fine tip marker pen and mark out the wheel well area, flap & aileron servo bays, ident light locations etc on the bottom sheeting prior to glassing.

the wing does feel quite heavy and it still has the retracts, servos etc to go in so hope it does not blow out too far [:-] - we will see.
cheers

Hi Pete - yeah, it's the smaller one. Big one didn't exist last century when I started it (one of those on again, off again projects). I'm staring down the barrel at 13lb-ish at present, so it can build up pretty quick. I thought 10lb was do-able before I started glassing it. Alot of weight in all the panel-line primer etc. too.

Still, they reckon it can handle that weight o.k. - a buddy here builds them with scale wing section and it's flick-roll city, apparently the TF section is very forgiving by comparison.

Nose weight's the big unknown for now - I've heard some real horror stories there, but I'm really trying to keep all my gear fwd - batts and throttle servo in the cowl etc., so time will tell.

Well, more painting to do.

Cheers,

Cam

btw - wheel wells look GREAT - well done!

Hi Cam,
yikes 13lbs is pretty heavy. I had the TF P40 and it was 10.5lbs so was nice.

Are you sanding down the resin coats between glassing? If you get the technique down pat it can be done very lightly.

I have been working away on the jug most of the day and have shaped the leading edges and blended accordingly. Ailerons and flaps are cut out and just shaping the little fillets on wing trailing edge in flap area.

Will post some pics later. We are off the Nth Stradbroke Is for a week from Fri so probably will not get a lot done between now and then. Beers, fishing and spotting whales with the telescope, might even see the odd "white pointer" too . . . [X(]

cheers

Geeze, tough life for some!

Don't thing the epoxy was the culprit - thinned w. metho' and barely filled the weave. Might need to ditch a few std servos for minis - all std's at present which isn't really req'd these days.

Retracts/scale wheels are killers too (Custom retracts on this one - luvverly1)

Just been staring at a big white cowl.....think I might do some stripes first[&:]

Anyway, will post piccies as things progress - you get some of those big sharks eh....

Cheers,

Cam

yeah well have to have some balance in life and we have been both working flat out last few months so need the break. IT is gorgeous over there and we will do some 4wd along the beach. Last time we were there on the beach a F111 dropped out of the low cloud base and did a run on us at about 200 AGL, must have picked us up on MTI. Very impressive to see - little waggle of the wings as it roared over.

I also thin the resin right down, till it is like water, just enough to fill the weave, once cured hit it with 80 grit to knock off any high sport then some 180, 240. 2nd coat same same but fill in a bit deeper to get a smooth glossy finish - then 80, 180, 240, 600 grit to knock it back to smooth as. Ends up very light.

Ahh Pete Gows gear is nice - I have a set of the originals he based his designs on in my big P51 - about 25 yrs old me thinks.

have fun with that cowl!

hmm I will have to see what noahs are about hehe

cheers

More completed here on my P-47. Flaps and ailerons are glassed, primed, sanded and primed again. At this point there are only a few area's that will need some attention. That will be done later. I have also applied another coat of primer to the tail area and it looks good. Still once again some minor areas that will require touching up. I also found that some of my balsa joints are slightly visible, but with panel lines, rivets, paint and other markings, these area's will not be visible. Also with a touch of weathering it should look pretty good. I can not believe how much deflection can be achieved with the flaps. I dont have any linkages set up yet but you could definately drop them down. I need to pick up my retracts and start on the mounting, which will also include cutting out the wheel well area. I am also planing on utilizing the door covers that will completely cover the wheels. I just have not figured out how to do that yet. Anyways, here are a couple of pics. I will post more as progress continues.

Not to sure of engine yet. I have a G-38 sitting here and I know it would pull it. However nose weight may be required. Might go for a G-45, or G-62. That will be determined later, depending on funds avail. LOL
Speaking of vents, do you know what the vents are, forward of the cockpit, I believe there are three on each side which run vertical. I want to replicate these however finding a good picture detailing these has been difficult. Maybe someone else reading this thread could shead some light on this for me.

Those vents you're referring too aren't symmetrical - at least not on the P47D-22-RE I'm modelling. Drawings show 3 on one side all same, but a smaller one in the centre with a hatch on other. I'll try to photograph mine tonight - I'm at work - as I've replicated these.

Best drawings I've seen were old aeromodeller ones, some errors on colours but great on detail. I think I may have spied them pinned up on Peter's wall in one of his posted photos. Let me know if you can't locate and I'll try to email you a copy.

As for what they do, no idea!

Cheers, Cam

O.k., I couldn't get a good photo of the vents - I'll try to attatch the documentation instead. Photo should make the cowl detail a bit clearer though. Here goes:-

Cam,
looks like you have been busy. What are these vent things that were mentioned by Criag?

Ok my progress. Flaps & ailerons have been cut away now. Ailerons have been blended into the wing profile and the LHS one has had it's leading edge radiised and hinges fitted. Small bit of binding present so just need to relieve the holes on the middle hinge a small amount.

I have fitted 3 hinges in scale locations. I will then be making a aileron shrouds on the wing trailing edges.

Some pics attached.

cheers
Peter

Hi Pete,

I believe he's referring to those 3 vents in a vertical row either side of the front fuz. - skinny elongated holes.

Interesting watching your build, it's almost identical construction to the smaller one. When you add the aileron shrouds the wing TE is curved if done scalish - you'll need to thin/sand the outer aileron LE a bit to make it all fit. I did this, plus on the rudder/elev. as well. Seems to look and work o.k.

After your response, I put my painted airframe with all control surfaces on the scales, including wing servos, and it's currently 6lb 8oz. so really not bad. Most of the rest is all the hardware that goes in. Forums reckon 13lb still flies fine on this model, but I might do a diet on some bits and pieces yet. Bigger concern is how the ST75 will cope, but again other forums are encouraging on my fatty...

Keep up the good work,

Cam

Hi Cam,
ahh will go have a look at my docs to see about those vents.

Not a lot of diff in the small kits to the big one, they just upscale em.

Got the other aileron done now, fitted the hinges and have also glued on the wingtip blocks. Will shape those later. The cable protuding is for the wingtip nav lights.

Watch your paint and you may sneak in under 12lb which will make it a nice bird to fly.

Yup figured I would need to do a bit more sanding to get them to fit inside the shrounds but I am only using 1 / poontheenth of a beesdick ply so should not be a drama really. The radius on the LE actually helps a lot in this area and the hinge point causes the radius to pivot within the shorouds.

Couple more pics

cheers

Started masking the cowl chequers tonight - got 1/2 done. My advice - 78th FG no more for this little black duck! Headache, sore eyes, losing touch with reality.....

No way this baby's EVER going to nose over. I know, I'll balance it WAAAY back...

will try and get downstairs later today and finish off the wingtips then start on the flaps.

ok dunno about the rest of you guys who have built this kit but I hate the 1/16th ply flap horn. Looks far too weak to me and would be prone to wear in the clevis hole.

so have manufactured one out of alum angle. Pics attached of the RHS one. Will drill some holes in the base so the epoxy can seep through and get a good purchase on the horn.

off on hols for a week so no progress till I'm back

Hello Peter, I agree on the 1/16 flap horn, I built mine out of 1/8 and hardened after drilling with thin CA. Since there is a lot of shaping and sanding of the flap leading edge I wanted to slide the horn in after the shaping sanding. Too much hassle with the horn in the way. DWR.

Pete your details continue to amaze-the flap horn you fabricated makes lots of sense to me as I'm probably going with a ZDZ-80 in my GS47 as it is the thing is fitted with a "dead"ZDZ-60 which is basically the same dimension--Have You ever hear of Mac Hodges who flys that G.S. B-29 doing inverted passes and all, which is powered by 4 ZDZ-80s swinging 24" Dia FOUR blade props ..

Hi Richard,
mate if there is one thing I am paranoid about it is sloppy control linkages and that ply one is a disaster waiting to happen. I will be putting dubro bolt through 4-40 ball linkages on each end , same for ailerons and elevators so no slop at all.

zdz 80? that is a lot of grunt, I think I'm overpowering mine with a G62

nope have not heard of that chap but people flying big B29s like a 3d planes do not impress me much. There is more skill in flying in a scale like manner. Just my view.

We have a guy here who has a B17 and was flying it about in the manner you describe, the wings used to flap like a bird. He has since calmed down - might have found a few cracks developing me thinks.

cheers
Peter
