Thanks , so far I have taken off all of the covering , changed the P51 styel gear to p40 . Split the long airlerons so that I could add flaps . Scratch built the split flaps , rebuilt the tail to include sacle counter balances. I also redid the cockpit as this was my first attempt . I will post more pics soon .
As far as P40s its my favorite plane . Have the VQ p40 sitting half done , just got a new Pica 1/6 scale as a next winter build , wiating for the China Models 72" p40 release in the spring .
So I cant agree with you more , you can never get enought of the P40ties

LDM, How did you hinge and reinforce the flaps? I've got a Red Box Warhawk I am going to repair and modify as I go along the way and getting ready to start building a P40-N version soon.

I tested differant types of thin plywood laminated on balsa . I did this about two times before i was happy with the stiffness and little flex .
Then I used robart hindges burried in balsa blocks that were later sanded down .
The flaps function great .Considering I was working with a finished wing the bigggest challenge was keeping the top -non moving part of the wing/flap in place and sturdy while I was tinkering with the bottom part .
Did you notice the rail in the fuse , the canopy will slide .
Its a simple square stock of aluminum with a straight line cut in it. Then I added ball links to the inside canapy that will slide thru the rail manually .

Neat arf bash, you should fill in the open bays and glass it. I always love when people ask if my arf is scratch built or kitted. The look on their faces when you tell them it's an arf is priceless.
Have you decided what scheme it will be ?

Thanks S1 , I think i am planning on filling in those areas . As far as covering I am looking at two options .
1)Glass
2)a cloth type iron on and dope finish .
Dont know yet on the scheme , comsidering green /gray botton -(but scale colers) .with either Flying tigers or skull. Being a Flying Tiger fanatic I nevr thouoght i would do a skull but this will be one of three P40 in my hanger .
To briefly tell you how the bash started -the covering suck , it was green /gray with a sky blue bottom. If you tried to re-heat it became a prune . So firts I covered the gray cameio with tan and lt looked great but the overall covering was very wrinkled .
So as I strarted to pull the covering off I noticed that the plane was very well made , all seems glued , bulkhead reinforced ect ect . So I decided why not take it further . I have to post more pics because I am further along .
If I dont glass any suggestion on good cloth iron on covering that dose not show seems ?

Hey LDM, I think a cool finish would be OD green top side and grey bottom with the skull on the cowl bottom, like in the squadron signals action book. Make it different from the normal P-40.

Hey LDM, Talking about color schemes. Two of the best books that I have for references are "P-40 Curtiss From 1939 to 1945" published by Histoire and Collections and the good old "P-40 Warhawk Aces of the CBI" by Carl Molesworth. Alot of great paint schemes to use and some rare ones too. Keep the pictures coming!
