I had "Doc" Miller in a GP corsair 58" span aircraft. I'd since sold the aircraft but it can be done. I had to remove the legs from the pilot before he'd fit. Here's a shot.

I'm in the process of putting on in my GSP Spitfire. The detail is amazing. I'll post pictures once the cockpit is built and the pilot is installed (it'll probably be a while though).

I have done that to a couple of the Blue Box Pilots but I cut away about 70% of the plastic body. It takes almost nothing to keep the clothes in shape and since they are static you can cut away most of the joint and use the clothing for the pivot. Despite all that work you still only save about 3 ozs. The next one I do will have nothing but the hands and head along with the clothing tacked together and stuffed with fiberfill.

Hi

Yes I plan to do the same, I have this pilot shown below (similar to Blue Box - Ultimate pilot range) which weighs in quite heavy at 14 oz (Including parachute). How much do the Blue Box pilots weigh.

I am about to strip him down, hack him back to lose some weight. I intend to drill him out all over the place.

He will eventually go in my Yellow P47 cockpit I have built up round him, still needs finishing touches and fitting together.

Cheers

Lee

In answer to your question about Blue Box Pilot weight, my notes showed the Initial weight to be 8.25 oz.

Sculptured weight was 5.25. I would project that head and hands only with fiberfil clothes for the torso and limbs would come in just over 3 oz.

The Blue Box doll bodies are well made with thick plastic and strong joints. It makes them sturdy and long lasting, I guess, but for flying pilots we can do with a lot less structure.

I simply took off all his clothes and drilled him full of holes. I didn't weigh him but he's lighter now than he was before.

I have a buddy That has been flying a Yellow P-47 for a couple years with a untouched BBI pilot..The weight seems to be no problem for him . The plane still lands nice and slow...

I made a new body out of foam and pipe cleaners, used his head, gauntlets and boots, full uniform and stuff. Total weight is 4 ounces. The foam I used is the black type spongy stuff. He holds position ok with the pipe cleaners but I strapped him in and glued his hands to the stick and throttle to get him to look right.
