RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
okay guys here is my first post on this site. i have one question for alot of people in here. you guys all talk about fourstrokes like they are the real deal why doesn,t anybody use 2 stroke anymore. i have a75 super tigre in my p40 it works great i swing a 13/6apc
it hits 10000rpm and engine is not broken in yet .. if anybody else is running this same combo can you please let me know how yours works this is my first st75(from italy) and i'm not sure what rpm this engine is suppose to run at i don,t know if i'm working it to much.
i have flown this thing 3 times it flys great i have only been flying for a1&1/2 years and i love it have a topflite p40 that is also assembeled just needs to be painted
thanks for info in advance on this subject

Two strokes are fine, but nothing beats the throaty power of the YS 91 I have on mine. Low level passes are the best. The only problem I have with this plane is that it does not want to stop flying, she floats and floats, you almost have to muscle her to the ground.

I think lower pitch prop will help reducing landing speed. Also, higher nitro will enable lower idle too. Are you running a 15x8 on your YS 91? What idle rpm are you getting?

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
ANYONE of you pilots use a SuperTigre or OS 90/91 2 Stroke in this P-40 inverted or sidemounted? AND was it reliable or not... Contemplating a P-40 or Corsair by H9.... I have a ST 91 NIB and also a used OS .61 so I'd rather stick to these if they will work well and reliable inverted....or side mounted....anythoughts on these or experience?
Thanks
lastly...are the newer Stock H9 retracts better and holding up better than early release kits?

hey nemesis i have a st 75 inverted it works great just lean out the bottom end a bit because with the engine inverted the fuel puddles to the plug so if you do this it will have more of a chance to burn it off i have had mine in the air 10 times now and it is working great. this is what works for me (so far lol)

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
I used to have a ST90 in my TF corsair. WHAT A BLAST! I loved it. I used a slimline large volumn pitts muffler that gave it a deep thoaty growl and really turned that engine loose. I used it side mounted and it didnt stick out of the cowl. Was so reliable that the only hole in the cowl was for the glow driver. Didnt have one for the needle valve. Set it and forget it. I had to use a cowl baffle to properly cool the engine. I use that engine now in my scratch mustang, side mounted also. Its a screemin deamon. I have the H9 P-40 with a saito .91 in it. I didnt follow the instructions when I assembled. They wanted the servos in the tail. I made a new servo tray and moved all the servos up by the CG and ran 4-40 rod to the elev and rud. To support the pushrods in the middle I used spray foam insulation with a straw extension to carefully place the foam inside. Just takes a little. Balanced with no lead. My P-40 weighs 7lbs 10oz ready to fly. Lands like a trainer. Had to do a bunch to straighten out the retracts. Not the best of quality but the do ok at a light weight. I've never run 2-stroke inverted but I've seen it done successfully. Go for it. One thing I've noticed about flying is that there is a tail waggle like a corsair from mid throttle to full throttle. Anybody else notice this?
BTW-I've seen your field in Bryan. My son lives in College Station. Thats a nice big runway.

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
Does anyone know if the newer production models have improved retracts? There's plenty of mixed reviews on them, just curious, because I'm interested in this plane. I have an O.S. 91 FS looking for a new home. I figured one of those adjustable headers would allow me to hide the entire exhaust in that cowl (too pretty to cut).

Something I thought I would never say BUT, mine are holding up too. I DID do some rework to them to make them not so wobbley. I fly mine with a saito .91. Not a screamer but does just fine. I think what makes the retracts work ok is keeping it light. With the servos all moved forward around the CG it came out to 7lbs 13oz (I think, or thereabouts). I lands like a trainer. The main thing that helped was fixing the wheel alignment. Had to set them straight on or the flimsey struts would dance in and out then cause nose overs.

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
Glad to hear it. I too have personal experience with retracts. Though they were the cheap ones in the Spectrum(40 sized pattern plane), they held up most of the time, but if there was a slight croswind, they would quickly move out of allignment, and nose it over. I was hesitant because of this, and reading countless posts over the past couple years has certainly made me think more than twice about picking up a bird epqiped with them. I really love the P-40, it's a beautiful plane, and I can't wait to get my hands on one. Thanks again guys...

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
hey nemisis i am running a apc 13x6 apc like i said she is hitting 10000 but still isnt broken in taking it easy on her i am using omega 15 and the original glow that it came with. have a couple pics but none without the cowling. here is a little story the last time i flew it all was good had to take the cowling off because my remote glow driver came off the plug. put it all back together got it up in the air had about 3 mins on the tank when BOOOOM i just about s%#@ my pants her the spinner broke so thinking no big deal. i flip out the gear and get ready for final. put my girl into a shallow dive in a left turn. as i go to straightn her out she won't respond by this time i'm 50 feet up and coming in then my brain kicks in and starts to feed in rudder brought her down with a little ruff landing but nothing damaged THANK GOD so i look at whats left of the spinner and i guess i must have over tightend it (plastic du-bro) never buy that again so i want to fly it again but fiigured better find out why it wouln't turn. Here when the spinner came off it hit the right alerion and stripped the sevo. boy did i get lucky

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
I am trying to deceide which warbird to get. Either the P-40, the corsair, and P-51 mustang by Hangar 9. Any help?? I like to do aerobatics and want the one that is built the best. I know it is a warbird and cannot do a lot of aerobatics but which is the best one??

danedelman,
My H9 P40 with an OS91 Surpass does the nicest aerobatics and some of the wildest inside and outside snaps
and spins I have ever seen.
It flies very smooth when you want it too and will then cut loose and snap all over the place when you start stirring the
sticks hard. It's a great plane for all types of flying.
I fly this plane every weekend at least 3 times per outing and have had it since June 05.
The stock retracts work fine and are holding up great.

FlinVR..Nice video... If you can land on that runway you can land anywhere!!!!!!!! Kinda narrow runway...But Great for practice!!!
I like the performance I saw on your P-40 with that OS .91 4 Stroke..
I am itching to get my big box this weekend...I ended up with the H9 COrsair.... I may just have to get the P-40 as well I can tell the wife it was a 2 for one special.... 2 planes for all my $$$$$

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
danedelman,
it is between the P-40 and the P-51 because the corsair has some problems on the gear and on the wing strength.
The p-40 has fixed all these problems.
the p-51 has too long legs (and flimsy) which make it necessary the wise of the LG. The paint on the cowling cracks also (fixed on the P-40)
In flight both are rather similar....

Hi nemesis4u,
Glad you liked the video.
Our fields runway is 22'x 300' of asphalt.
I can land most anything in that space as long as I touchdown on the approach end
and not halfway down the runway.
Good luck with your H9 planes. So far I have had the F4U and the P40 from H9 and they both fly like
low wing sport planes.
BTW I built my P40 per their instructions with no deviations. I had to add NO ballast and was able to
obtain the proper CG by mounting the battery as required in the radio bay.

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
I have a 91 Surpass also to put in. Now I think I am between the P-40 and the P-47. I had a giant scale plane p-40 that flew like a brick. It would tip stall at half throttle, so I am concerned about the p-40. The giant scale was the same weight as the hangar 9 but with only 480 sq in of wing. Flew horrible with constant corrections. I really like the P-40 design though and someone at my field has the p-47 but hasn't flown it yet.
Thanks for the responses.

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
I aggree, the video is very impressive. I've never seen a warbird do THAT![X(] One of my flight buddies has an old 40 sized mustang.(running a 60 size 2-stroke) He tried to get "Aerobatic" with it a few times.... One snap roll, and he decided to never do that again.(looked so violent, it scared everybody watching, and the pilot[I think he had to change his shorts...hehe]). If the video is any indication of the flight envelope of the H-9 P-40, then I'm more than happy to pick one up. Considering how many people have had few if any problems with the retracts, I'm pretty much sold...

RE: Hangar 9 P-40 Warhawk
That P-40 is nice. I will have a good setup with the os 91 surpass. What prop do you use?? You sure can slow that down to a crawl to land and it takes off great. I am getting one of these. My other p-40 needed a lot more runway and had to come in at 1/4 with the nose down to land without falling out of the sky. Thanks for the great video.
