RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Looking good Yardy,
I had a 3w-80 inline in a Fiberclassics spitfire. Smaller then your stang but is about 40 pounds. Flew it great except it liked to overheat. Even with the recommended baffling up front and the air ducting from the underwing radiator to the front it would overheat and die. I swapped her out for a Quadra 100 and have not had any issues since.
A friend here in town is also running a Quadra 100 on his Don Smith Mustang. Prop is a 22x16 and it really moves. It's up around 50 pounds. Gear were from Don Smith (long time ago) and not sure if he did them or was selling someone's stuff. Nice and heavy duty like the one's you have. Good luck with her. They land very tame....at least my buddie's does. Very docile for a mustang.

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Hey thanks Gary hope to see you again this year.
Dave you are the man!
I was thinking the same thing about the 80 inline I do also have a brand new Q100 that I was going to put in my Meister jug but now I will use it in this stang. Would you happen to know what’s the weight of your friends D S Stang.
Thanks for all the help and info

The 'stang looks sweet Yardy! While the 3W80 definitely looks cool, the Q100 is probably the way to go.
Keep up the great work... Can't wait to see her at the field!

Hey Yardy,
I'll check on the weight of the Mustang. I know it'll come in at close to 50 pounds, if not just over. The quadra 100 really fly's it well. You would be ok with your 80 but you'll like the plane better with the 100 I think. I'll shoot you a pm with the weight when I get it.

Thanks Yardy! I just started this bird today...working on the stab and elev's. This is a bit different for me...no instructions AT ALL. I built some Ziroli's and at least get a cheat sheet of some kind. Will start the wings next and then go to the Fuse.
Blessings,

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Hi to all you Don Smith Mustang builders/fliers..
I have just purchased plans, components form Don Smith for the big mustang and a wood kit.
Have a lot of questions before I start building:
1. Where do I purchase scale wheels (approx. 7" dia.) ?
2. Is there any pit falls or things to watch out for when building the Stag?
3. From fliers, is there any suggested mod's to the plans that should be considered that would
improve the reliability of the model?
4. I have a ZDZ 80 that I purchased in the past. Would this engine fly this bird for general sport flying- no high speed stuff?
Thanks!

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Hope you have good building skills! The plans were fine. Who cut your kit for you??? I had mucho trouble with flaps being out of line and parts being wrong sizes for spars and such. Not real impressed with kit cutter. The retracts are a ton of money!!! Also, the 80 will probably NOT be enough unless you go with the new Super 80 (9.6 hp). Then you will have a weight issue at the nose. I would go as big and heavy as possible for the engine...Check out Yardy w/ the inline.
Good luck...I have kinda abandoned this one for a while...just doing some flying.

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Thanks Rex for your comments:
I'll check out the flaps and spar/parts as you suggested.
I bought my parts kit from Precision Cut, is that who you bought yours from ?Haven't received mineyet.
I thought the retracts would be a money pit- aren't they always- and the newest ones are always
better? -and heavier! Have you bought 7" wheels from someone?
model building isn't an exact science is it ! We try to build them light and the suppliers are going the other way (solid rubber tires with steel hubs - muffler assem. that would work on a Briggs and Stratton- etc..).
Your comment on the eary Z-80 that I have, is my fear. I have been reading the threads on the new Black/Blue Head Z-80-- very impressive-- It would be a better choice.. It's hard to determine
what you really need for scale sport flying until you have been there ,which I haven't yet.
My building skills are slow-slow-slower.
Thanks again

I got mine from Precision also. Watch out for last rib for the flaps going into the wing center joining area...about 1/2" off at least on mine. Figured it is because the piece was moved as it went through cutting. Spars varied in size...about 1/16" difference in some. Had to make my own web re-inforcements at center section...they must have forgotten those!!! That was a blast!!! I just had to walk away for a while on mine.
Slow is good. Make sure you have several views of the plans for the part you are working on...it helps. No instructions at all so it is up to you to decide what to do.
ON the engine...I have just seen so many guys try to keep the plane at "scale flight" rather than powering up and just flying the plane at half throttle for the scale look. This is a heavy bird and you don;t want to cheer every time it makes it in the air, as if you were lucky this time. Again, for a 40 lb. plane...go big as you can and heavy...you'll need the nose weight.

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Hi Rex,
From your comments it looks very interesting as to what may be forth coming when I finally get my plans and glass from don smith and kit from precision. Precision did say it may take several weeks before they could get a kit together-(back up on the Laser cutter). Iv'e put a lot of thought on the engine today
(considering your comments and my own thoughts), I'm not going to use my on hand Z-80 as planned- to bad it was a good fit in the 1/4 scale cowling. will look at other engines!
I'll keep you posted .
How far along are you on your Mustang? Have you chosen an engine yet?
Thanks, RGR
How do you like my double posting...Life is sure a learning process!
