Hey Guys, I'm sorry, I looked thru the thread but couldnt find the answer, so I ask...... Is is okay to add lightening holes to the stab base supports and the aft fuse plate (underneath)? You can see I already added them on the left and right upper gear supports....

Winston,

The plane looks great and the details on the stand are great and appreciated! And who would have thought that $20.00 would do all that.

That pic of Winstons is a great example, you can put lightingholes ware ever just remember to maintain the streingth of the member, don't get closer than 2 time the material thickness " edge of hole to edge of material" on balsa I use 21/2 as a rule.

Hope this helps

Quick question for those who have flown theirs -- and I think that you, Bob, already mentioned it somewhere, but what length of aileron horn (robart type) should I use? I'm leaning toward the 1 inch horn, but I have several sizes to choose from.
Thx

TO ALL
FOR WHAT ITS WORTH, FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALS LOOKING FOR COPPER SHEETING AND DON'T WANT TO BUY 20 FEET (THE WAY IT COMES @Home Depot or Loew's)[&o], I was browsing at Ace True Value and came across a 5" x 7" pice that they sell individually for $ 2.50 each. I 'm using it for the main beam in my GEAR DOORS WHERE MY BALL LINKS ARE CONNECTED,AS THE PC COPPER PLATED PIECE I GOT FROM RADIO SHACK SEEMS TO BE CRACKING (MUST BE FROM HEAT STRESS/SOLDERING GUN).
WILL PUT UP SOME PICS AFTER I GET THEM MADE UP.

I used the ones that came with the kit and I am using the hole at 11/8 with a ball link, they are about 13/8 total hight. I think the robart units will work ok, just use the last hole.
You can get the same kit stile from tower if you don't mind waiting a few days.

Hay Grorge
When soldering C/B mtl pre tin your spot and part, use low heat just enough to mske the solder flow, and use the smalest solder wire you can get ( flux core) and when you put them together use a hot iron at about 600 deg's for no more then 5 secounds. Oh and do use extra flux, when done clean the flux with denatured alke. This was the technique we tought back in the early days of hand soldering c/boards, you know when I was young

Hope this helps

I do have the ones that came with the kit, but I like the Robart's "look" better. Which hole, from the tip, are you using, and does it give a good roll rate (maybe not as quick as an aerobat!)?

Winston,

Your plane looks great. I can't believe how smooth you have gotten it. I am still plugging away on my son's 1/8 scale Corsair. I was wondering if you have heard of a company called Micro Fastners? Their web site is microfastners.com and they have rivets and screws from #0 on up of multiple lengths. So if your looking for an alternative to using the soldering iron method this will do a much neater and realistic appearence. They are sending me samples of their small rivets and screws so I can be sure to order the right things. I know Tim was buying small screws from a rail road type hobby shops but they were very expensive. These are less than $30.00 for 1000. They also sell them by the 100. I am going to use them for sure.

Thanks Barry but it has little bumps and dips al over it just hard to see it with the cam i have .I just got out the major ones and left the little ones .The real ones were not smooth at all so i am happy and thats all that maters in the end
i havent heard of micro fasteners i will check them out for some screws . i think i will stick to the soldering iron method ( less weight ) and it will look good enough on this plane
been looking at your thread and yours is cumming along niecly and is looking very good as well

Sam Seconed hole from the tip or 11/8 from the control surface. About roll rate it is a warbird and it roll's like a real one, it is definatly not on a string, the only expo I am using is the elevator about 15% outher than that all surfaces are set up per the book full flaps about 40 deg's. It will loop from level flight, but I due pull off the power on all down slopes, except for hi speed fly by's.

Winston

If you are looking to stock up on hdwr "Mcmaster Carr" the only thing you get a box of 100 pc's for about the same price, there catalog is a bit difficult to get used to but onec you have it , it works. Next bets think is our ACE hdwr store for bits and pices.

Hope this helps guys

Hi Winston

I think I goofed you as I for got to tell you your bird looks great, but it seams when you post pic's I end up with questions, did you use a router to cut the firewall radiuses? they are realy neet, and you are so right about the lumpy and wavie surfaces as these machines were not designed for beauty, just plain killing machines and there avarge life span was about 50 hours.

Any way keep up the good work

Didnt think anything of it Bob thanks though .This is what i used to put the radiuse on the fuse ita o right angle die grinder . http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=93157 I drew a line one inch back from the fire waff and one 1 inch in on the fire wall itself then just sanded the radius with the die grinder and finnished it off by hand wich didnt take long

Been building my Corsair for a month or two now, its going together really quickly (apart from a few weeks pause for birth of my son - its hard to build after only 2 hours sleep!).

Just had a quick question about the wing tips, not sure if I missunderstood something or if there is a bit of an error in the kit but the plan shows only one wing tip and to build a left and right we just build one right way up and one upside down. - so far so good.

....but all of the tabs for the wing tips are on the top of the ribs suggesting that both tips are build up side down.

Did I miss something?

I managed to build a left and a right by building both upside down, but only using the plan for one of them.

Hi guys

If you are building out of the box pg 22 left side is shown just copy for the right, (carefull not to get a warp) but if you are doing the tip mod for scale , the quickest way is to go to the endix in post 1 there are dig's and pic's. If you need thread titles on scale modes pm me.

Dabevan That is a great looking helper you have and of corse congrats on your new son

Used to go to the WRAM show all the time, Havent been in about four years. Maybe this year......

Has anyone toy'd with the idea of mounting servos in the tail for the elevators? Maybe would weight be a huge concern huh? I think I just answered my own question.........

Fili

depending on the engine you use you could have to add from about 10oz.ro 4lbs of lead to the nose, that is why I keep saying build the tail light lot's of lighting holes.

If you would like to see how suvier the weight penelty would set up a simple test. use a board (1 X 2 X lenght needed) put a fulcrum back from one ene the same didtance back as shown on plans (front of prop to C/G point)now ballance the board to a level position then add your servos at the distance back same as you would mount them rebalence the board and keep trach of how much nose weight you will add, you will be suprised.

On alighter note any one looking for a reasonable priced pilot figure looks like he would fit any of the 1/5 birds, Any way I stumbled on this web site www.HistoricAviation.com and look at item #81056c not quite as good a a Blue box pilot

Hope this helps

Okay, time for an update pic (or two). Getting the alieron and flap linkages. I'm going to put a small overhang of 1/64 ply along the trailing edge of the wing to help hide the hinge line and seal the gap. Almost used up all the wood in the kit, and am almost done with the instruction book. Kelvin at Keleo should be starting work on my exhaust soon. I'll finalize the fuse taper behind the cowl once I get the engine mounted, exhaust routed, and the cowl on. Thanks to all of you who contribute to this thread, it's great to have this resource.
